Jesus’ earthly ministry is coming to a close.
He is now preparing for the cross.
Look in verse 1
Its just before the Passover Feast. Judas has the heart of betrayal. Jesus knows that he will successfully complete his task of redemption.
Verse 1:
John 13:1 NASB95
Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
Before the Feast of the Passover.
This forms the context
Thats why there are so many people here.
Its the time of the passover where there are over 2 million Jews in and around Jerusalem.
Thats why John mentions this.
Jesus knew that His hour had come-
The Passover was a long event,
He knew this because He is God.
Predetermined
He
This is the hour he has been speaking about.
The hour of glory.
The hour of pain.
The hour of his return back to the Father who had sent Him.

having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

Two important truths are revealed in this brief statement:
The object of His love.
His own. His sheep.
John 10:14 NASB95
“I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,
John 10:27–28 NASB95
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
Like a husband coming after his bride, he pursues her to the end.
With every step Jesus demonstrates his love.
We are the object of his love.
The quality of his love
He had demonstrated His love to them in many ways already.
With every step Jesus demonstrates his love.
His calling them.
His teaching them.
Every miracle.
Now, in His humble service.
Soon, with His death
Forever, as our intercessor
With every step Jesus demonstrates his love.
With every step Jesus demonstrates his love.
Today we see lapses in love all the time.
Today we see lapses in love all the time.
A broken home
An unfaithful spouse.
Jesus love is perfect.
Jesus love is perfect.
Jesus’s love is never ending.
Jesus’s love is never ending.
It isn’t careless or even reckless.
It isn’t careless or even reckless.
Its enduring and it is careful.
Vs 1 there is love
Vs 2 there is hate
John 13:2 NASB95
During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,
John is setting the context.
giving us this bit of information, let you know that whatever happens next, there will be a betrayal.
Jesus predicted this:
John 6:70–71 NASB95
Jesus answered them, “Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?” Now He meant Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray Him.
While Jesus was loving them to the end, hatred had found its way into the heart of one of Jesus’s closest friends.
But even in the midst of this, Jesus is confident.
John 13:3 NASB95
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God,
Vs 3 there is confidence
Jesus is confident of a few things:
His soon coming future.
Pain, death, shame.
His guaranteed victory.
All thats left is to complete the task.
He also knows that he will soon return to the Father.
So, in middle of His love. Hatred is brewing, but Jesus is confident. What does He do?
Jesus takes the place of the servant.
John 13:4–5 NASB95
got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
Typical understanding of foot washing
Before the meal. Explain.
Performed by a Non-Jew slave.
Normally there is a slave there doing that. In this case there wasn’t, so Jesus got up.
Servant clothes.
Servant clothes.

The Exchange with Peter (6-11) Peter always had to speak. This is the second time Peter has publicly rebuked Jesus. Jesus came to serve, not to be served. Christ assures Peter that it is fine for Peter to let Jesus serve him in this way? Why? Because it prefigured his greatest service on the cross. Because He is giving them an example to follow. The Teaching lesson (12-15) I am the Lord. I am your Master. I am God.I served you in the greatest way. Jesus has not physically washed our feet But if you are a believer, Jesus served you to the end by dying for you. He has given you a spiritual cleansing like Peter asked for. Your ONLY right response is to serve Him.
But he assumes the Lowliest of all jobs.
Think about the people involved here

The Beginning and the End

Sinful (Some of whom deny. Most would abandon Him after His Crucifixion)
Selfish (Woman at the well)
Too Prideful to wash feet

Yet, He washes their feet
How would you respond?
The Exchange with Peter (6-11)
John 13:5
John 13:5–7 NASB95
Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.”
Peter always had to speak.
This is the second time Peter has publicly rebuked Jesus.
Turn with me to Matthew 16
Matthew 16:13–18 NASB95
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
But then just a few verses down.
Matthew 16:21–23 NASB95
From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
before, Jesus you are too great for this.
here in john 13, Jesus you are too great for this.
But Jesus has come for this purpose!!
Philippians 2:5–9 NASB95
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,
Peter sees Christ as Master and Lord
He sees him for all of the above mentioned terms.
Because of this, Peter does not see the need for Jesus to serve but to be served.
Mark 10:45 NASB95
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Jesus came to serve, not to be served. But even after Jesus reassures assures Peter, he refuses.
Look at verse 8-11
John 13:8–11 NASB95
Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you. For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
Peter cannot bear the thought of having His Lord serve Him in this way.
Christ assures Peter that it is fine for Peter to let Jesus serve him in this way? Why? Because it prefigured his greatest service on the cross.
If Peter wont allow for Jesus to wash his feet, he has no part with him.
Peter misunderstands. desires to be washed all over (we laugh at peter here but we see a man who is love with Jesus)
He misunderstand, but he does so because he is passionately in love with Jesus.
Jesus corrects him
John 13:10 NASB95
Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.
Jesus is speaking of service.
Peter needs Jesus to serve him. Jesus lovingly tells
Jesus also reminds them that his statement about peter does not apply to all of them.
Jesus can rightly say of peter- you are clean
But make no mistake- Judas is not.
Now The lesson (12-15)
John 13:12–15 NASB95
So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? “You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. “For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.
I am the Lord.
I am your Master.
I am God.
I served you in the greatest way.
Jesus has not physically washed our feet
But if you are a believer, Jesus served you to the end by dying for you.
He has given you a spiritual cleansing like Peter asked for.
Your ONLY right response is to serve Him by serving others.
But how often are we quick to quit.
Jesus love and service was to the end.
He didn’t let up.
He didn’t take a break.
He humbled himself.
We will never serve others well until we humble ourselves.
Most of the time, when you get to the bottom of a lack of service to God and other, normally its source is that you think to highly of yourself.
Sometimes we couch it in this: Well I’m just not good at that.
Translation: I might make myself look bad if I do that.
Let me remind you what the Lord of all the earth did. He girded himself and washed feet.
he lovingly served to the end.

APPLICATION
Whose feet are you washing?
What are you doing in the church?
When is the last time you did something here simply to serve and not to receive credit?
What do you say when the nominating committee comes around?
Furthermore, who are you serving that is not a believer?
When is the last time you visited someone simply to serve them and share the Gospel?
Jesus washed his disciples feet including the feet of Judas. We have no excuse.
