The Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper
Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for all of us share that one bread.
This is not the primary text that we use as a guide for participating in the Lord’s supper, yet it does show us how God has woven unity into the symbolism of the bread that is a part of the Lord’s Supper.
There are 2 metaphors to consider.
First. Jesus said about the bread, this is my body, broken for you.
The first metaphor is to think of the bread as the broken body of Jesus, who willingly gave himself up on the cross, to die so that through his victorious sacrifice, we might live.
Today, we take part in the Lord’s supper to remember Jesus death, and to celebrate his resurrection and to look forward to when he comes again.
The second metaphor is that the Church is the body of Christ.
Jesus is the head of this body, but the called people of God, his church, are his body.
I see a unity in this. For the bread that we will serve today was all taken from one loaf. It is made up of the same ingredients, it is the same substance.
All who are in Christ are first and foremost identified as being in Christ, children of God, a part of his church, living for his glory, participating in his mission. Together, we are here to introduce people to Jesus Christ and together be fully devoted disciples of Jesus.
Our identity is the same, we are Christians. We are one in Christ.
As we take communion today, consider the unity of this church. Are there ways that this bond of love can be strengthened. Is there a person that you can encourage.
Or is there a relationship that you need to mend?
Now is a time for solemn reflection. Is there any thing in your life that is causing harm to this church? Do you have sin that you are unwilling to confess? Are you in right relationship with God and with people?
Participating in the Lord’s supper means that you are a part of the body of Christ. You have confessed that Jesus is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords and you believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead.
If you cannot say that this is true for your life, then please do not participate, simply let the plate pass you by when it is served.
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when He was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way, after supper He also took the cup and said, “This cup is the new covenant established by My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
