TRUE REPENTANCE

An elderly woman had just returned home from an evening of church services, when she was startled by an intruder. She caught him the act of robbing her home of it’s valuables and she yelled, “Stop! !” (Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven…)
The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer hand cuffed the man to take him to jail, he asked the burglar , “Why did you just stand there?” The burglar said, “All the lady said, she had an ax and two 38’s!”
This morning I want to talk to you about Repentance, not just repentance, but TRUE REPENTANCE.
Repentance is a Biblical word.
Repentance is found in both the Old Testament, as while, as the New Testament.
What is Repentance?
Repentance is to turn away from your transgressions, so that your iniquities (sins) will not return.
The Old Testament thunders, the word Repent.
Ezekiel 18:30 KJV 1900
30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
Ezekiel 18:30
The New Testament vigorously, exhorts men and women to repent.
Luke 13:3 KJV 1900
3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
:
The Apostle Paul talks about the word Repent in the books of Acts.
Acts 3:19 KJV 1900
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts 17:30 KJV 1900
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
The Bible commands it.
Our wickedness demands it.
Justice requires it.
Christ preached it.
God expects it.
God commands men every where to repent.
Acts 17:30 KJV 1900
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
Acts

I. What Is Not Repentance.

Repentance is not penance.
Penance is the voluntary suffering of punishment for sin and does not involve a change of character or conduct.
People who lie on a bed of nails,
Throw themselves headlong on the ground.
Those people are doing penance.
This is a Catholic believe: Penance and Purgatory.
I promise you there is no purgatory,
I promise you, you can not work off your sins
I promise you there is a hell
It’s eternal suffering
It’s eternal darkness
It’s eternal punishment
It’s eternal burning
It’s eternal residency
In other words, Once you go there, and If you do, You go as a trespasser.
Repentance is not remorse
THERE IS NOWAY OUT.
The only way you can get forgiveness for your sin is from the Lord.
Not a priest
Not a pastor
Not a rabbi
But the Lord.
1 John 1:9 KJV 1900
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Only the Lord can forgive sins, and there is only one way to Heaven!
John 14:6 KJV 1900
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Judas was remorseful over his sin of betrayal of the Son of God.
But his hallow regret led to suicide instead of God.
Because remorse is not true repentance.
Repentance is not self-condemnation.
You may hate yourself for your sinfulness.
But self-condemnation only opens wider the wounds of guilt and despair.
We should hate our sins, not ourselves
Hate your false ways
Hate your vain thoughts
Hate your evil passions
Hate your lying tongue
Hate your coetousness
Hate your greed
But, don’t hate yourselve
Self-hatred leads to self-destruction.
It is wrong to destroy that which was created in God’s Image.
Repentance is not a word of weakness.

II. Then What Is Repentance?

Repentance is a word of Power and Action.
It is not a self-effacing emotion.
But a word of heroic resolve.
Repentance is an act that breaks the chains of captive sinners.
And sets Heaven to singing.
The Bible says in the book of .
Luke 15:7 KJV 1900
7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

A. Three Elements Of Genuine Repentance.

Element is Conviction.
You Must know what is right before you can know what was wrong.
If you get on the wrong road, you will never know it until you have some knowledge of the right road.
You stray off the highway, and first you miss the familiar markings, the customary scenery, and then suddenly the conviction strikes you that you have lost your way.
There can be no turning back unless first there is a conviction that you are going the wrong way.
Element is Contrition.
The Bible says in the book of
Psalm 34:18 KJV 1900
18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; And saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV 1900
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
2 Corinth
We must have Contrition or a godly sorrow.
As it is called in .
2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV 1900
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
It is a sincere regret over past sins and an earnest desire to walk in a new path of righteousness.
Peter, that rugged man who meant so much: and erred so often,
When he denied, he went out and wept bitterly.
Matthew 26:27 KJV 1900
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
Luke 22:61–62 KJV 1900
61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
Matthew
:
BROKENNESS, with godly sorrow for sin, is the second step towards TRUE REPENTANCE.
Element is Change.
Repentance carries with it the idea of changing
Your Mind
Your Attitude
Ways.
The Bible says, in the book of
2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV 1900
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
If we truly repentant, our will is brought into action.
We will make a reversal of direction.
And God seeing that we are in earnest (serious, you have a sincere imply) gives us the gift of eternal life.
God has given His Son the Lord Jesus Christ to die on the Cross of Calvary to shed His precious blood for your sins and mine.
John 3:16 KJV 1900
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Listen to this: GOD DID IT OUT OF LOVE.
God didn’t owe us this gift of eternal life.
If we got what we deserve, we would be burning in hell this very minute.
The song, All Because of Calvary:
All Because of Calvary:
All my sins are gone, All my sins are gone, all because of Calvary;
Life is fill of song, Life is full of song, All because of Calvary;
Christ my savior lives, Christ my savior lives, Lives from sin to set me free;
Lives
Someday He’s coming, O wondrous, blessed day, All, yes all because of Calvary.
God Had raised Him from the dead.
That provided the grounds for our salvation.
The Holy Spirit acts upon the dead souls.
That is God’s first step in convicting your heart.
God even helps us to repent.
When we become so contrite (to feel remorse or guilt) that we decide to change our way of living.
That is the Holy Spirit working through God convicting your heart.
Have you repented
Have you changed
Is your life different from how you used to be.
The repentant heart is the one God can use.
Peter repented,
And became a mighty rock in the structure of the church.
David repented,
And his joy broke forth in the music of psalms.
Jonah repented,
And the great city heard the Word of God and turned to Him.
Paul repented,
And God used him to take the light of the Gospel to a pagan world.
Oh, how we need True Repentance in our Lives today!
Oh, how we need True Repentance in our Families today!
Oh, how we need True Repentance in our Churches today!
Oh, how we need True Repentance in our Country today!
Oh, How we need True Repentance in our world today!
It’s starts with us!
If you want to see Real and True Change in our Lives, our Families, our Churches, our Country, our world.
It starts with us.
It’s the Ripple Effect.
Don’t you think it’s time for True Repentance in your life?
Repentance and Faith go hand in hand.
Acts 3:19 KJV 1900
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts
True Repentance, does not regret parting ways with sin;
False repentance does.
True Repentance, hates sin;
False repentance hates the consequences of sin.
True Repentance, accepts godly counsel and accountability;
false repentance avoids accountability.

III. 10 Signs of True Repentance

WE NAME ARE SIN AS SIN AND DO NOT SPIN IT OR EXCUSE IT.
We demonstrate godly sorrow,
True heart felt grief for your sin,
Not grief about being caught.
Not grief because you are having to deal with the consequences of sin.
WE ACTUALLY CONFESSED BEFORE WE ARE CAUGHT OR THE CIRCUMSTANTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF OUR SIN(S) CATCH UP WITH YOU.
IF FOUND OUT, WE CONFESS IMMEDIATELY OR SOON AFTER,
Come clean rather than having to have the full truth pulled from you.
Real repentance is typically accompanied by transparency.
HAVE A WILLINGNESS AND EAGERNESS TO MAKE AMENDS.
We will do whatever it takes to make things right
To demonstrate you have change.
BE PATIENT WITH THOSE YOU HAVE HURT OR VICTIMIZED.
Spend as much time as is required listening to them without jumping to defend yourself.
Don’t try to pressure them in or guilt them into forgiving you.
YOU ARE WILLING TO CONFESS YOUR SIN(S) EVEN IN THE FACE OF SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES.
TO INCLUDING;
Undergoing church discipline,
Having to go to jail,
Having your spouse leave you.
IF YOUR SIN(S) INVOLVES ADDICTION OR A PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR.
You do not neglect to seek help with a counselor,
A solid 12 step program,
A rehabilitation center.
YOU DON’T RESENT ACCOUNTABILITY.
Pastoral Rebuke,
Church Discipline.
YOU SEEK COMFORT IN THE GRACE OF GOD IN JESUS CHRIST.
By doing this you can be free of the consequences of our sin.
BE HUMBLE AND TEACHABLE.
Has there been a moment in your life that you repented of your sins
Do you recall a time in your life that by faith you accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior.
Do you truly want change in your life.
You can live a new life.
You can have the assurance that if you died at this moment, you would go to heaven.
Will you repent now.
Will you receive Him as your savior today.
