2pe 3:15-19
2 Peter 3:15–18 ESV
15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
John 1:14–18 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

Grace- special gifting for empowerment
Truth- firm, binding reality
** both together
** together in contrast to the law / Moses
2 Timothy 3:14–17 ESV
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Truth- It’s by SCR that we are made competent and complete for what our life is all about
** need truth
** need it in living
*** INteresting how Jessus was this for us ()
Life grows more perfect as we are perfected
Finding better answers leads to better living
** Power of truth
1- reliability of its truth / source
eternal, comprehensive, accurate, penetrating
2- usefulness of its message (profit)
establish what is the truth we need to practice
arrest our misdirections
establish a better direction
train in steps of progress
3- benefit of living it
*** Implication—meant to be brought into life (4 things here)
it defiens our realities (example) (Cf Grace and truth vs law)
it tests our thinking (test everything…, Bereans more noble…)
it reveals our inner workings (Word active and alove)
it governs our decisions (??) (we can’t gain righteousness living the law, but we can live the right life that God has given us)
*** The issue is that we don’t simply teach SCR, we look for where it touches life—we find teh question your life is asking and then we care when we get the answer
***((what’s the question / issue here?) (how can I truly know what’s true and what’s the right way to do things??
**** Ultimately, we will one day finish this world—judgment, and maybe more, got it right—competing systems—who should love whom, how should money and business work, where is right place to draw line sexually, do I kill to protect my stuff, is it take or be taken, etc.
*** How do I know what to believe and how to live (not just how do I live, but how do I know how to live)
(I want before and after—I don’t have an endless number of lives to experiment with—I’m 50, and I don’t have all the answers, and I’m running out of time to learn—kids are moving out, I need to get this right; married 25 years, I don’t think the next 25 will be as good if I don’t get a few more things better; health not what was, I want to know what I can have and have it…, [mission / purpose], pray [how, for what]—miracles possible, how
Inspiration—possible to really get it right (so much failure even still—and yet, still so much hope—re: kids’ future, re: last days, re: national restoration, re: strength and health of whole life
*** Before and after stories
*** Wrights and measurements / standards and measurements
*** NASA mistake re: wrong measurement system
*** Here—two promises--
made complete—exactly like meant to be—not making up for some deficiencies
entirely equipped for whatever I need to do—don’t show up for some situation w/ family or challenging persin or life--”I have no idea how to handle this)
not defective
not inept (Don Rickles)
