They Watched Him There

A. This morning we’re going to continue with our series on the cross as we move toward that final hour. The cross through the resurrection morning.
B. As we move toward the cross, there is the Passover, the Lord’s Table, the betrayal.
C. The mock trial, Pilate’s: “Behold the man” and the account of the crucifixion ()
Matthew 27:27–36 NKJV
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. 32 Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross. 33 And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, 34 they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink. 35 Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” 36 Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.
D. This morning we’re going to look at the soldiers at the cross as they watched Jesus on the cross.

They Watched Complacently in the Hours of the Cruxifixion

A. These soldiers had witnessed many crucifixions.
1. Darius crucified two hundred when conquering Babylon.
2. Alexander crucified two thousand when conquering Tyre.
A common means of capital punishment for the Romans.
B. To them, just another execution.
C. This may be the reason the cross means so little to so many today.
1. They have mutilated the Master before He reaches the cross.
2. They doubt His virgin birth and reject His deity.
3. They do not accept His miracles. Just another man.
D. Who died that day?
1. The One of whom the prophets had spoken. ( and )
Isaiah 50:6 NKJV
6 I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.
Isaiah 53:3–6 NKJV
3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
The One
2. The One who was miraculously born (; )
The One
Isaiah 7:14 NKJV
14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
3. The One who could open blind eyes and even raise the dead.
E. See who is dying there, and you will never get over it.
F. Gypsy Smith, British evangelist from the 1800’s: “I have never lost the wonder of it all” Second...

They Watched Calmly in the Hour of the World’s Greatest Crisis

A. This was the hour of the ages, and they were not moved.
B. When the darkness came and the earth shook, their leader would finally be shaken and exclaim: “Truly this was the Son of God”
C. They were just observers as the scene unfolded before them.
There were the priests who taunted Him.
The thieves who taunted Him as well.
The wandering disciple afar off in tears.
The little band of faithful ones near the cross.
D. The forces of heaven and earth stand poised.
He could have called then thousand angels.
The earth hovered between destruction and deliverance.
E. This is also an hour of crisis, and many are unmoved.

They Watched Carelessly in the Hour of God’s Greatest Example of Caring

A. They had gambled with His garments by casting lots (It was for diversion; to pass away the time while they waited for his death, they would play a game at dice for the clothes;)
B. They heard the words from the cross.
It was for diversion; to pass away the time while they waited for his death, they would play a game at dice for the clothes;
