As Jesus walked towards Jerusalem for the last time.

As he walked towards what he knew would be his painful, shameful death,

As he considered the events to unfold.

Triumphant entry but that the Pharisees wanted to stop,

A temple full of greedy money makers,

A fig tree like Israel, that bore no fruit,

A friend would betray him to his death, with a kiss.

Friends would not even stay awake to pray for him as he cried to His father in the garden.

A closer friend would deny him 3 times, embarrassed to acknowledge him at all.

A city of men and women chanting for his death - ‘give us the terrorist Barabbas rather than Jesus’

Jesus, alone, rejected by everyone, scorned and mocked,

How he must have had to reach deep into his heart to trust the words of this Psalm

A close friend would betray him with

As he saw the mountains around the great city itself,

Psalm 121:1–2 NIV

I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

I expect this Psalm was used as a call of reassurance,

Someone would call out v1 and 2 and the whole worshipping community would respond with v3-8

He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

But Jesus had no-one to respond to him, to minister to his needs,

And perhaps from lifting his eyes to hills, searching for reassurance from the Lord,

When we feel like that,

perhaps we can find peace in knowing Jesus has been were you find yourself.

Reject by everyone, removed of all worth,

And perhaps like Jesus, we just have to remember the response ourselves,

Perhpas from lifting eyes to the hill, we now close them

and trust that the Lord Jesus himself is promising you these verse from the Father’s side,

Psalm 121:5–8 NIV

The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Betrayal, rejection even death may at the door,

but you are safe in the Father’s arms both now and for evermore.

He is watching over you - it’s repeated 6 times in these 8 verses.
