The gospels record 60 encounters Jesus had with various groups or individuals.  Eight were with people of high reputation. (In four of these He was rebuking them for their sin.)  Twelve encounters were with average people and 40 were with the hurting, downcast “losers” of His day.  They were lepers, sick, handicapped, demonpossessed.  Samaritans or tax collectors – the outcasts of society.  For all of these He had compassion.  He was drawn, not driven, to do the will of His Father, who is “the Father of mercies and God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3).  We are to be like Him, to be “little Christs,” as C. S. Lewis suggests.  In our hurting world we are to be His hands and His feet to minister to the hungry, the naked and the sick.
