Ephesians 4:1–6 ESV
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

“When I was a boy, my father, a baker, introduced me to the wonders of song,” tenor Luciano Pavarotti relates. “He urged me to work very hard to develop my voice. Arrigo Pola, a professional tenor in my hometown of Modena, Italy, took me as a pupil. I also enrolled in a teachers college. On graduating, I asked my father, ‘Shall I be a teacher or a singer?’ “‘Luciano,’ my father replied, ‘if you try to sit on two chairs, you will fall between them. For life, you must choose one chair.’ “I chose one. It took seven years of study and frustration before I made my first professional appearance. It took another seven to reach the Metropolitan Opera. And now I think whether it’s laying bricks, writing a book—whatever we choose—we should give ourselves to it. Commitment, that’s the key. Choose one chair.”

The first three chapters Paul is hammering home one concept!
He is stressing our ...

Identification - Who we are in Christ.

In Christ, In Him…
In Christ you are chosen before the foundation of the world.
In Christ you are predestined.
In Christ you are redeemed.
In Christ you are forgiven.
In Christ all things are united.
In Christ we have an inheritance
In Christ you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.
In Christ you were made alive having been dead in your traspasses
In Christ you have been reconciled to God and man.
In Christ we have peace
In Christ we are God’s temple the dwelling place of His Spirit.
Fritz Kreisler the worlds foremost violinist as travaling to London for a conert and had a hour before his ship sailed. He wandered into a music shop, where the proprietor asked if he might look at the violin Kreisler was carrying. He then vanished and returned with two policemen, one of whom told the violinist, “You are under arrest.”

Setting out from Hamburg, Germany, one day to give a concert in London, violinist Fritz Kreisler had an hour before his boat sailed. He wandered into a music shop, where the proprietor asked if he might look at the violin Kreisler was carrying. He then vanished and returned with two policemen, one of whom told the violinist, “You are under arrest.”

“What for?” asked Kreisler.

“You have Fritz Kreisler’s violin.”

“I am Fritz Kreisler,” protested the musician.

“You can’t put that on us. Come along to the station.,”

As Kreisler’s boat was sailing soon, there was no time for prolonged explanations. Kreisler asked for his violin and played a piece he was well known for. “Now are you satisfied? he asked. The policemen let the musician go because he had done what only Fritz Kreisler could do.

He spends three chapters on our identification -
Exposition -
In Chapters 4-6 he is hammering one concept!
Paul very often moves from doctrine to duty, from truth to practice, from instruction to exhortation, and we see him do that here.

Exhortation - How we should live in Christ.

Look at verse
eph 4:1
Ephesians 4:1 ESV
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
This is how you live - this is how you behave - this is how you carrie yourself.
That great theologian and scholar Aerosmith famously talked about a song - that calls you and “Walk this way”

Followers of Jesus must walk His way.

There is a certain way that in light of who we are that we should live. A certain way that remembering who’s we are we should carry ourselves and contduct our lives.
Ephesians 4:2 ESV
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

Ephesians 4:2–3 ESV
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
eph

Walking His way means being humble, gentle, and careful.

Humility - If you are going to walk his way - if you are going to walk like Jesus humility is a must. God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble!

The secret to church unity is humility.

Gentleness - This is the term used for a domesticated animal - The idea that is communicated in this term is strength under control. Christ is a picture of perfect strength under perfect control. A gentle person is not someone who demands and expects to be served but uses his/strength to serve others.
Christ was not a weak man - Christ was one of unimaginable strength that was perfectly under his control. Having power directed for the Good of the kingdom.
Ephesians 4:3 ESV
3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Walking His way means being gentle.

Walking His way means being intentional.

Walking His way means being careful.
Commitment to the faith means commitment to the faithful.

Gospel fidelity leads to corporate unity.

Ephesians 4:4–6 ESV
4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
What is the key word in the section - “ONE” Seven times in three verses Paul used the word to make a point! Unity!
Preaching the Word: Ephesians—The Mystery of the Body of Christ The Divine Origin of Christian Unity (vv. 4-6)

Many New Testament scholars believe this was an early Christian confessional hymn, and it may well have been

This is an early confession of faith. This would be something that Christians would proclaime as a confessional people - they might recite it or sing it...
The basis for the unity of the people of God is the unity of the God the people.
This is an early confession of faith. This would be something that Christians would proclaim as a confessional people - they might recite it or sing it...
We become part of the one body - the church through the Holy Spirit of God.
The spirit of God makes us part of the people of God!
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine; Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
One LORD -
Romans 10:9 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Early Christians gave their lives over this one manifestation. Christ is Lord
Believers expression of faith was closely connected to their baptism- What is baptism - it is going public with your faith in the ONE LORD Jesus Christ!
Deuteronomy 5:6 ESV
“ ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Deuteronomy 6:4 ESV
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Deu 64
Deuteronomy 6:5 ESV
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
The New Your Times posted a shocking headline about a church and her leader.
Reverend Gretta Vosper is an Avowed Atheist - An anthesit pastor.
Their congragation of 150 went to 50 as a 100 congragants walked out the door.
The UCC, like so many denominations guided by the “keep up or die” mentality, have surrendered theological conviction for the misguided hope that survival in this secular age hinges on abandoning the doctrines and precious truths of the gospel that have guided the Church since its inception. The results of this idea, however, have devastated liberal churches. It turns out that “keep up or die” really means “keep up and die.”  As Vosper declared, liberal churches do indeed fly; they fly right out of existence. Their members flee, their doors close, and the churches die fast.
“This Canadian Preacher Doesn’t Believe in God but Supports Her Church.”
The subject of the headline is the Reverend Gretta Vosper, an avowed atheist who serves as a minister in the United Church of Canada (UCC). In November of last year, the UCC almost convened an historic heresy trial against Vosper to determine if an atheist possessed the qualifications of a pastor. The Canadian church, however, capitulated and reached “a settlement” with Vosper—a decision that allowed Vosper to remain a minister in her church despite her atheistic belief.
The United Canadian Church reduced belief in God to an outdated, outmoded, and inconsequential tenet of the Christian faith.
As a congregation when you abandon the biblical faith the biblical faithful abandon you!
The unity of the God of the people reminds us of the unity of the people of God.
The gospel creates unity.
