and everything whatever you do in word or in deed, giving thanks for all things in the name of the Lord Jesus to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17
Human life by its very nature is spiritual formation. The question is not wheather to undertake spiritual formation. The question is what kind of spiritual formation are you engaged in. are we being increasingly conformed to the wholeness and intergration of the image of Christ?
The first dynamics of Christian spiritual formation is coming to grips with the negative and destructive spiritual formmation that has been subtly ingrained into our being by the culture.
The definition of spiritual formation is the process of being confirmed to the image of Christ Jesus for the sake of others (but for his glory)!!!!!!
We have the process and next we have the “BEING CONFORMED.”
the being conformd to his image is the aspect of spiritual formation that also moves against the grain of our acculturation (the tranfer of culture from one ethnic group to another) . We are largely goverened by a materialistic/humanistic worldview that perceives everything ‘out there” as something to be grasped, controlled, and manipulated for our own purpose or, even worse, for the purpose of god! This prospective is so deeply ingrained, as wee shall see, that we determine our own self image, our meaning, our value, our purpose, by the effectiveness of our grasp, control, and manipulation of the world, of other persons, even of God. We seek to exercise our control by gaining information in order to manipulate what is “out there” for our own purposes.
The very thought of ‘being conformed’ which clearly implies that we are to be grasped, we are to be controlled, and we are to be grasped by someone other than ourselves. this confronts our deeply ingrained sense of being. “Graspers” powerfully resis being grasp by God/ “Controllers are inherently incapable of yielding control to God. ‘Manipulators strongly reject being shaped by God. “Information gathers” are structurally closed to being addressed by God. ‘Information takers” have extreme difficulty being receivers. Frenetically functional activist find it extremely difficult to be still and know God is God.

Psalm 46:10 LEB
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.”
Psalm 46

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life on account of me and of the gospel will save it.

The expectation of instant gratification in our culture is a by - product of our graaaspin, controlling, manipulative way of living. It is a feedback we require to affirm for ourselves that we are effective persons. It confirms our functional self - identity. f what we do doesn’t provide such gratification, it might mean that we are not capable, effective controllers of what is ‘out there” Thee idea of being conformed attack these ingrained expectations. We have extreme difficulty in abiding, in waiting patiently, trustingly, perseveringly, to be shaped by god according to God’s agenda.
John 7:37–39 LEB
Now on the last day of the feast—the great day—Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and let him drink, the one who believes in me. Just as the scripture said, ‘Out of his belly will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now he said this concerning the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were about to receive. For the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.)
John 7:
Genuine spiritual formation, being conformed, is the great reversal of the negative spiritual formation of our culture. It reverses our role from being the subject who controls the objects of the world, to being the object who controls the objects of the world, to being the object of the loving purposes of God who seeks to “control” us for our perfect wholeness. Genuine spiritual formation reverses our role as the controller (who acts to bring about the desired results in our lives) to beings who allow the spirit of God to act in our lives to bring about Go’s purposes . Genuine spiritual formation reverses our habitual expectations for gratifications to a posture of patient, open-ended yieldedness. Genuine spiritual formation brings about a fundamental shift from being our own production to being god’s creation.
Now we have seen that spiritual formation is the process of being conformed to the image of Jesus for the sake of others, (but for His glory)
We have the process; Of Being Conformed and now le’t look at ‘the image of Christ.
