Galatians 1:11–24 KJV 1900
11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. 12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: 14 And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, 16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: 17 Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. 18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. 19 But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother. 20 Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not. 21 Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; 22 And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ: 23 But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. 24 And they glorified God in me.

Introduction

Today we will see Paul respond to the accusations about the gospel with the fooling statements
1. It is Not man made
It is Not man mades
2. It is revelation from Jesus Christ
3. It has life Changing power
It is revelation from Jesus Christ
4. It is taught By Jesus Christ
It has life Changeing power
It is taught By Jesus Christ

I. The Gospel is not man-made v11

Galatians 1:11 KJV 1900
11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
Paul emphasizes in this verse that the gospel is not man-made.
The word Certify means to make clear and the root of the word sugustes that a formal statement is to follow which is exactelly what happends. What Paul is saying is I make clear to you that the truth which I preached is not mine nor any other mans gospel”
The word Certify means to make clear and the root of the word suggests that a formal statement is to follow which is exactly what happens. What Paul is saying is I make clear to you that the truth which I preached is not mine nor any other man’s gospel”
-For this Gospel is the Gospel of God not the Gospel of man
Throughout this section of the letter Paul denies three posible sources for false teaching. The first one seen here is “according to man” what paul is emphisizing is the source of the gospel is not something man has made up.

However How comon is it that we add things to the gospel. The gospel is the truth that salvation is through grace alone in Christ alone. but even today we have added things to it

Salvation by works is the big one but there is much more to legalism than just adding to salvation.
Certify here means to make clear and suggusts that there will be a formal statement to follow so what Paul is saying is: I make clear to you that the gospel which I preached to you is not mine.

“legalism is by definition a lifestyle of repeated attempts to constrain the flesh without changing the hart”

Paul denies three posible sources for his teaching the first one seen here is “according to man” the idea is that the source of the gospel is not something that man has made up.

2. The Gospel is Revelation from Jesus Christ v.12

Galatians 1:12 KJV 1900
12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
This verse reveals the second and third possible source for false teaching where Paul denies that he received the gospel from a man. and also, he was not taught is from any source other than revelation from Christ himself.
The galations would have received the gospel from the teaching of Paul but paul wanted to emphisize that is not how he received it. He received it through the direct revelation of Christ.
The galations would have received the gospel from the teaching of Paul but Paul wanted to emphasize that is not how he received it. He received it through the direct revelation of Christ.
We today have a special gift in the word of God in that we can be taught through revelation of God simply by reading His word

3. The Gospel has Life Changing Power V. 13-16

Galatians 1:13–16 KJV 1900
13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: 14 And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, 16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:
Galatians 1:13 KJV 1900

A. in the past Paul
Galatians 1:13–14 KJV 1900
13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: 14 And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.
13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:
Paul begins with focusing on his former life before he was a Christian. Paul says
“ye have herd” indicating it is likely he had told them of all that he had done before his conversion.
“ye have herd” indicating it is lickly he had told them of all that he had done before his coversion.
He continues with the satetment byond mesure I persecuted the church of God and wasted it”
He did not only persecute the church, but he did it at a high level beyond messure.
He continues with the statement beyond measure I persecuted the church of God and wasted it”
Paul was greatly feared within the early church and he refrences this here
He did not only persecute the church, but he did it at a high level beyond measure.
Paul was greatly feared within the early church and he references this here
Remember that Paul was formally Saul and a religious leader, therefore he did profit from the Jewish religion. Basically, What Paul is saying is that he has been zealous for his entire life, but before he was a believer that zeal was devoted to advancing as a Pharisee in Judaism and the traditions of the Jewish religion.
14 And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

Rember that Paul was formally saul and a religious leader, therfore he did profit from the jewish religion. Basiclly What Paul is saying is that he has been zellous for his entire life, but before he was a believer that zeal was devoted to advancing as a Pharesee in Judisim and the triditions of the Jewish religion.

Do not be parasitical
Do not be pharisitical
But
15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace,
15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace,
Galatians 1:15–16 KJV 1900
15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, 16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:
16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:
16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:
Paul transfers from the Zeal He had as a religious leader to His new zeal He has for the gospel. No one in the new testament Church had as much Zeal as Paul did. And Paul reminisces throughout His letters at How amazing God was saving Him from His past.
It is no different Here where Paul shows an overwelming amount of Graditude to God by Reavealing Christ to Him and not only that but allowing Him to preach The Gospel.
It is no different Here where Paul shows an overwhelming amount of Gratitude to God by Revealing Christ to Him and not only that but allowing Him to preach The Gospel.

4. The Gospel is Taught By Jesus Christ V. 14-24

Galatians 1:14–24 KJV 1900
14 And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.
Galatians 1:17–24 ESV
17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. 18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days. 19 But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother. 20 (In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie!) 21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22 And I was still unknown in person to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23 They only were hearing it said, “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” 24 And they glorified God because of me.
Gal 1:1
A.in Relationship to Jerusalem
Galatians 1:17–21 KJV 1900
17 Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. 18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. 19 But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother. 20 Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not. 21 Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia;
Galatians 1:17–20 KJV 1900
17 Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. 18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. 19 But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother. 20 Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not.
17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.
Paul again stresses he did not receive the Gospel from those who had gone before Him. He states Damascus which is the place in which was converted by Christ himself.
Paul then waited three years after his conversion and went to visit Peter. This visit was one of personal nature and he left because of a threat to his life.
-Paul again stresses he did not receive the Gospel from those who had gone before Him. He states Damascus whuch is the place in which was converted by Christ himself.
Paul had a great time meeting this apostle, but nowhere is it suggested that he received theological instruction from Him
-Paul then waited three years after his conversion and went to visit Peter. This visit was one of personal nature and he left because of a thret to his life.
He also met James the brother of the Lord and a leader in a church in Jerusalem
The point Paul is making here is that he only met two of the apostles.
-Paul then waited three years after his conversion and went to visit Peter. This visit was one of personal nature and he left because of a thret to his life.
Paul affirms before God that the account he is giving is accurate. Paul affirms that he had not as he had been accused of that he was mis-representing his relationship to the twelve.

29 And he spoke and disputed against the Hellenists. But they were seeking to kill him.

Galatians 1:21–24 KJV 1900
21 Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; 22 And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ: 23 But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. 24 And they glorified God in me.

This is important that he went to Syria and Cilica because the fact that he worked for an extended time in Syria and Cilicia would have been why he was previously unknown to the churches off Judea.
Because of the distance between him and Jerusalem he could not have been commissioned by the apostles nor could he have been under their authority or oversight.
Because of the distance between him and jeruselum he could not have been comissioned by the apposles nor could he have been under their authority or oversight.
Due to His work in the north and the fact he paid no new visits to Jerusalem and that he was unknown to the Christians who lived in Judea. What is being driven home here is the accusations that were being made against him could not be true if he was unknown to the apostles. and it was only after many years he started him missionary Journeys with the first being in Anioc
21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia.

one who “set himself up as an apostle” would not have waited so long.

Galatians 1:23–24 KJV 1900
23 But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. 24 And they glorified God in me.
23 They only were hearing it said, “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.”
The Church in Judea had nearly forgotten Paul but they heard reports that the one who once persecuted the church and tried to destroy it is preaching the gospel
he tried to destroy and most certenly this would have included justification by faith apart from works
-This phrase -they glorified God because of me was a hudge blow to the Judizers.
