Whom Will You Serve?
Subject: Who will the Israelites serve?
Compliment: They will serve God.
Idea: The Israelites will serve God.
Homiletical Idea: We serve because it's our worship to God.
Further Questions: Why were the Israelites asked that question by Joshua?
Other: I need to word studies on serve (I already did some work), and fear. The issue with Maslov's basic needs.
A. A parent or friend serving you.
B. Secular charities, such as the Peace Corp, and Christian charities serve people.
C. Read the text:
i. 14 “Now then,” Joshua continued, “honour the Lord and serve him sincerely and faithfully. Get rid of the gods which your ancestors used to worship in Mesopotamia and in Egypt, and serve only the Lord. 15If you are not willing to serve him, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your ancestors worshipped in Mesopotamia or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are now living. As for my family and me, we will serve the Lord.”
D. As Christians we need to live to serve the Lord. In this sermon I would like to answer the three questions: What is the definition of the word serve?
II. Who did the Israelites decide to serve? And how do we serve the Lord?
A. What is the definition?
i. Serving is worship, cf. word study.
ii. Serving is out of sincerity, out of love, for non profit. It has no motive for selfish gain.

B. Who did the Israelites decide to serve?
i. They decided to serve God.
ii. Why did Joshua ask the questions?
C. How do we Serve the Lord
i. We serve with fear. Fear refers to respect, honor, and to stand in awe.
1. People that fear God observe the Law
ii. We serve with faithfulness.
