Isaiah 53

The young G.I. tasted World War II combat for the first time in a bloody battle in the Italian mountains. He dived into a foxhole just ahead of some bullets and began deepening the shallow pit. As he frantically scraped with his hands, he unearthed something metal. It was a silver crucifix, lost by a former foxhole occupant.

Another man hurtled in beside the frightened soldier as a new round of artillery screamed overhead. After the explosions, the soldier noticed his companion was a chaplain. Holding out the crucifix, the soldier gasped, “Am I glad to see you! How do you work this thing?”

It seems we always want to be able to manipulate the power of God to our advantage. We try to use prayer to talk God into seeing things our way. We offer God bargains—church attendance and tithing in exchange for business success or children who don’t go nuts when they’re teenagers.

But God has plans of His own, and He expects us to fall in line behind Him to have the adventure of a lifetime. There is nothing too hard for God. He makes big plans and He wants people of big faith to carry them out.
