Pray II

Open your Bibles to James chapter 5 verses 13 to 18. This will be our second to last sermon in the exposition of James. Third-to-last if we take 1/2 a review, but we're a very near the end. James 5 13 to 18

are young people? I helped us yesterday. I review the Book of James if you think all the way back to when we began this series, we began at September 9th. We took a little break around Christmas time. But this is our 15th sermon in the Book of James and we said that the thesis the big idea of the Book of James is that Faith Works? We're not saved see if you can think this thought we're not saved by good works, but we are saved unto good works. So how do you become a Christian you come a Christian by putting your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. The doing things for widows a doesn't make you acceptable in God's sight. When are young people I get to the other side and they stand before the Lord on Judgment Day? They're not going to say remember February 8th 2019 when we visited widows that's not going to happen. They're going to stand there confident that their sins have been atoned for by the Lord Jesus Christ that they have the victory in him nevertheless that does not mean that good works are irrelevant to our Christian faith. We're not saved by those good works, but we are saved unto those good works and the Book of James reviews this point over and over again. So if you look at the end of chapter one, he tells you James 1 2728 religion that is pure and undefiled before God in the father is this to visit orphans and widows in their Affliction and the key Oneself unstained from the world. That's James's think that's the real deal those who have truly put their faith in Christ trust in Christ. I show it by demonstrated by the wife. They will if he comes back to that point in Chapter 2 at the end where he says as the body apart from the spirit is dead. So also Faith apart from works is dead James 2 26 or as you can back up to verse 14, what good is it? My brother's if someone says he has Faith but does not have Works can that sort of Faith save him? The sort of faith that is saving Faith bears fruit it it it issues forth in love and care for people. I'm part of the Legacy that Pastor Tim got his use for pastor Tim's leadership and used he and Amy here and the and others is not simply not them is this idea that we're going to have a project every February where we make a Valentine's and we go out and visit people who can't get out and listen that is the heart of the thing that that were showing ourselves and Christian Community were showing but James calls True Religion an over and over again James Paints the vision of what true of the fruit that true Faith should bear. But he says it should characterize how we talk our speech and so many times of what comes out of our mouths is not appropriate and James says that we ought to confess that and and grow in it. He certainly also challenges us that it should affect our finances and are planning. He says they're at the end of change a chapter four. Now listen you who say today or tomorrow, we will go to this or that City spend a year there carry on business and make money. You don't know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You're a Mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. James chapter 5 we saw in in January. He especially goes after the rich and that would be us all those who God has blessed material. I need says come now you rich weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are mathy. If we don't remember how the Lord's work and do what he has called us to Faith makes a difference in how we handle our finances and how we talked and how we care for people and then we've seen we saw beginning last week many other examples as well that Faith praise that God's people are praying people and I survey the passageway last week and I said said to you that there is some in-depth questions that could be asked about the passage. So we want a survey it again this week and then come back to Questions James 5 beginning of verse 13 moving through Verse 18. Is anyone among you suffering let him pray? The stop and ask you do you qualify for this you qualify for suffering. If you do pray. Is anyone cheerful. Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the Elders of the church and let them pray over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick and the Lord will raise them up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working Elijah was a man with a nature like ours and he prayed fervently that it might not rain and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth, then he prayed again and the heaven gave rain and the Earth for its fruit the word of the Lord. Let's pray Our Father in heaven. We ask that you would light this up in front of us and that you would Challenge and motivate our hearts to be a Praying people all the time. Where do we pray that when we're suffering when we're children cheerful when we're sick when we battle send that we would respond with prayer. We also pray that we would be a church that dives deep into your word and wrestles with its intended message that you give us with great clarity. We ask this in the power of the spirit for your glory. Amen. If you look at your sermon notes, I've given you more sermon notes then on normal because I just want you to see a couple things in it helps to illustrate those on paper.

Last week we said that our go with the sermon is always to look for a Biblical bullet fired at the wife of The Listener that there should be a clear proposition that comes from the text that intersects and is relevant to life and you should be able to look down at the words of the Bible read them for yourself and see this is the message that God has all this expository preaching the exposition for the clear teaching of scripture. Where are we going live forever looking for a church when when my time as over as a pastor, which will be soon enough in God's Providence look for always look for pastors and teachers who do the clear exposition of the word. Have you looked down at this text? I've shown you that it cannot be mixed. That this text is about prayer prayer is explicitly mentioned in every one of the verses given and I have underline them for you. So I won't reiterate the passage that I just read. And we saw last week the central thesis of this passage cannot be missed Christian should respond to the varied experiences of life with prayer. If true faith is at work in your life, you should be a Praying people and much of what we do around here is equipping you to be praying people on the reason that we learn the Lord's Prayer is not that we have a chant that we say mindlessly in church as though it's a manttra but rather that we have a hand rails that were walking along and when you get these phone calls that someone is ill or someone is struggling, you know to begin your prayer that you can say Our Father Who Art in Heaven God you're there you're on the throne and I can look to you. Hallowed be thy name you can remind yourself. My first order of business is to be Central in the Lord Jesus Christ. I am a Christian. Guy Kingdom Come This World. I've said this about four times this week. This world is a really broken place. It is broken and every way we we we live in a broken time. And so even as we have particular points of Brokenness that drive us to the father and put us on our knees. We asked Jesus Come Back by kingdom come thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven. Give us our daily bread. You are so frail. I am so frail. A microscopic virus can take us down. The smallest things and we respond with prayer and James James gave us a several. Situations in which the price is anyone among you suffering please pray, please pray and I told you that please as my abbreviation to pray for people physically logistically with all that needs to be done in life emotionally and Also spiritually pray for people and bounce twice. Is anyone among you cheerful let him sing praise and I hope that if you don't Google hymns on the internet that you have a Hymnal at home or or a collection of Christian songs, if you're more contemporary in your music than I am that that you go through and remind yourself of those words that minister to your soul. I did that again this morning and I just went to one that that caught my attention. I heard an old old story. Have a savior came from Glory. How he gave his life on Calvary to save a Wretch like Me. That's the story of the gospel and in singing this you're reminding your heart of the good news that you're saved. I heard about his groaning of his Precious Blood atoning. Think about how much is said just in that line? It didn't it to remind yourself Christ suffered and shed his blood in my behalf. Then I repented of my sins and won the victory. Listen, are you cheerful sing songs of praise? I heard about his healing of his cleansing power revealing how he made the lame to walk again and cause the blind to see and you understand that's just a preview of what he's going to do in the future 1 all have died and Christ will rise in Christ. And then I cried dear Jesus come and heal my broken spirit and somehow Jesus came and brought to me the victory. I heard about a mansion He has built for me in glory. John 14, I'm not your hearts be troubled you believe in God believe also in Me In My Father's House. There are many mansions and I heard about the streets of gold beyond the crystal sea about the angels singing and the old Redemption story and some sweet day. I'll sing up there the song of victory victory in Jesus my Savior forever. He sought me and bought me with his redeeming blood. He loved me ere I knew him. God loved me before I knew him and all my love is due him. He punched me to Victory beneath the cleansing flood. So listen spawned to Life by singing songs like that have having Hymnal that you go through. Is anyone among you sick will come back to this more. Let them pray a god answers prayer of Lincoln. Yeah, we praise the Lord with that is anyone a struggling a James says confess your sins to one another and I asked you this week and your family with the people that you're intimate with and your clothes with when you talk to one another do you acknowledge and confessed? Okay, here's the area that I'm working on. This is this is something where I need to grow and be increasingly conformed to the image of Christ. Well, that's the high-level view of this passage. And if we go no further than your well-served with this text, but I want to acknowledge to you that this is a passage that there are great depths the plum here and further questions to be asked and I've given to you in your notes several questions follow-up questions that we can consider question. Number one. I've given you actually five of them. What does James mean by sick? What does he mean when he says is anyone among you sick let him call for the Elders of the church. A second question a question of application in theology who are the Elders of the Red Brick Church. If you are if the scripture is explicit that there are times that you should be calling on the elders. Who is it that you should be calling on and how do you apply that in life? 1/3 question that we have by way of studying this passage. What is a significance of anointing with oil and Bradley? I'd given you the three options there. Is it ritual is it medicinal or is it symbolic? So when it says that the elders should anoint someone with oil what it what is a reason for that? And how do we apply that today? Should we expect James says that the the prayer of faith verse 15th will save the one who is sick. Does that mean that we can always expect in this life that we will be physically heal and say well that's that's what happened on some level of Justin. So that should we expect that demand that if you will of God every time that we Face cancer or face the diabetes or face a virus. And what about Elijah isn't it? Interesting that In this passage that James point us to the example of Elijah and why is that important? So these are questions that we can kind of Plum and we can be more technical with and we were last week now, let's get really technical for a minute. We know that the original Greek or the original I already give you the answer the New Testament was not originally written in English It Was Written in Greek in Greek. It was in Greek It's All Greek To You It's All Greek to me. It's actually all greet everyone because that's what it was written in. So we have Greek copies of the original Greek manuscripts. We don't have the original will have the original. Letter of James but we have many many many manuscripts and then we work to translate those into English. One of the things that a pastor's often do to prepare for Ministry is to study Greek and to know Greek so that we can make sure we're being responsible in his and how its preached know. It's interesting that sometimes in the translation. We have to make decisions about how to translate a particular word. In this context we have to decide how do we translate this word sick? Is anyone among you sick. But the number one way we have we have Greek lexicons. I have Greek Lexicon. So now they're online and and now you can probably any of you can get to them and these are like big dictionary. We had to buy when I was in seminary a hard copy that cost a small fortune and then you would go through them and you would look up how do you translate this word? But of course, those are the opinions of the people who make the Lexicon so The number one rule for how you translate a Greek word is to consider how that same word is used throughout the Greek New Testament. You work. I can't tell you how many times I've done this. Look at all the occurrences of a particular word and see all the context that it is used. It know what's further really interesting In this passage. Is that the word for sick look at verse 14. Is anyone among you sick call for the elders that's verse 14 and look at Meijer 15th, and the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick and the Lord will raise them up. So you see sick appearing twice in this passage. But what's fascinating is in the original language to different words for sick are used there are translations translate them both sick, but they're two different Greek words. It might be is anyone of you we might be saying something like is any one of you is anyone of you a physically hurting or something like that. We did we do that all the time in our language. So we need to if we're considering this word sick and end that's translated sick. We want to know precisely. What does that mean? There's two words that we have to get out and I've given them to you both there and I'm giving you an alternative a translation. The alternate translations I have given you are weak and weary so we might translate this. If you look on your sermon notes, what does James mean by sick while is anyone among you weak and one of the standard dictionary says this to be this word is to be sick and as a result in a state of weakness and incapacity to be sick to be able to be disabled. It's used in Luke 4:40. They brought those who are sick with various diseases to him to be he'll so that's another example of one that word occurs. This particular Greek word is this won't be on the test. Okay, it's not going to be on the test and you don't need to know and you can understand the Bible just fine without a sudden grief, but this is just a little extra for you. I've actually given you the Greek word their ostinato. So the first it's in Greek and then I've also given you the transliteration of it how you would say it in English hasta know if you're if you're riding on your notes, what you can do is circle the vowel a that begins the word ostinato because then that means strength and the a disc negates the meeting. So if we say something is asymmetrical do we mean it's symmetrical we mean just the opposite so the original language work like that as well and so this Word, you can always do that. I'm translating words, but but it has the idea of being without without strength non-us technical. Okay, when I always get this technical but we need to do what what what once in awhile. It doesn't only refer to being ill it also refers in the Greek New Testament to just being weak in your disposition. So if you look at the example given you and the text there Romans 14:1 and to accept him whose faith is weak without passing judgment on disputable matters. One man's Faith allows indeed everything but another man's is Faith is weak eats only vegetables. This had to do with some people their consciences were tender about food that have been sacrificed to Idols are like I just can't eat that and and Jake Paul says in Romans if your faith is weak don't do it. That's a whole nother tangent. I don't have time to go down. But but the only thing you need to or pursue the only thing you need to know for these purposes is that this word we translate sic can mean anything from being physically ill too emotionally and spiritually weak. The way we would say this in the in a technical way is it has a broad semantic range or a broad range of meaning if so, well, okay. You said there's two words translated 6 year of what what about the second one while you see that point to on your outlines? It's the word weary. It means to become tired and spirit to gradually lose one's motivation to accomplish is to lose one's motivation to accomplish some goals to become discouraged to become tired of out the hard thing about this word and God God knows what he's doing. I'm not questioning Lord, but the hard thing about this word is it only appears one other place in the Greek New Testament. The only other time it shows up is in Hebrews 12:3 consider Christ to endure such opposition from sinful men so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. No, I'm just still all that to say this to you. These words translated sick can mean anything from physically ill at one end of the Continuum to completely worn out and depressed at the other end of the Continuum. We could translate it either way. So we might translate this that you can make a case that this would be translated. Are you discouraged? Are you down? Pretty worn out emotionally call the Elders together. We could also say I do you have pneumonia. Do you are you do you have diabetes? Do you have these things then call the Elders? Thought you you might say well which do a Scholars favor. Okay, so which is it you need to go one way or another and the answer is well they argue about it. Okay, they argue about it. So so there are some who say that this passage almost exclusively is applied to being worn out and depressed and melancholy. John MacArthur who died by the way, congratulations to John MacArthur, I don't know if you saw this but this week or last week. Maybe it's today. I'm not even sure either this week or last week. He's celebrating 50 years of being in the same Pulpit 50 years. That is an unbelievable accomplishment and his influence is incredible. He's written a commentary on every a text in the Greek New Testament. And MacArthur says he hears his conclusion about this passage. And by in a few if you've listened to doctor MacArthur, you know that when he has an opinion, he has a strong opinion. Okay, he takes those positions strongly. He says as the context and the content of this section make clear the spot subject is not physical illness or healing instead. It's concern is with healing spiritual weakness spiritual weariness spiritual exhaustion and spiritual depression through prayer as well as dealing with the suffering and the send that accompanies at MacArthur says to insert a discussion here on physical healing would be in congruous. Nothing in the preceding or following context would prepare James readers for that but a section on how to help the casualties of persecution through prayer fits perfectly into the flow of James thought specifically then he says James discussion discuss the relationship for prayer to comfort restoration fellowship and Power. So doctor MacArthur is saying here's the the primary application of this passage is if you're feeling worn out depressed spiritually exhausted call the church leaders together to pray over you now that does not mean I hasten to say that Pastor MacArthur does not mean you shouldn't pray for the sick. He's just saying that's not the central application of this text. It's a well-known that it's settled you have someone about sort of status who's arguing that way. It's all clear not so fast, by the way, I preached this passage. In July of 2001. I still have studied it for a long time and I preached it strongly that way. So I think that's a I'm pretty commendable position. However, we continue to study don't we and this is from Doug move who's a professor at Wheaton was formerly a trinity. He would be one of the foremost Evangelical conservative New Testament Scholars alive in the world today written Monumental commentary on Romans. Am I have studied with them and he's just an incredible scholar. Just what he says about translating this a few Scholars have proposed an alternative meaning that that instead of meaning physically sick. This means spiritually weak. Moose's the word can have this sense and so can the word translated sick in verse 15. Need a waiver the language of her 16 that you may be healed usually has a spiritual context in the New Testament kind of Tatian in the New Testament. What James is describing? These colors can't n MacArthur would be one is a person who is spiritually weak. The spiritual leaders of the church need to pray for this person so that his or her fervor for the word might be restored and exhortation to pray for such a situation would fit very well at the end of the letter that has regularly chastised. Its readers for such spiritual vicissitude. But besides the usual view adopted in virtually all Modern English Bibles that James is referring to cure to physical illness is overwhelmingly likely. I'm an end. Then he explains why he says when asked the Neto refers to spiritual weakness this meaning is made clear by a qualifier and it goes on and more importantly he says whenever this word is used in the gospels referring to Jesus Ministries. It refers to physical illness. So she comes down as has the church historic way that this passage references not just depression but physical illness as well. If it will where does that leave us today? So you're ignoring you see why I didn't just jump into this last week. Okay, there's a lot to talk about here. Is that where does that leave us tonight? Listen? I think the We need to remind ourselves was absolutely clear here. What is absolutely clear is that we are respond to respond to all the ups and downs of Life by being a Praying people. I think it is. Also legitimate to say I agree with a doctor MacArthur Mark mostly but I would say I think it's legitimate. To apply this to physical illness as well. I would say that this applies to the whole broad Continuum of what people face from physical illness to spiritual depression and that if we needed to work for other scriptures to build that up and to support it, we can certainly do that. And you say well so you came down where we were before is hasn't really Advanced the meaning any for me. It's just kind of giving me a headache with listen. There's a there's a reason I'm diving into it. I think we tend to limit a prayer sometimes more to the physical then to the emotional and to the depressed and to those who are weary and worn out to those who have encountered some new spiritual situation that has them at the end of the Rope. NM some of you I know because my phone at points this week has looked like a short-circuited pinball machine. Okay is a complaint to the kids if they leave their phones on at the table. I don't want to live in a pinball machine and then invariably there are times when I forget to turn mine off and it dings are beets or lights up or whatever and they get to say to me. I thought we weren't living in a pinball machine. But but our phones are are lighting up and and beeping because you all are facing very demanding situations. And I'm part of the demand is your spirit and your psyche and your emotions. and the question I would have for you is this

Are you someone who's willing humble enough that when you're really battling? That you would contact of the church leaders. And you would say to them. I need you to pray for me. I am emotionally exhausted. I am overwhelmed. We all do that when we're a physically ill I think that comes relatively easy. I we're having a knee replaced or hip replaced or we're getting chemotherapy. We are humble enough that we can say, would you pray for me about this matter? But we are midwesterners that we are self-reliant as we are. Austin train respond to the emotional ups and downs of Life by De simply putting on a good face and to be sure when James says In this passage a verse 14, is anyone among you sick. This can be this has to breath this word to include or any of you without strength. You feel just kind of all in

When he follows it up in verse 15, the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick. This certainly has a range of meaning that says God will minister to your souls and the tops of your feeling and you should be willing to call our leadership and to ask for prayer. And you can be confident that God will minister to you and that and that's why we work so hard at the songs that we think what this leads to our second question and you can see that we won't be able to spend the same amount of time and all of these but who are the Elders of the Red Brick Church scripture is clear scripture is clear that in the what in the New Testament Church. There should be a plurality of Elders who are spiritual leaders to the church that can't be missed. So if you don't look at 1st, Peter 5, I won't take the time to turn to all these collateral references. But if you're to look at 1st, Peter 5 Peter says to the elders among you I appeal to you says Peter as a fellow Elder a witness of Christ suffering. Paul says the tightest. The reason I left you in Crete Titus Chapter 1 Verse 5 was that you might appoint a plurality of Elders and every town just as I directed you 1st Peter 3 and then then Titus go to Paul goes on and Titus to lay out the qualifications for biblical eldership 1st. Timothy 3 talks about the qualifications for being an elder and then Paul comes back to it in a collateral reference. I gave to you there in verse 5 and talks about the elders who rule among you the elders who weed ammonia. So you say well I'm supposed to Call the Elders to pray for me. What does that look like at the Red Brick Church, and and I've given you a summary on the back of our church government and how we believe that this works out in the wife of our church and it's an area where we continue to strive to get better. I'm just very quickly you can read this on your own but very quickly. I remind you of the governance of the local Church Christ Reigns as a sovereign King of the church. Jesus is the head of the church his expressed as his will and Direction verbally Through the Bible. So you say I want to hear the voice of Jesus. You can hear the voice of Jesus in the scriptures. Considerations of church government then focus on how the Bible will be applied in a particular church that that's what we're always working to do in our church. How does Scripture work out here a church doctrinal statement as well as other Creeds and confessions statements play a key part in the government's or polity of a local church built on the foundation of scripture in the historical work of the church doctrinal statements summarize the central doctrines. So the reason we had that catechism question today, it's it's not scripture for safe, but it summarizes it for us these doctrines help our small mind keep those truths interview with your central to the faith. The entire church must be under an accountable to the church doctrinal statement given that the doctrinal statement is always under Christ and his word. So music Pastor. I'm always directly accountable to our doctrinal statement. That's where a doctor statement is so important. In terms of leadership the New Testament describes two offices that of Elder Pastor Bishop overseer. Those are all kind of one category the category of Elder and a deacon all other offices in the church are administrative where organizational but are not mandated by the New Testament. This doesn't mean that other offices such as missions or Christian Ed or not. Okay or necessary. It does mean that these other offices should be under the leadership of Elders and deacons should submit to their Authority and Direction with the and here we go as your keywords recognition consent and accountability of the congregation. Authority to leave the church is given to a plurality of Elders and this last paragraph is really important. App for our situation and answering our question here in James in the absence of a plurality of qualified men pastro interaction and accountability with the deacons must be increased Elders are men a specially-equipped and knowing the word and casting a vision for how it should be implemented in the life of the church prayer as we see is also Central obligation the elders the primary pictures of being an elder is that of Shepherd so here in our church and again, we're running out of time this week. So so we'll keep working on this but here in our church I Pastor Tim and I are formally the only Elders at this point and say so does that mean that you're the only has one serving in that function know what we do in this situation is we increase our interaction with the deacons and our Deacon often serve in Elder likewise so boring Sample this week I all of a sudden realize I'm going to have to make a quick trip to Columbus Ohio and that I might have to be out of town for a couple of days. And so does that mean what I just go and you're accountable to no-one? No, I mean we are contact the chair and co-chair or vice-chair of our deacons. I say this is what's going on. I make sure that leadership in general knows that what's happening. This is all a long answer to a question here. But but you see why we have to dive into this you say. Well, what does this have to do with me being sick exhausted depressed it has to do you should contact the deacons and the pastor's you should contact of those who are in spiritual leadership and ask them to pray for you and you should rest in them and you should encourage them to pray and they Respond, and and you should also say this is why it is so important for our church to be clear and our understanding of church governance because it becomes a very very practical matter. So we're always working to spread that out. We can we can talk more about that if you have questions about it, but let's quickly cover our other questions here. What's the significance of anointing with oil? The only other time that this appears in the Greek New Testament is in reference and Mark to Medicinal is it mean it's not a ritual isn't medicinal or symbolic. I think there's room for a disagreement. I have prayed for people. Our church has prayed over people and Anointed with oil that is that we have done it symbolically and we really leave that we leave that up to the people person who asked for it. So if you if you said to me I read James chapter 5 and I am struggling and I would like the elders to come anoint me with oil and pray over me. Would you do that? The answer would absolutely be yes, we would do that. We think there's a ceremonial place to annoy a person with oil and pray over them. Why don't you say what? What does that exactly look like? Well, we got a jar of vegetable oil. Okay, and we douse it over your head. No, no. No, we don't do that. Are we just dabbing to have a little oil and there's nothing magic about it that that's a think it's not some ritual that we're doing. It is something it is just a visit visible tactile reminder that God answers prayer. I should we expect to be healed. Should we expect to be healed? Yes, or no, yes or no sense. I got answers prayer and there are many times we might even say most times that when we pray for something physically a god answers that prayer and we are healed and we have a long list of how God has answered that prayer but not always not always in this life are we know that all them away the old farmer said we all have to go through enough to kill us? Okay. I mean the the death rate is still hovering around 100% And to anyone who would say that God always heals I would say but just look at Human Experience. Yeah, there's not something I'm a nation somewhere where there people always get better. But it in this sense I Christ is coming back soon, and we have the hope of the Resurrection. Finally I what about Elijah? I just want to take time to go there except to say that if you were to read his narrative from 1st Kings 17 to 19. You would see how he struggled how people questioned him how he questioned God and you'd be so enriched it if we spent time in that text. Let's pray Our Father in heaven. We pray that we would respond to the vicissitudes of life with prayer. What are the r? Range of times that we would respond to prayer would be consistent with this text where there were cheerful emotionally distraught or whether we are physically ill. We asked Lord that we would be a church where a plurality of leaders would respond to the needs of the People by gathering around them and praying. Where do we ask that? We would show that we are people who mined the dapps of your word and wrestle with how to bring it to Bear today. We pray in Christ's name. Amen.
