E. Context
II. BODY
A. The Spiritual gift word of wisdom
a. This gift is the supernatural insight by the Holy Spirit into the nature of God’s plan
1 Corinthians 2:6–7 ESV
6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 7 But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.
1. literally the word wisdom here means insight in2 the true nature o things
2. Notice its a WORD of wisdom, not the gift of wisdom
2 the true nature o things2. Notice, again its a WORD of wisdom, not the gift of wisdomi. God has a plan & knows every single detail o that planii. Some times he gives us a part o that insight in2 his planb. Samuel recieved a word of wisdom
i. God has a plan & knows every single detail o that plan
ii. Some times he gives us a part o that insight in2 his plan
b. Samuel recieved a word of wisdom (have u heard o Saul, 1st king o Isr.)
1 Sam 9:16
1 Samuel 9:16 ESV
16 “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people, because their cry has come to me.”
1. The word of knowledge was the details of Saul’s arrival
ESV16 “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people, because their cry has come to me.”
2. The word of wisdom was
i. that God told Samuel what His plan was for this man frm Benjamin &
1. Notice God told Samuel what His plan was for this man from Benjamin & what Sam was 2 do about iti. You’ll anoint him to be prince (that’s a new thing 4 Isr, btw) ii. He will rescue God’s peoplec. Ananias recieved a word of wisdom
ii. what Sam was 2 do about it
-You’ll anoint him to be prince (that’s a new thing 4 Isr, btw)
-He will rescue God’s people
c. Ananias recieved a word of wisdom (have u heard o Ananias)
ESV12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.”
Acts 9:12 ESV
12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.”
Acts 9:11–12 ESV
11 And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.”
1. The word o knowledge was the facts about another man named Saul
2. Then, in God describing the word of knowledge he gave 2 Paul, HE showed Ananias God’s plan: Ananias would heal Paul (that’s wisdom)
1. in God describing the word of knowledge he gave 2 Paul, HE showed Ananias God’s plan: Ananias would heal Paul (that’s wisdom)2. then, after some protest frm Ananias God further shows his plan
3. then, after some protest frm Ananias (Do u know who this guy is??) God further shows his plan
Acts 9:15–16 ESV
15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”
ESV15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”
ESV15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”
i. Paul would become an apostle to the gentiles & their leaders & suffer while doing it
ii. Ananias was chosen 2b God’s partner 4 the healing & commissioning o Paul
-but Ananias needed the spiritual gifts of a word of knowledge/wisdom 2 get the “ball rolling”
B. The word of wisdom can be conditional
a. Jonah recieved a conditional word of wisdom (Tell the story)
Jonah 3:2–4 ESV
2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth. 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
1. This word of wisdom was dependent on their response to the word given
Jonah 3:10 ESV
10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
i. The Ninevites repented & so they were spared.
C. the spiritual gifts word of knowledge & word of wisdom often operate together
a. In the instances o Samuel & Ananias, they were given specific facts in the mind o God
1. Then God gave 'em ea. specific insight in2 HIS plan & what they were 2 do about the supernatural facts given
b. I was at a revival service in Branson
1. Mario Marrilo was the Evangelist there
2. God began 2 show him specific folks w/specific issues that they were suffering frm (Word o Knowledge)
3. Then God showed Mario God’s plan…healing ((Word o wisdom)
D. these 2 gifts are relational
a. God stepped in2 Jonah, Samuel & Ananias’ circumstance & spoke 2 them w/ the gift o a word o knowledge/wisdom
1. God didn’t just place the knowledge/wisdom in2 their brains
2. God stepped in2 their circumstances & especially regarding Ananias, allowed him 2 engage in conversation
i. That means, 4 God 2 empower us w/ these spiritual gifts, we r going 2 need 2 stay connected 2 God relationally
-Remember what Jesus said in...
ESV5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5 ESV
5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
E. These gifts are missional
a. In each circumstance God had a plan
1. God planned to give Isr. the king they desired.
i. So God by providence set up a meeting btwn Samuel & the soon 2b King
i. To carry out the plan God partnered w/Ananias starting w/ the gift o a word o knowledge & wisdom
2. Paul (formerly Saul) needed healing & commissioning
i. To carry out the plan God partnered w/Ananias starting w/ the gift o a word o knowledge & wisdom
i. So God by providence set up a meeting btwn Samuel & the soon 2b King
3. God planned 2 either destroy / have mercy on Nineveh, depending on their reaction 2 God’s msg
i. So, God provided a msngr, giving the Ninevites opportunity 2 repent
b. God is still carrying out the plan o God’s Kingdom coming & HIS will being done
1. r we on board w/that plan?
i. If so, God WANTS 2 empower us!
i. is it because we want 2 be accepted & if we don’t rec. we feel rejected?
-that might b covetousness
ii. R we looking 2 b the spiritual elite?
-R we chasing the Spiritual high found in God’s presence & outpouring o the gifts?
*If our answer is yes 2 any o these ?’s we cannot expect 2 rec.
iii. Is it because we wanna c God’s mission fulfilled, but feel pwrless 2 help?
iv. Is it because everywhere we look we c broken people on a highway 2 hell & can’t find, don’t care about, / pwrless 2 take the off ramp provided by Jesus’ death & resurrection
-U c this & want folks 2 b set free by Jesus…but r missing the pwr provided by God’s spirit
*If u answer yes 2 these questions…The answer God provides is remain in Jesus…He’ll baptize u w/ the H.S. & the Spirit gives us gifts 2 help him build God’s Kingdom here.
F. These gifts happened outside a church service
a. Samuel was going about his normal day When God spoke 2 him
b. Ananias seemed 2 also be experiencing “just another day” when God spoke 2 him in a vision
1. Not that these gifts can’t/don’t happen in a church service...
2. but it seems that the vast majority o the time in Acts the gifts were active in the lives o people who were daily in rel. w/ God.
i. & NOT sunday christians
c. Also, who were the gifts o word o knowledge/wisdom 4
1. not 4 Ananias / Sam, but 4 Saul & Paul respectively
2. These gifts aren’t 4 our own gain, but 2 fulfill the mission o God!
