Shadowlands

Some of you will remember the movie Shadowlands which came out several years ago. It was the motion picture adaptation of the Broadway play that told the story of C. S. Lewis and his wife, Joy. They loved each other deeply. But then Joy was diagnosed with cancer. As she struggled, so did Lewis. He struggled with all the emotions, doubts and questions that any of us would have. And yet, his intimacy with Joy was something that sustained him through it all. After Joy died, Lewis wrote these words: “It is incredible how much happiness, how much joy we sometimes had together after all hope was gone.”

Now that’s intimacy! When you are losing everything and yet the presence of your wife or your husband is enough all by itself to give you joy, that’s intimacy!
