Joshua 14 ESV
These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the people of Israel gave them to inherit. Their inheritance was by lot, just as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine and one-half tribes. For Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. For the people of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion was given to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their substance. The people of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses; they allotted the land. Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. But my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the Lord my God. And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old. I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and for going and coming. So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.” Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the Lord, the God of Israel. Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba. (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim.) And the land had rest from war.
Joshua 14

Follow the example

Titus 2:2–5 ESV
Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
John 21:18 ESV
Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.”

Has Advantages

Seniors possess an earthly knowledge.

Proverbs 20:29 ESV
The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair.
Proverbs

Seniors have a spiritual maturity that only comes with experience.

“self-controlled”

THE ELDERLY MEN HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY

The spiritual elderly men have a way
that they ought to conduct themselves in this life.

The Bible says older men should be “sober-minded”.

Now, that’s not about getting drunk on alcoholic drinks.

Sober in that verse means “clear-headed, not foolish”.

They should be “dignified

Which means acting like a Christian man should.

acting like a Christian man should.

Older men should be “self-controlled

Which means to have self-control and moderate in all things.

They are to be “sound in faith

Which means being strong in faith in Jesus and the Bible.

They should be "sound in love

Which means they should not be a hateful, grouchy old man.

They must be “sound in steadfastness”

Which means that they don’t get angry when things don’t go as wanted as well as not giving up easily on people who disappoint us.

and don’t give up easily on people who disappoint us.
It is a blessing when I see an elderly man conduct himself in a godly manner, in reverence for the almighty God.
conduct himself in a godly manner,
in reverence for the almighty God.
That’s a great example for the younger men! I’m so glad that we have men like that in our church! On the other hand, it is so sad to see an older man who has become an alcoholic, a gambler, or who uses vulgar language.

On the other hand, it is so sad to see an older man
who has become an alcoholic, a gambler,
or who uses vulgar language.
He is a bad influence on the younger ones.

THE ELDERLY WOMEN HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Bible says older women should be “reverent

Which means a sense of awe toward God and a sense of respect toward others.

The Bible says older women should be “teaching by example

Which means, all change begins with you.

Why is this important?

2:5, 8, 10 In each of these verses, important statements are made concerning the desired result of “gospel living.” Such living keeps Christians from providing any legitimate grounds for the gospel (the word of God) to be reviled (v. 5; cf. v. 8). More positively, such living highlights the attractiveness of the gospel (“adorns,” v. 10). In keeping with the overall thrust of the letter, this kind of living “proves” the gospel.

2:1 But as for you indicates the sharp contrast that must exist between people, on one hand, whose deeds disprove their claim to know God (1:16), and Titus, on the other hand, who must teach the people to live in a way that accords with sound doctrine, i.e., that will affirm rather than deny their claim to know God.

2:2 The overall picture of older men is of Christian dignity and vibrant faith.

The overall picture is that seniors possess a certain Christian Dignity and Vibrant Faith that we should all seek to learn and develop.

To the young:
1. Learn from the elders, the seniors.
2. Never underestimate what God can do through someone older than you.
3. Respect those who are older. Lean on their experiences. They’ve fought a lot of battles and can save you a lot of injury and mistake, if only you won’t be too proud to seek them out and ask for their input.
To the Senior:
1. Know that God isn’t finished with you until He calls you home.
2. Actively claim the promises of God.
3. Seek to mentor the next generation.
4. Seek to bring glory to God with your Christian Dignity and Vibrant Faith.
Isaiah 46:4 ESV
even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.
