Before we start I’d like you to think about you for just a minute. What grade were you in when you were 10 years old? What were you like when you were 10 years old? What is one piece of advice you would give to the 10 year old you?
Army – “Be all that you can be.” Boy Scouts – “Be Prepared.” Someone once said – “Wherever you are, be all there.” Another person once said, “Be alert. We need more lerts.” “If I weren’t an SFA Lumberjack, I’d be... ashamed.” Asked a little kid, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” "A grown-up”.
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Treasure in a Field
Was the man walking through the field, going from one place to another? Working the field for an employer? Already considering the purchase of the field for himself and family?
Whatever the reason, he stumbles across the treasure hidden there. Sometimes we are just carrying on with life and stumble across something amazing. Dont waste those opportunities. The idea that it was a treasure lets us know that it was worth more than the cost of the field. His willingness to sell all that he owned tells us the same.
Can you imagine the conversation with his wife when he puts the for sale sign up? When she sees that he is unloading the couch and the microwave and doing a complete closet cleanout and posting it all on FB marketplace craigslist?
And the pursuit of that treasure created JOY in him. This is where the analogy is so valuable. Because Jesus is pointing the people who are listening to Him that day to Himself! He is the treasure worth pursuing. Because He is ultimately for our good. Because He is eternal. Because He has gone to prepare a place for us.
Treasure that lasts forever
One of the things your graduation will do to your parents is make them realize they are getting older. It will put an exclamation point to the finality of life. This existence is temporary.
But there is an eternity prepared for all mankind. We are all eternal beings.

Wisdom says to invest in things that last. If you buy an item, but the best quality you can afford. It will last longer. AAMOF save up another month or two so you can afford the best.
The older (wiser) you get the better able you are to process this information. That’s why I think your advice to the 10 year old you is valuable. You are older and wiser than they were. Your experiences have made you better. I hope.
So my charge to you; my challenge is to live for things that matter. Things that last. Live for the eternal. When you live for Jesus you have all those.
Dont be stupid. Maybe ignorant is the better word here.
