Homiletical Idea:  We will take a look at three words that are in reference to speaking: teacher, boast, and tongue.
We will take a look at three words that are in reference to speaking: teacher, boast, and tongue.
Notes: Craig Hall told the story about how there were tense e-mails between collegues, (soilder to non-soilder and vise versa) and it created tension because of the negativity that was going around, so a military leader told the soilders to write their colleuges the same way they write to their mother. Other: It would be good to add some ways to develop habits in helping people become more encouraging. Other issues can be gossip, and idle talk (see Kempis' "Idle Talk" from Imitations of Christ

Today’s Focus

We will take a look at three words that are in reference to speaking: teacher, boast, and tongue.
Outline of the Lesson:
I. put Greek word here - teacher
A. The noun is mentioned 59 times in the New Testament.
B. Epoticus wanted to be called a teacher. Socrates didn't. It held too much of a high standard.
C.In the Biblical, it is referred to a Jewish rabbi or an elder of the Christian church.
D. A major reason for its high standards is because words affect people. If the scripture is taught incorrectly, it can strongly damage a person world view.
E. Teaching children should to be taken seriously, and possible even more than teaching adults.

A. James telling his audience not to be self righteous. They are to only boast for the Lord, and not in a boast in a bragging manner.
B. The Pharisees were chastised by the Lord for praying in boastful way, and living self-righteous lifestyles.
III. put Greek word here - tongue
A. This word is used either in reference to the body part or for speaking of tongues.
B. Speech therapists explain that tongue placement is what cause people to speak. When helping students with speech impediments, they help them learn how to put their tongues in the right placement.
C. The tongue and uplift or destroy.
D. Language provides power.
