I. INTRO
A. Where We’ve Been
B. Where We’re Going
C. Main Text
Ephesians 5:28–33 ESV
28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Ephesians 5:27–33 ESV
27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
D. Prayer
E. Context
II. BODY
A. Mutual Submission through love & Respect
Ephesians 5:28 ESV
28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
Eph 5:28
a. Husbands love their wife
1. The husband & wife are one
i. further expressed in...
Ephesians 5:31 ESV
31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
-God’s intention 4 marriage is for 2 people to b so unified that u can't tell where 1 starts & the other ends.
-The kind of oneness described here is why divorce is so devastating to God!
*divorce is the spiritual equivalent of ripping a person in two… instead
2. He who loves himself cares for his wife
Ephesians 5:29–30 ESV
29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body.
i. Paul suggests that it is as absurd for a husband to not care for his wife as a person starving himself!
-nourish: care, provision
-cherish: “to soften by heat”; “to keep warm; nurture,
to soften by heat”; then, “to keep warm
Vine, W. E., Unger, M. F., & White, W., Jr. (1996). Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words (Vol. 2, p. 98). Nashville, TN: T. Nelson.
*a husband’s love is expressed through care and nurturing
*often, men, we want to divorce the concepts of care & nurture from masculine behavior in favor of emotionless, tough, detachment, but this is false!
~its not a matter of tough verses tender care
^where a tender man= effeminate (girly/wimpy man); the more tender the more effeminate
^& tough man=masculine (man’s man); the more tough the more masculine
~its about being fiercely tough in defence of your family and tender with your family!
~This is what Christ centered masculinity looks like
-
-Again, this kind o care illustrates & points others to Jesus’ relationship to the church
b. It’s all about the Gospel
1. Jesus cares for & nurtures His Church!
i. Remember...
Eph 5:
Ephesians 5:31 ESV
31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
Ephesians 1:3 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
ii. Peter said it this way:
2 Peter 1:3 ESV
3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
b. It’s all about the Gospel
b. It’s all about the Gospel
Eph 5:
Ephesians 5:32 ESV
32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
2. Look @ how Paul describes the Gospel in:
Ephesians 5:25–27 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
i. Jesus died for (gave himself up) so that we might be united as HIS People forever starting now
Eph 5:25-
ii. His death and resurrection sanctifies (to make sacred) & washes us resulting in our being set apart & eventual perfection
iii. All of this culminates the day when He comes back and gets his church where he’ll present us 2 himself!
3. So, who’s Gospel does our marriage communicate: Jesus’ / the world’s?
c. Wives respect their husband
Ephesians 5:33 ESV
33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
1. Respect: esteem, honor, give regard, prefer, defer to, admire
2. Respect is the motivation for submission
i. Wives submit, not because it is the husband’s right and wife’s obligation, but because she respects him & his leadership so much that she trusts his judgement
-even when it doesn’t fully make sense to her
