INTRODUCTION:
I- BLESSED ASSURANCE IS FOUND IN A PERSON ().
A- That person is Jesus Christ.
().
The Apostle John clearly identifies the person he is writing about.
That person is Jesus Christ, God’s Son!
Blessed Assurance can not be found in anyone else! ()
()
B- That person is real.
().
He is eternal.
He had no beginning.
He was physical.
Notice the adjectives used concerning the interaction of the witnesses with Christ:
“We heard him.
We saw him.
We looked upon Him with our own eyes.
We touched Him with our own hands.
C- That person is the one who was declared by the Father to be the embodiment of eternal life.
()
God the Father “revealed” Jesus Christ to the witnesses as the one “who is eternal life.”
The witnesses had experienced Jesus Christ (“have seen Him”) and confirmed that He is as was claimed.
()
The witnesses give testimony to and proclaim that Jesus is the source of eternal life.
(, )
II- BLESSED ASSURANCE IN CHRIST PROVIDES THE BASIS OF REAL FELLOWSHIP ().
A- Real fellowship within the family of faith is founded in acceptance of the proclaimed Gospel.
()
John shared the gospel of Jesus so that others might believe.
This would establish true fellowship (which includes love, trust, and loyalty).
There can be no true fellowship with those who reject the Gospel message, choosing to walk in darkness.
Real love (self-giving love) is available only as God pours his love through the believer.
Real trust comes from the shared love and values of believers.
Our modern-day contracts are a testimony to the lack of trust and trustworthiness in the world.
Loyalty is an outgrowth of the love and trust present in real Christian fellowship.
The love and trust between Paul and Timothy are a good example of this truth.
Paul could trust Timothy to carry out sensitive tasks in his own stead, with confidence.
()
B- Real fellowship is grounded in intimate fellowship with the Father and the Son, Jesus Christ.
().
Fellowship with the Father is established through the Son.
()
We are accepted by the Father in His “beloved” son.
()
Personal Illustration:
In spite of all of my faults, I was accepted by my wife’s parents because of my relationship with their beloved daughter.
Likewise, you and I are accepted by the father based upon our relationship with His Son.
III- BLESSED ASSURANCE IS THE SOURCE OF ENDURING JOY ().
A- The very purpose of the letter is to enable the sharing or real joy within the fellowship of believers.
Joy is eternally grounded in our eternal hope that is secured by the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
John writes his message to help ground the joy of his fellow believers in Christ alone!
B- Jesus stated that He desires that believers be full of joy.
The enemy has come to bring destruction and misery.
Jesus came to bring a joyful, fulfilled life.
()
()
C- The key to real joy is abiding in Christ throughout life’s journey.
