21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
II. BODY
A. Parents & Children mutually Submit
Eph 6:1
Ephesians 6:1 ESV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
a. Children submit by obeying your parents
1. obedience:
i. Paul is making a clear reference to 5th o the 10 commandments found in Ex 20:12:
-1st kid (under 10) 2 find ref. & run up hear gets a surprise
*have kid read ref.
Eph 6:
Ephesians 6:2–3 ESV
2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
-therefore obedience includes honoring
*honoring: to value; esteem; to give respect, recognition, often implying action 2 show that honor
respect, give recognition, often implying action to show that honor
~more than just doing what ur told
~it’s living in such a way that pleases & shows respect for parents
*the blessing:
~go well with:
~live long in the land: clear ref. to promise land 4 Isr.
~in summation:
ii. notice it says in the Lord
Ephesians 6:1 ESV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
- if ur obeying ur parents “in the lord” ur recognizing God’s spirit in them & therefore being lead by HIM
*if that’s not enough, ur faith to trust ur parents even when u don’t understand all the reasons reflects ur trust in God and his leading & will help u to learn trust in God, even when u don’t see all HIS reasons for what we will walk through in life
~If we cannot trust our parents whom we do see, how can we trust God whom we don’t see?
*but pastor, my parents aren’t christian so I guess I don’t have to obey them, um know!
-by obeying ur parents ur obeying God
-By obeying ur parents ur obeying God!
-Obeying ur parents is also a way to show Christ, who obeys the Heavenly Father!
-1st kid (under 10) 2 find Phil 2:8 & run up hear gets a surprise
*have kid read ref.
Phil 2:
Philippians 2:8 ESV
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
ii. For this is right
ii. For this is right
- Right: just & proper, because this is what is due to parents
iii. No expiration date on honoring your parents
iv. Children we gotta obey because it pleases God
Colossians 3:20 ESV
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
- What’s our motivation?
b. Parents submit by nourishing their children in Christ
Eph 6:
Ephesians 6:4 ESV
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
1. provoke is capricious exercise of authority
capricious exercise of authority
i. provocation looks like unnecessary rules & regulations & endless petty correction
not unnecessary rules and regulations and endless petty correction
-One o the best ways to keep from provoking our kids to anger is before we push our agenda, heavy handed discipline, or force obedience we could consider the situation from their perspective
~How r they viewing the situation?
-its the constant pressure to out perform & act perfectly that comes with constant highlighting all their faults!
*who here was the perfect example o a godly child growing up?
*then how can we expect our kids to be?
ii. provocation invokes anger
iii. provocation invokes discouragement
-One o the best ways to keep from provoking our kids to anger is before we push our agenda, heavy handed discipline, or force obedience we could consider the situation from their perspective
~How r they viewing the situation?
Col
Colossians 3:21 ESV
21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
-Some good ways to keep frm provoking our kids 2 anger is:
*before we push our agenda, exact heavy handed discipline, or force obedience we could consider the situation frm their perspective
~How r they viewing the situation?
*what form o discipline is best for ur child?
2. instead As parents we raise up our children:
i. notice the contrast btwn provoking a child & raising 'em up
Ephesians 6:4 ESV
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
ii. raise up literally means to nourish
ii. raise up literally means to nourish
-that is: provide care & provision
-the word was already used to describe a husbands role:
Eph 5:
Ephesians 5:29 ESV
29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,
*husbands/dads… 1 o our primary responsibilies is to nourish!
~nourish our wives that she may grow closer to God
~nourish our children that they may learn how to have a close relationship w/God
*how do we nourish our children?
~
-nourish children in the Lord’s discipline
*discipline: correction,” “chastening,”
~suggests discipline that regulates character
- nourish children in the Lord’s instruction
*instruction: putting in mind, training through encouragement & correction
a putting in mind
-the question is, who’s doing the disciplining & instructing?
*the phrase is “discipline & instruction of the Lord
~what if our job as Jesus following parents is to nourish our Children to have rel. w/God that they will come to hear, understand, & receive God’s discipline & instruction for their whole life!
~Yes, God will use us as parents to discipline & instruct our kids to follow all Jesus says & does
^but we r reproducing in our kids OUR REL. w/God
^therefore, we r nourishing our kids to have a rel. w/God
iii. more than taking them to church & church functions!
-more than teaching them right from wrong/do’s & don’ts
*Who here can live up 2 the law perfectly?
-Gotta be more 2 it than teaching ‘em how to b a good person
*it’s teaching ‘em how to know Christ & grow in HIM
*it’s teaching ‘em how to hear his voice, watch & wait for HIS prompting & then obey HIS prompting
*right from wrong has to stem from a Relationship w/God
*knowing & doing right from wrong happens after recognizing
~starts w/our own personal rel. w/God (can’t teach what we don’t know & do
~look @...
Deuteronomy 6:4–7 ESV
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
Deut 6:4-
~Starts w/us knowing who God is (YHWH ur God is 1), & the nature o that rel:
^a whole hearted loving faithfulness
~moves toward loving obedience to HIM
~then to passing this rel to our children through teaching, talking with them about it in every situation we find ourselves in
-Who’s job is it to raise up 1’s children in the LORD?
*it’s not the church’s responsibility it’s ours (particularly the Father’s)
-How?
*what if our kids happened to find us praying & reading our bible in our daily life?
*what if we (fathers in particular) lead the charge to make engaging w/other believers the priority by going to the Church building
*what if we lead our kiddos 2 the front where the noise makers r & show 'em what worship looks like?
~what if we were the 1’s raising our hands & sining 2 God in the front o the sanctuary?
*what if we lead our kids in regular family prayer & devotion (just 5 min a week to start)
-if we don’t they will c our priorities & mimic those priorities
*if we prioritize 20hrs o tv a week, so will they
*if we prioritize football over Church, family time, family devotions, etc (we’ll find ‘em prioritizing sports in J.H. & High School)
