Introduction

Gal 3:1-5
We come to the third chapter in galations. Rember where we have been.
Galatians 3:1–5 ESV
1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith—
The judiizers have accused paul of being a fake apposle so Paul has written a letter to the church of galacia
Paul has defended his apposleship
he has addressed the gospel
He has showed his authority seprate from the apposles
Isn’t it a wonderful thing that there is only one gospel and that is a gospel of Grace.
Galatians 3:1–9 KJV 1900
1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. 5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

The failure of Faith V. 1

Galatians 3:1 KJV 1900
1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
This is one of the most emotinally charged statements in all of Paul’s letters
hat paul is saying here is you stupid Galations, who has deceived you
paul is not refering to mental incompetence, but rather their lack of wisdom.
They had mental compotence they one believed the grace gospel but someone had tricked them into beliving that they needed to do something to be a christian.
he spelled it out forthem telling them that they are verry foolish.
Paul states that they witnessed Christ’s crusifixion.
Paul states that they witnessed Christ’s crusifixion.
rember where we ended last week in verse 21 of chapter two with the question “did christ die in vain”
“did christ die in vain”
He is saying here that
you saw christ die...”before your eyes jesues christ was publicly portrayed as curcified “
He is saying here that
2. Christ did not die in vain, and are you so foolish to have forgotten that you witnessed this and saw this
3. If the gospel was by works christ’s death was pointless
But my friends… its not!

II. It is by faith v 2-9

The
Galatians 3:2–9 KJV 1900
Galatians 3:2–4 NKJV
2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?—3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have you suffered so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?
A. Pauls question
Did you receive the spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith?
He makes the point that the spirit is received by faith and not by the works of the law.
the spirit is received at salvation and it is only through Christ.
-He asks if they are now being made perfect by the flesh.
The point being according to there teaching they need to do works to be christlike
This is the danger of Lordship salvation which states that a carnal christian does not exist, but rather that if one turns away from God he was never saved to begin with
this states that one must stay the couse throught life to trully be saved
Who determines weather or not someone is trully saved?
GOd does
it is not up to us to determine weather a carnal christian is saved or not God alone knows the answer.
Galatians 3:4 KJV 1900
4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
The basic primise here is if what you are saying is true that salvation is by works why have you suffered so much in vain
if salvation is by works Christ died for no reason and our faith is for no reason
but..
Christ died to save us because it is not by works lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 3:8–9 ESV
8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things,
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Galatians 3:6–9 ESV
6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? 7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
He maks the distiction between the Old testement and the new
A. Old testement
salvation was obtained by the beleif that the messiah would come
B. New Testement
-Salvation is obtained in faith that Christ has come
What the passage is saying is that just as in the old testement how Abrahm believed in the promise
in the New testement we believe in the Finished work of Christ on the cross
SOme beleive that salvation was obtained in the old testement by keeping the Law, but what was the puroplse of the law?
-TO prove the law can not be fully upheld.
-TO prove the law can not be fully upheld.
Application
Don’t be like the galations and add things to salvation
Glory in the grace gospel
It is not our job to determine who is saved
