Good morning, I hope you are doing well. This morning, we will begin with the verse of Scripture that has inspired this idea of looking at one verse of Scripture per day in hopes of becoming more like Christ.
This video is not to be the only Bible Study that you do during the course of the day, but my prayer that it is a helpful supplement to the Bible study you are already doing. My hope is that you will take this explanation and verse of Scripture and launch into the broader context of the verse of Scripture that we discuss.
Now to begin.
The verse of Scripture we will be discussing this morning is . Like I said, this verse has inspired this initiative of taking one verse a day and working through it with you all.
So lets begin by just reading the verse.
Jesus is praying and in the middle of a prayer that has already lasted for 16 verses, he prays:
“Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
The first word in this verse is sanctify.
Sanctify means to make holy, to dedicate, to consecrate, to separate, to be set apart for God.
Jesus here is speaking to the Father, where he uses the imperative which is a command. It is important to note here that Jesus is not making a command to the Father that would be foreign to the Father’s purposes. Rather, what Jesus is doing is simply reflecting the Father’s heart for the disciples here in this passage. He desires that they be set apart, separate, holy for God’s use. Holy is the attribute and an adjective of God, and that which he will use must be holy and reflect his character as well.
Now, I just made mention of the them here in this passage.
In the immediate context of , Jesus is referring to the eleven disciples. The 12 minus Judas, but this sanctification is not limited only to the eleven disciples, but Jesus goes on to say in verse 20 on chapter 17.
“I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word;
This desire of sanctification (being made holy) is a desire that reflects both the Father and the Son’s heart for believers or disciples across the ages.
Next we find the words “in the truth”
This phrase is referencing the means by which the Father will sanctify the disciples and believers across the ages.
He will do this through the truth. He goes on to define what this truth is. The last four words here are “Your word is truth.” So we are not left to wonder what the truth is.
We are to be sanctified by the truth of every Word that God has given to us in The Bible. We believe that is where God reveals. We also believe this is the means by which the Spirit of God convicts, confronts, and conforms us to the image of Christ.
DA Carson says this:
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Gospel according to John c. Jesus Prays that His Disciples May Be Sanctified (17:17–19)
The Father will immerse Jesus’ followers in the revelation of himself in his Son; he will sanctify them by sending the Paraclete to guide them into all truth
Are you reading the truth daily? Are you committing your life to the truth, and being sanctified by the Holy Spirit through it?
