Introduction

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - An American missionary from Chicago who was stabbed to death last week in Haiti was a generous man who dedicated his life to the impoverished country after a devastating 2010 earthquake,
“He would take a cooler over to Lincoln Park, and just pass out water to people who looked thirsty,” whether runners or bikers or anyone else who might need it, McCarthy said.
Knoop started out with just a smaller, rolling cooler, eventually wheeling a larger one around in a wagon and handing out water with a couple other members of the church. Knoop didn’t hand out literature or make a big deal about the church’s involvement, but would tell anyone who asked that the water was courtesy of the church, and was happy to engage anyone curious about Moody in a more involved discussion.
When the 2010 earthquake happened, Knoop was drawn to helping alleviate the sufferings of those affected by the disaster, but at first, missionary and aid groups were skeptical of having him go to Haiti to stay, McCarthy said. Knoop went down to Haiti to work for a month, and eventually was able to find a group that he could volunteer with on a long-term basis.
When Knoop, who has two sisters but no children, found a place for himself in Haiti, he gave up his apartment in Chicago, McCarthy said.
“He gave away everything, his TV, his car, his clothes,” McCarthy said.
Knoop settled into running the converted storage container in Haiti through which much of the mail and supplies sent to almost 400 service and missionary groups via MFI is distributed. But he was a volunteer and worked usually two days a week, so he had time to work building homes for those displaced by the earthquake and became active in a local church.
“He was just willing to do whatever was needed.
“He really did have a love for the people and a love to serve,” Karabensh said.
