Finishing up Becoming One next week
Renewing our vows. Come ready to recommit to your spouse!
Tonights is week 3 of “Who is the Holy Spirit.”
INTRO:
We have had some amazing weeks discussing how your marriage can become one like Christ desires.
And we have also learned how we can become one in our relationship with Christ.
Last week we talked about the process of becoming one.
This week, our sermon title is, “The Key”
Grab your Bibles and turn with me to Ephesians 5:21
PRAYER
SERMON
Ephesians 5:21 NIV
21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

The key to a Husband and Wife becoming one is… to submit to one another!

Not because the other deserves it…
But because of your reverence (respect, fear, and love) for Christ!
It’s when you are voluntarily submitting to each another that you will begin to merge into one.
Let’s be clear about something...
Submit does not mean to be a slave to the other.
I believe Galatians 5:13-15 will help us to better understand what it means to submit to one another.
Galatians 5:13–15 NIV
13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
Submitting to one another means:
Choosing to not defend for your rights and wants.
You may have every right to do something or say something… Submitting is choosing to not giving in to the desires of the flesh.
Serving one another.
Humbly… I love that this word is here for serving. (Not thinking you are above that act of service)
In Love…
According to Verse 15;
Choosing to not submit to one another in your marriage will cause you to start biting and devouring each other… And eventually destroying one another and your marriage!
That is why Submission is the key to becoming one!
Naturally none of us want to do that. But it is essential!
This isn’t just for Husbands and Wives to become one…

Submitting to one another is also necessary for the body of Christ to become one.

1 Peter 5:5
1 Peter 5:5 NIV
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
Don’t get caught up with the younger submitting to the older… It then says… All of you…
Each one of us need to learn to submit to one another, serving one another with humility and love!
God blesses those who humble themselves and serve one another.
Don’t look down on others… Even the younger believers…
Don’t look down on the older as if they have nothing to offer to you!
In fact… we all need one another. And we must submit and serve each other with humility and love!
Let’s go back to Ephesians 5:21-31
While we are on this subject of Submitting to one another in our marriages.
I want to clarify some misunderstandings of this passage.
Ephesians 5:21–31 NIV
21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
Because of verse 21… We can understand that verse 22 must fall in alignment with it.
Submitting isn’t for the wives only… Verse 21 says all of us must submit to one another.
So why is this here?
Same as why verse 25 says for Husbands to love their wives…
The Word of God tells us to all love one another… It’s not just the jobs of the Husband.

As husband and wife… both are called to submit to one another and choose to love one another!

So why is Paul focusing on these separately...
Because he was speaking directly to the culture of that time!
Verses 22 - 30 Speaks directly to the culture of that time!
Women: Newly Freed in Christ found submission difficult to their husbands (especially unsaved husbands)
1 Peter 3:1
1 Peter 3:1 NIV
1 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,
Men: The Roman culture of that time, gave men the unlimited power over their wives and children.
And they were not used to treating their wives with sacrificial respect and love.
So Paul was addressing the culture and issues that were in the church at that time about marriages struggling to submit to one another.
And so this morning I feel led to also speak to today’s culture… and what I believe are some areas that are preventing Husbands and wives from submitting to one another and becoming one.

What Paul would say to us today about submitting to one another:

Women: Encourage and Speak well of your Husband. Believe in Him!
Todays Culture: Degrades the value of men as husbands and fathers.
Just look at most TV shows, Movies, and Books. These are the influencers of our culture.
Don’t buy into it. Your Husband is an amazing man. You did not make a mistake choosing to marry them. You believed in them then… Believe in them now.
Encourage them! Publicly only speak well of your husband.
There are enough negative voices in his ear. Let Him hear your sweet voice believing in Him.
Remember… Christ has made him and is doing a good work in him.
God has great plans for him. Declare those over your husband.
Now to the Men:
Men: Stand up and Lead your Family as the Spiritual Leader of your home!
Today’s Culture: Has men not involved in religious and spiritual things. They have more important things to do.
Men there is nothing more important than you leading your family in a pursuit to Christ!
Just as Christ did not chase after things of this World… but instead led His Creation into a relationship with the Father!
He got up early to pray… Stayed up all night to pray… He taught the things of God each day… He corrected, healed, loved, and served.
All so that we might all be saved.
Men… You have the responsibility to be like Christ is to the Church. Lead your spouse and your family in pursing Christ!
Pray more… Read the Word more… Worship more…
Let’s humble ourselves and choose to love… by:
SUBMIT ONE TO ANOTHER!
