1 Arise, Jerusalem, and shine like the sun; The glory of the Lord is shining on you!
2 Other nations will be covered by darkness, But on you the light of the Lord will shine; The brightness of his presence will be with you.
3 Nations will be drawn to your light, And kings to the dawning of your new day.
4 Look around you and see what is happening: Your people are gathering to come home! Your sons will come from far away; Your daughters will be carried like children.
5 You will see this and be filled with joy; You will tremble with excitement. The wealth of the nations will be brought to you; From across the sea their riches will come.
6 Great caravans of camels will come, from Midian and Ephah. They will come from Sheba, bringing gold and incense. People will tell the good news of what the Lord has done!
1 Teach the king to judge with your righteousness, O God; share with him your own justice,
2 so that he will rule over your people with justice and govern the oppressed with righteousness.
3 May the land enjoy prosperity; may it experience righteousness.
4 May the king judge the poor fairly; may he help the needy and defeat their oppressors.
5 May your people worship you as long as the sun shines, as long as the moon gives light, for ages to come.
6 May the king be like rain on the fields, like showers falling on the land.
7 May righteousness flourish in his lifetime, and may prosperity last as long as the moon gives light.
10 The kings of Spain and of the islands will offer him gifts; the kings of Sheba and Seba will bring him offerings.
11 All kings will bow down before him; all nations will serve him.
12 He rescues the poor who call to him, and those who are needy and neglected.
13 He has pity on the weak and poor; he saves the lives of those in need.
14 He rescues them from oppression and violence; their lives are precious to him.
1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles, pray to God.
2 Surely you have heard that God in his grace has given me this work to do for your good.
3 God revealed his secret plan and made it known to me. (I have written briefly about this,
4 and if you will read what I have written, you can learn about my understanding of the secret of Christ.)
5 In past times human beings were not told this secret, but God has revealed it now by the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets.
6 The secret is that by means of the gospel the Gentiles have a part with the Jews in God’s blessings; they are members of the same body and share in the promise that God made through Christ Jesus.
7 I was made a servant of the gospel by God’s special gift, which he gave me through the working of his power.
8 I am less than the least of all God’s people; yet God gave me this privilege of taking to the Gentiles the Good News about the infinite riches of Christ,
9 and of making all people see how God’s secret plan is to be put into effect. God, who is the Creator of all things, kept his secret hidden through all the past ages,
10 in order that at the present time, by means of the church, the angelic rulers and powers in the heavenly world might learn of his wisdom in all its different forms.
11 God did this according to his eternal purpose, which he achieved through Christ Jesus our Lord.
12 In union with Christ and through our faith in him we have the boldness to go into God’s presence with all confidence.
1 Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, during the time when Herod was king. Soon afterwards, some men who studied the stars came from the east to Jerusalem
2 and asked, “Where is the baby born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star when it came up in the east, and we have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard about this, he was very upset, and so was everyone else in Jerusalem.
4 He called together all the chief priests and the teachers of the Law and asked them, “Where will the Messiah be born?”
5 “In the town of Bethlehem in Judea,” they answered. “For this is what the prophet wrote:
6 ‘Bethlehem in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least of the leading cities of Judah; for from you will come a leader who will guide my people Israel.’ ”
7 So Herod called the visitors from the east to a secret meeting and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem with these instructions: “Go and make a careful search for the child, and when you find him, let me know, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 And so they left, and on their way they saw the same star they had seen in the east. When they saw it, how happy they were, what joy was theirs! It went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
11 They went into the house, and when they saw the child with his mother Mary, they knelt down and worshipped him. They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and presented them to him.
12 Then they returned to their country by another road, since God had warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod.

1 Israel, the Lord who created you says, “Do not be afraid—I will save you. I have called you by name—you are mine.
2 When you pass through deep waters, I will be with you; your troubles will not overwhelm you. When you pass through fire, you will not be burnt; the hard trials that come will not hurt you.
3 For I am the Lord your God, the holy God of Israel, who saves you. I will give up Egypt to set you free; I will give up Ethiopia and Seba.
4 I will give up whole nations to save your life, because you are precious to me and because I love you and give you honour.
5 Do not be afraid—I am with you! “From the distant east and the farthest west, I will bring your people home.
6 I will tell the north to let them go and the south not to hold them back. Let my people return from distant lands, from every part of the world.
7 They are my own people, and I created them to bring me glory.”
1 Praise the Lord, you heavenly beings; praise his glory and power.
2 Praise the Lord’s glorious name; bow down before the Holy One when he appears.
3 The voice of the Lord is heard on the seas; the glorious God thunders, and his voice echoes over the ocean.
4 The voice of the Lord is heard in all its might and majesty.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, even the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes the mountains of Lebanon jump like calves and makes Mount Hermon leap like a young bull.
7 The voice of the Lord makes the lightning flash.
8 His voice makes the desert shake; he shakes the desert of Kadesh.
9 The Lord’s voice shakes the oaks and strips the leaves from the trees while everyone in his Temple shouts, “Glory to God!”
10 The Lord rules over the deep waters; he rules as king for ever.
11 The Lord gives strength to his people and blesses them with peace.
14 The apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had received the word of God, so they sent Peter and John to them.
15 When they arrived, they prayed for the believers that they might receive the Holy Spirit.
16 For the Holy Spirit had not yet come down on any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
15 People’s hopes began to rise, and they began to wonder whether John perhaps might be the Messiah.
16 So John said to all of them, “I baptize you with water, but someone is coming who is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
17 He has his winnowing shovel with him, to thresh out all the grain and gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out.”
21 After all the people had been baptized, Jesus also was baptized. While he was praying, heaven was opened,
22 and the Holy Spirit came down upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with you.”

1 I will speak out to encourage Jerusalem; I will not be silent until she is saved, And her victory shines like a torch in the night.
2 Jerusalem, the nations will see you victorious! All their kings will see your glory. You will be called by a new name, A name given by the Lord himself.
3 You will be like a beautiful crown for the Lord.
4 No longer will you be called “Forsaken”, Or your land be called “The Deserted Wife”. Your new name will be “God is Pleased with Her”. Your land will be called “Happily Married”, Because the Lord is pleased with you And will be like a husband to your land.
5 Like a young man taking a virgin as his bride, He who formed you will marry you. As a groom is delighted with his bride, So your God will delight in you.
5 Lord, your constant love reaches the heavens; your faithfulness extends to the skies.
6 Your righteousness is towering like the mountains; your justice is like the depths of the sea. People and animals are in your care.
7 How precious, O God, is your constant love! We find protection under the shadow of your wings.
8 We feast on the abundant food you provide; you let us drink from the river of your goodness.
9 You are the source of all life, and because of your light we see the light.
10 Continue to love those who know you and to do good to those who are righteous.
1 Now, concerning what you wrote about the gifts from the Holy Spirit. I want you to know the truth about them, my brothers and sisters.
2 You know that while you were still heathen, you were led astray in many ways to the worship of lifeless idols.
3 I want you to know that no one who is led by God’s Spirit can say “A curse on Jesus!” and no one can confess “Jesus is Lord”, without being guided by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them.
5 There are different ways of serving, but the same Lord is served.
6 There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to all for their particular service.
7 The Spirit’s presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all.
8 The Spirit gives one person a message full of wisdom, while to another person the same Spirit gives a message full of knowledge.
9 One and the same Spirit gives faith to one person, while to another person he gives the power to heal.
10 The Spirit gives one person the power to work miracles; to another, the gift of speaking God’s message; and to yet another, the ability to tell the difference between gifts that come from the Spirit and those that do not. To one person he gives the ability to speak in strange tongues, and to another he gives the ability to explain what is said.
11 But it is one and the same Spirit who does all this; as he wishes, he gives a different gift to each person.
1 Two days later there was a wedding in the town of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,
2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
3 When the wine had given out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no wine left.”
4 “You must not tell me what to do,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
5 Jesus’ mother then told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 The Jews have rules about ritual washing, and for this purpose six stone water jars were there, each one large enough to hold about a hundred litres.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill these jars with water.” They filled them to the brim,
8 and then he told them, “Now draw some water out and take it to the man in charge of the feast.” They took him the water,
9 which now had turned into wine, and he tasted it. He did not know where this wine had come from (but, of course, the servants who had drawn out the water knew); so he called the bridegroom
10 and said to him, “Everyone else serves the best wine first, and after the guests have had plenty to drink, he serves the ordinary wine. But you have kept the best wine until now!”
11 Jesus performed this first miracle in Cana in Galilee; there he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

1 By the seventh month the people of Israel were all settled in their towns. On the first day of that month they all assembled in Jerusalem, in the square just inside the Water Gate. They asked Ezra, the priest and scholar of the Law which the Lord had given Israel through Moses, to get the book of the Law.
2 So Ezra brought it to the place where the people had gathered—men, women, and the children who were old enough to understand.
3 There in the square by the gate he read the Law to them from dawn until noon, and they all listened attentively.
5 As Ezra stood there on the platform high above the people, they all kept their eyes fixed on him. As soon as he opened the book, they all stood up.
6 Ezra said, “Praise the Lord, the great God!” All the people raised their arms in the air and answered, “Amen! Amen!” They knelt in worship, with their faces to the ground.
8 They gave an oral translation of God’s Law and explained it so that the people could understand it.
9 When the people heard what the Law required, they were so moved that they began to cry. So Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra, the priest and scholar of the Law, and the Levites who were explaining the Law told all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God, so you are not to mourn or cry.
10 Now go home and have a feast. Share your food and wine with those who haven’t enough. Today is holy to our Lord, so don’t be sad. The joy that the Lord gives you will make you strong.”
1 How clearly the sky reveals God’s glory! How plainly it shows what he has done!
2 Each day announces it to the following day; each night repeats it to the next.
3 No speech or words are used, no sound is heard;
4 Yet their message goes out to all the world and is heard to the ends of the earth. God made a home in the sky for the sun;
5 It comes out in the morning like a happy bridegroom, like an athlete eager to run a race.
6 It starts at one end of the sky and goes across to the other. Nothing can hide from its heat.
7 The law of the Lord is perfect; it gives new strength. The commands of the Lord are trustworthy, giving wisdom to those who lack it.
8 The laws of the Lord are right, and those who obey them are happy. The commands of the Lord are just and give understanding to the mind.
9 Reverence for the Lord is good; it will continue for ever. The judgements of the Lord are just; they are always fair.
10 They are more desirable than the finest gold; they are sweeter than the purest honey.
11 They give knowledge to me, your servant; I am rewarded for obeying them.
12 No one can see his own errors; deliver me, Lord, from hidden faults!
13 Keep me safe, also, from wilful sins; don’t let them rule over me. Then I shall be perfect and free from the evil of sin.
14 May my words and my thoughts be acceptable to you, O Lord, my refuge and my redeemer!
12 Christ is like a single body, which has many parts; it is still one body, even though it is made up of different parts.
13 In the same way, all of us, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether slaves or free, have been baptized into the one body by the same Spirit, and we have all been given the one Spirit to drink.
14 For the body itself is not made up of only one part, but of many parts.
15 If the foot were to say, “Because I am not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” that would not keep it from being a part of the body.
16 And if the ear were to say, “Because I am not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” that would not keep it from being a part of the body.
17 If the whole body were just an eye, how could it hear? And if it were only an ear, how could it smell?
18 As it is, however, God put every different part in the body just as he wanted it to be.
19 There would not be a body if it were all only one part!
20 As it is, there are many parts but one body.
21 So then, the eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” Nor can the head say to the feet, “Well, I don’t need you!”
22 On the contrary, we cannot do without the parts of the body that seem to be weaker;
23 and those parts that we think aren’t worth very much are the ones which we treat with greater care; while the parts of the body which don’t look very nice are treated with special modesty,
24 which the more beautiful parts do not need. God himself has put the body together in such a way as to give greater honour to those parts that need it.
25 And so there is no division in the body, but all its different parts have the same concern for one another.
26 If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts suffer with it; if one part is praised, all the other parts share its happiness.
27 All of you are Christ’s body, and each one is a part of it.
28 In the church God has put all in place: in the first place apostles, in the second place prophets, and in the third place teachers; then those who perform miracles, followed by those who are given the power to heal or to help others or to direct them or to speak in strange tongues.
29 They are not all apostles or prophets or teachers. Not everyone has the power to work miracles
30 or to heal diseases or to speak in strange tongues or to explain what is said.
31 Set your hearts, then, on the more important gifts. Best of all, however, is the following way.
14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee, and the power of the Holy Spirit was with him. The news about him spread throughout all that territory.
15 He taught in the synagogues and was praised by everyone.
16 Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath he went as usual to the synagogue. He stood up to read the Scriptures
17 and was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to set free the oppressed
19 and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.”
20 Jesus rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. All the people in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him,
21 as he said to them, “This passage of scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read.”

4 The Lord said to me,
5 “I chose you before I gave you life, and before you were born I selected you to be a prophet to the nations.”
6 I answered, “Sovereign Lord, I don’t know how to speak; I am too young.”
7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say that you are too young, but go to the people I send you to, and tell them everything I command you to say.
8 Do not be afraid of them, for I will be with you to protect you. I, the Lord, have spoken!”
9 Then the Lord stretched out his hand, touched my lips, and said to me, “Listen, I am giving you the words you must speak.
10 Today I give you authority over nations and kingdoms to uproot and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”
