Palm Sunday

Significance of the donkey colt
In scripture
The story from Matthew
What it means to us today

Introduction

Today you can carry Jesus with you...
Matthew 21:1–11 NIV
1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5 “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ” 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” 11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Its Significance

The donkey and colt were considered a sign of nobility for leaders and the like.
An ass was valuable enough that the firstborn ass had to be ritually redeemed through sacrifice of a lamb (; ) or by killing the newborn ass

The Messiah would ride on a donkey (Zech. 9:9), the animal of the nobility in days when Israel did not have a king. The animal contrasted to the horse used in the kings’ military exploits after Solomon’s time (1 Kings 10:26) in violation of Deut. 17:16. The picture in Zech. 9 thus joins the humble suffering servant and the royal Messiah.

When the word of the Lord comes!

Matthew 21:1–7 NIV
1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. :1
There’s a couple of things at play in this story
There’s a parallel of 2 stories.
Jesus fulfilling prophecy
He came in the fullness of time
to fullfill prophesy
If God can use a donkey to reveal the Messiah, he can use us to glorify him
It was at a time when the disciples were all going to abandon Christ.
Today you can carry Jesus with you...
They hadn’t really come to grips with all that Jesus had said to them.
Then there was the owner of the donkey and her colt.
For this situation to take place he would of been already prepared by God that this was going to happen.
The scriptures don’t say who it was but ONLY how it came about.
Therefore the significance was not about the person supplying the donkey and colt, but the fact that the prophecy and it was a fulfilment of scriptures.
To the Israelite who saw and recognised Jesus coming into Jerusalem on the donkey and a colt, they would of recognised its significance to the OT scriptures and to tradition of a triumphal entry into the city.
Of a Warrior King coming back from war, possible on a horse.
But now the Prince of Peace is entering the city.
War is about to break loose on His life.
We know where that ultimately ended up…Jesus dying for our sins, conquering death and Hell and rising from the dead
There was a spiritual battle but there was a magnificent spiritual victory about to break forth.

Messiah

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord
His entry was recognised as triumphal and anointed
He was the sacrifical Lamb that was about to be slain

He represented victory over our past.

Cleansing for our present

Life for our future

Heres the point

It is amazing that God would use a donkey to bring in the king of kings and Lord of Lords into the city and fulfil prophecy from the ancient of times.
What seems ordinary and meaningless
actually carries something so significant
Today you can carry Jesus with you...
You may feel insignificant in the things of God and his will for your life.
But he sees you as His beautiful son or daughter who he loves very much and even went and died for you.
He is the lamb who died in our place, the appeasement of our sins
Two significant things that we see from todays message
Jesus paid the price for our sins - our suffering saviour and servant
He is the Messiah - king of all, ready to lay down his life for us.
Today lets recognise that Jesus has taken away our sin
Today recognise that he is our King
Miracles are in the midst of our everyday

He represents Victory of our Past

He Cleanses our Present

He gives us Life for our Future

Today lets carry Jesus into our lives...
As I awoke this morning I felt the Holy Spirit drop this into my spirit.
We use the picture of the Donkey carrying Jesus our King, our Lord, our Warrior, our Prince of Peace.
We are that Donkey carrying Jesus into our lives
We now have Victory over sin
We now have Life
We now have Forgiveness
We are Now the Carriers of the Presence of Jesus
So now let our praise break free...
Declare Hosanna to the name of Jesus.
