Song of Solomon 2:8–14 NASB95
8 “Listen! My beloved! Behold, he is coming, Climbing on the mountains, Leaping on the hills! 9 “My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Behold, he is standing behind our wall, He is looking through the windows, He is peering through the lattice. 10 “My beloved responded and said to me, ‘Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, And come along. 11 ‘For behold, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone. 12 ‘The flowers have already appeared in the land; The time has arrived for pruning the vines, And the voice of the turtledove has been heard in our land. 13 ‘The fig tree has ripened its figs, And the vines in blossom have given forth their fragrance. Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, And come along!’ ” 14 “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, In the secret place of the steep pathway, Let me see your form, Let me hear your voice; For your voice is sweet, And your form is lovely.”
–1
Verse 8
“Listen! My beloved!
Behold, he is coming,
Climbing on the mountains,
Leaping on the hills!
This statement alone is fill with so much power and wonder..
Listen!!! Notice the cry to be attentive.
Not just to to any voice but to my beloved voice,..
So many time other voices try to distract us but she listens and longs for her beloved, Why?
Because she knows He is coming!
This is the ultimate hope of the believe.
HE IS COMING BACK!
In relation to Jesus we should all have this kind of attitude as well.
To long for the return of Jesus to want it.
Psalm 121:1 NASB95
1 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come?
(NASB95)
We that our victory comes when He does.
1 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;
From where shall my help come?
To look forward to the fulfillment of the words of Isaiah
To look forward to the fulfillment of the words of Isaiah
Isaiah 40:5 NASB95
5 Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, And all flesh will see it together; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
(NASB95)
(NASB95)
5 Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed,
And all flesh will see it together;
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
And also Jesus words when he says in Matthew
Matthew 24:30 NASB95
30 “And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.
(NASB95)
We long for the day of his appearing
30 “And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.
We long for the day of his appearing
The maiden receives a new revelation of Jesus as the sovereign King.
Climbing on the mountains,
Leaping on the hills!
She sees Him as the “Lord of all the nations” who effortlessly conquers all the difficult mountains or high places.
She sees Him as the “Lord of all the nations” who effortlessly conquers all the difficult mountains or high places.
She sees Jesus as a gazelle or a young stag who may easily leap in victory on the mountains.
A gazelle or young stag (deer) has the ability to easily and quickly ascend a mountain with boundless energy.
Now remember mountain represent kingdoms.
The kingdom is now in our mist
The fullness of it will come when he comes and reigns
Now let bring this back to now!!!
King Jesus triumphed over all demonic powers and principalities.
).
Ephesians 1:22 NASB95
22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,
He has overcome all obstacles (human and demonic). We command the “mountains of adversity” to move.
The hills being smaller than mountains speak of the smaller difficulties that we face.
She recognizes the voice of her Beloved or the One that she loves. Jesus speaks tenderly to us in love when He calls us out of the comfort zone to join Him on the dangerous mountains of risk.
Each time the Bride speaks to Jesus she calls Him “my Beloved”.
When she speaks about Jesus to others she refers to Him as the One she loves. Each time Jesus speaks to the Bride in the Song,
He calls her, “My love”, referencing His affection or “fair one”, referencing her beauty.
The name “My love” is used 22 times in the Song. The name “Beloved” is used 22 times in the Song.
Song of Solomon 2:9 NASB95
9 “My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Behold, he is standing behind our wall, He is looking through the windows, He is peering through the lattice.
(NASB95)
Both verses 8 and 9 speak of the vitality of resurrection.
9 “My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag.
Behold, he is standing behind our wall,
He is looking through the windows,
In the Bible, both the mountains and the hills refer to difficulties and barriers. "He cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills." This means that nothing is too high or too great to stop Him.
He is peering through the lattice.
Both verses 8 and 9 speak of the vitality of resurrection. In the Bible, both the mountains and the hills refer to difficulties and barriers. "He cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills." This means that nothing is too high or too great to stop Him.
The Lord is the Lord of resurrection. Christ has resurrected; He has overcome all difficulties and barriers. Difficulties and barriers are things of yesterday. He is living in the next day. All difficulties are beneath His feet. The minute He leaps, all the barriers are behind Him.
Jesus is pictured as standing or as ready for action.
He is usually pictured in Scripture as sitting in rest and victory with His feet upon His enemies
Psalm 110:1 NASB95
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
When Stephen died the Lord stood up to receive him (). When He stands, then powerful things are about to happen.
Jesus stands behind a wall looking into the house in which the maiden sits undisturbed.
Jesus is described as standing outside the door of the Laodicean church as He knocked.
The beauty of Jesus is his willingness even after will build walls even after we close doors there he is still standing.
Looking through the windows
He is peering through the lattice.
Jesus looks at her through the windows with the intention of wooing her with His gaze to draw her forth into a deeper relationship with Himself.
Song of Solomon 2:10 NASB95
10 “My beloved responded and said to me, ‘Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, And come along.
(NASB95)
the KJV says “come away with me.”
10 “My beloved responded and said to me,
‘Arise, my darling, my beautiful one,
And come along.
the KJV says come away with me
this is come of my favorite word especially in a devo context
the the words the beloved one toward the one that he loves..
Arise!!!
It reminds me of the time Jesus tell the man to arise and take up his bed and walk.
Arise come out of.. get up.. we (the ones that love him) are not made to live beneath or lowly.
But to respond to his voice and his calling.. arise!!! And if he call me to do something he will release to grace to perfume it.
I can get up.. I will get up.
The is the challenge to do it then come the affirmation
He finds beauty in my rising or trying to rise
Come away with me. Sounds like the adventure of a lifetime
Mike bikels says
“Jesus is ready for action and deep partnership with the maiden. Therefore, He calls her to arise from her comfort and security to come away with Him to conquer the mountains of this fallen world. Jesus commissioned His Bride to work with Him as He brings the nations to obedience.”
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations… ()
Faith is not just about sitting with him under his side but following the one who leap on the mountain.
John Wimber said that faith is spelled, “R I S K”. Faith (confidence in God) is the way of the Kingdom.
I don’t always understand you but I will follow
Madame Guyon said, "Once His presence was a question of time and place, but now it is no longer a question of time and place. When we can trust that the Lord's presence is within us wherever we are, we will not be deceived by our inward feelings."
Song of Solomon 2:11–12 NASB95
11 ‘For behold, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone. 12 ‘The flowers have already appeared in the land; The time has arrived for pruning the vines, And the voice of the turtledove has been heard in our land.
(NASB95)
‘For behold, the winter is past,
Since the Lord is calling her to come away with Him, He speaks of His past experiences and the present facts.
The Lord reminds us of His faithfulness to us in the past in the winter season.
The winter season is dark with cold rains. It is a difficult time when few things grow outwardly.
When we are not sure if we are going to make it, the Lord proves that His banner over us is love.
Jesus reminds us of His past interventions and past faithfulness in previous days in our journey.
Jesus could say, “The winter is past and the cold rains are over and gone and your heart is still alive in Me.”
Jesus helps her to remember His love (). This is one of the main things in the Song
The rain is over and gone.
12 ‘The flowers have already appeared in the land;
The time has arrived for pruning the vines,
And the voice of the turtledove has been heard in our land.
i love how the ESV reads
Song of Solomon 2:12 ESV
12 The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.
Jesus also points to the future as He highlights the prophetic signs of a soon coming harvest.
song 2:12
Jesus also points to the future as He highlights the prophetic signs of a soon coming harvest.
We are encouraged by seeing the early stages of the Harvest.
They guarantee that the full harvest is coming soon. Seeing this gives us urgency to be prepared. We don't have years to waste.
The last season was hard, but its time to sing again.
Jesus encouraged the apostles by pointing out that the harvest was ready. Peter had recently given up his fishing business.
Within three years, the Jerusalem revival was to begin followed by the revivals in the Book of Acts. It was essential that they learn to fully trust and obey Jesus.
Lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! ()
Jesus points to the signs of the harvest. Flowers appear on the vine to signify that the harvest of grapes will soon follow.
It is clear that the “flowers of revival” are budding across the nations
The voice of the turtledove is heard in Israel at the harvest time. The fig tree puts forth the green figs just before the mature figs.
The fragrance of the young tender grapes indicates the harvest.
The time of singing associated with the harvest has begun. The greatest revival in history is around the corner.
The singing has begun. That why we have our once a month Upper Room meetings
days of worship (Global Day of Prayer, The Call, etc.) gather multitudes to stadiums to sing.
"The fig tree putteth forth..." These figs are winter figs. They signify fruit that still remains after passing through death.
"The fig tree putteth forth..." These figs are winter figs. They signify fruit that still remains after passing through death.
This fruit has passed through the cross and has been tested, but it still remains.
"The vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance" (RSV).
The vines are just blossoming; this is in the present tense. This means the situation is full of the hope of fruit-bearing and that the fruit-bearing is certain.
No one sees vine blossoms; before the flowers have time to exhibit themselves, they have turned into fruit already.
Other blossoms may not consummate in fruit. But when the vine blossoms, it will surely bring forth fruit. This is the position of resurrection. Everything that is dead is over, and the future is full of assurance.
Song of Solomon 2:14 NASB95
14 “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, In the secret place of the steep pathway, Let me see your form, Let me hear your voice; For your voice is sweet, And your form is lovely.”
(NASB95)
14 “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock,
In the secret place of the steep pathway,
Let me see your form,
Let me hear your voice;
For your voice is sweet,
And your form is lovely.”
Watchman nee says
‘Formerly, the maiden was only described as having the eyes of a dove. Now she is described as a dove itself.” Watchman Nee
The Lord calls her according to the position she is about to attain.
The Lord calls her according to the position she is about to attain.
If she hides in the clefts of the rock and in the secret places of the stairs, she will truly live a life in the Spirit. This is why the Lord calls her this way.
We find our safety in God's grace in two places, the cleft and the cliff.
The cleft of the rock speaks of the finished work of the cross.
We are to stand with confidence before God in our weakness as we present ourselves to God as we trust in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
Jesus was the spiritual Rock in Moses’ day and is the rock on which the Church is built.
They drank of that spiritual Rock…and that Rock was Christ… ()
On this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail… ()
God hid Moses in the cleft of the rock (open space in the mountain) to protect him from seeing God’s face and being struck dead by the glory of God.
You (Moses) cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live… 21 Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. ()
This hiding in the cleft of the rock was a type of salvation through the cross.
The cleft of the rock speaks of the “wounds” in Jesus’ side that He received on the cross. We hide from the judgment
of God in the cleft of the rock or in the atoning death of Jesus.
Jesus wants to see our face and hear our voice in worship and prayer as we cry for help in our weakness.
We tell Jesus that we love Him without fearing that we are hypocrites in the process.
Some think that when they struggle with sin that their voice is repulsive to God and their face is ugly to Him.
God wants us to run to Him in confidence, instead of from Him in condemnation.
Let Me see your face, let Me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.
Song of Solomon 2:14 NASB95
14 “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, In the secret place of the steep pathway, Let me see your form, Let me hear your voice; For your voice is sweet, And your form is lovely.”
)
This very matter of the cross gives satisfaction to the Lord. In the first section there is consecration, and there is the willingness to follow the Lord and bear the cross.
Now He wants to go on to put the seal of the cross upon the seeker. The countenance is what man sees, and the voice is what man hears.
Both the countenance and voice should only be found in the clefts of the rock and the secret places of the stairs.
The emphasis here is on oneness (union) with the cross. Now the cross of Christ has become her cross.
