God’s Sovereignty and Ability

Laborers in the Vineyard

Literary Context:
Wild Grapes and Farmed Grapes
Master
Characters: Master and Laborers, Foreman
Laborers
Five groups of laborers
Task: pick grapes
Pay: A day’s wage
Issue: Same pay no matter how many hours worked
Solution: God is sovereign, He is generous
Resolution: Work for the joy of serving Jesus, and not for gain, thank God for his generosity, rather than begrudge Him for his generosity to those you might deem “unworthy”
Main Point: God is gracious
Exhortation: Thank God for his graciousness and goodness to accept tax collectors and sinners, the Gentiles, beginning with God’s chosen people, and ending with the Gentiles, the whole world.

The Master Needs Laborers

First: The Laborers (0hr; 6a)
Second: Idle in the Marketplace (3rd hr; 9a)
Third: Same group (6th and 9th hrs: 12p and 3p)
Fourth: Others standing idle “un-hired” (11th hr: 5pm)

At Evening: Equal Payment

The last get paid first until the first are paid
The First workers (last paid) complain that they didn’t receive more for their longer commitment (Similarity with Prodigal Son)
Grumbling against God (; ; )
Numbers 14:27 ESV
“How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me.
Master replies:
He committed no wrong
They are receiving their agreed wages
Encourages the discontented workers to be content
He is sovereign to do what he wants with his possessions
Asks: Is the discontented worker angry at the generosity of the master?
The Evil Eye here again ()
Matthew 6:23 ESV
but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
Matthew 6:19–24 ESV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
The last will be first, and the first last.
God’s kingdom is different from the kingdoms of the world. If we approach the sovereignty of God in the way we approach human affairs, we’ll be in danger of being “last” in His kingdom.
Matthew Explanation of the Text

Those who make the world’s values primary and place them above God will be “last” at the eschaton, but those who put Christ first and find themselves last in this world will receive all the kingdom rewards of

So What?

Matthew 2. Acceptance

Christians often resent and look down on many whom God has accepted, whether on racial, ethnic, or economic (e.g., the homeless) grounds
