Chapter 1

16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
Grace upon Grace or Fullness of Grace. Or Grace in place of grace. Contrast grace with what the law of Moses could do
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.

19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

He was tesitifying on the behalf Jesus because in legal proceedings you needed the mouth of two or three witnesses
He was making the path straight. This was like envoys who came before king
The lowly task of unloosing sandals was seen as so low disciples were not asked to do it. It was a rabbinic expression of a most degrading task
John’s baptisim was for repetence. This was to prepare the hearts of the people for the kingdom of God
Gentiles were baptized as a symbol that they turned from paganism to judaism
It was to ensure they were ritually pure
John’s baptism is reflected in Malachi 3:1-5

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

The Christian believe today
Jesus Baptism is a pattern for believers to follow it doesn’t mean saving but association
The Holy Spirit coming down was empowering much like the second work of Grace “Baptism in the Holy Spirit” it is after this his ministry begins
This also is a scene in which we have a Levite priest baptizing a Judahite priest. From Aaron to Melchizedek “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleaseed” was the priestly blessing of transfer
Priestt had to be washed then anointed with oil and had to be 30 years of age. Then was a presitly blessing and transference. Jesus was washed and then anointed by the oil of the Holy Spirit and he was 30.
