In Step #1 and #2 we learned:
In Step #1 and #2 we learned:
Our need for God
In Step #3 we learned:
We decided to turn our wills and lives over to God (anew)
In Step #4 & #5
We do an inventory and become totally honest about our brokenness and character flaws
In Step #6
Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
It is one thing to know our character flaws and weaknesses
It is another thing to truly be willing to let them go
M
Jesus is asking us to do an exchange:
our way of living…to…his way of living
These character flaws have been ingrained in us over decades of repetition
Being an angry person
Being a jealous person
Being a controlling person
Being a dishonest person
Being a shy person
They do not disappear overnight.
Paul talked about the journey towards being like Christ:
Phil:
All of our character traits come from one of two places:
1)Born with the genealogical characteristic:
2 sisters I know of demonstrates similar behaviors that their Father did
Angry- combative-judgmental-addictive behavior
The 3rd sister and the brother have a totally different disposition and world view of life
2)Came from negative childhood experiences:
there are two distinct types:
the absence of certain necessities or the presence of hurtful events.
-If a child is neglected; if they're not praised enough,
the child will grow up with a lack of confidence and self-worth.
What does that look like in an adult?
(ask congregation)
Never reach your potential
-If a child grows up with a lack of protection from hurtful experiences like:
being emotionally hurt or abused through harsh criticism, shaming, blaming or the instilling of guilt;
creates feelings of worthlessness
they can be physically assaulted beatings with fists, belts or other objects,
You will create a very angry adult
This creates our adult personalities
or they can be sexually abused.
child can be picked on, bullied, made fun of or taken advantage of.
They can be ignored by those around them
This creates our adult personalities
I know someone (ginney) who is extremely controlling and obsessed
Example
socks in drawer
crying because the floor is not clean
unable to let their children go (always interfering)
Why is she like this?
Grew up being beat by her brother
Father beating up the mother
She has to control the situation
You are who you are and how you are because of many things not your fault
We must understand that when God identifies wrong behaviors in us it is not to condemn us
He knows what we’ve been through in life
God wants you to let go of these responses and behaviors
Be willing to be made willing
Yet God is very patient with us.
Story of child putting feces on the wall - Greg Boyd Story
Girl adopted by Christian foster parents
Girl put feces on wall every night
Instead of reprimanding her or sending her back, they simply washed it off and eventually asked why she was doing it .....
no condemnation…willingness to put up with it until she was ready to tell them why
She was abused by her father
She defecated during one of these epsiodes
It repulsed the father and he left the room
So she continued to put it on the wall because it kept her father away
Foster parents allowed her to continue doing it and said it was okay until the child felt safe enough to not need to do it anymore.
What behaviors are we doing in life to protect us from, fears, people or situations that make us feel:
Scared
Inferior
Abused?
Jesus knows what we feel...
You may have done the inventory and found some areas that need changing
It may be hard or scary to change a behavior...
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
