Effective Word
Effective Word
Successful in producing a desired or intended result. Don’t we all want to be effective? But what if being effective comes with a cost? The church at Thessalonica had a cost upon them and today we are looking at the effective word and the cost of receiving it.

Effective word was displayed in the character of the church (1The1:3-10)
Work of Faith, labor of love, steadfastness of hope
Effective word came upon effective preaching, love of the ministry to them (1The2:1-12)
Previously mistreated, imprisoned, in Philippi they came there amid much opposition (2:2)
They came as a nursing mother, an exhorting father, and a working brother to them
Effective word only comes from a willingness to receive it and that is where we are today (1The2:13)
Effective word does not always have a positive effect on people and we are looking at that today too (1The2:14-16)

The effectiveness of God’s Word for those who believe is astounding and encouraging. May we know it so that we may be effective too and not impacted by the negative belief of the world.
13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.
The church received it as it was, the Word of God and by faith knew it would perform its work (be effective) to those who believed. So here is some results of the effectiveness of God’s word.

It produces faith (Rom10:17; Jn20:30-31)
It is powerful, able to save (Rom1:16-17; Jm1:21)

Authoritative and living
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Alive, sharp, active, piercing, about to discern (judge) intentions of heart.
63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
For the words that Christ spoke are spirit and life to those who believe and receive.

Speaking of belief, where does it come from? The Word
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
And the intended result is given in John.
30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
belief so may have eternal life in His name!
It is living, powerful and able to discern (Heb4:12; Jn6:63)
It produces faith (Rom10:17; Jn20:30-31)
It is powerful, able to save (Rom1:16-17; Jm1:21)
Belief brings faith, faith brings salvation. All by the effective Word.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”
The word, the implanted word that is received is able to save.
21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

18 In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.
22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, 23 for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.
And one more from Jesus mouth to Nicodemus ears to our eyes.
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?”
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

1 Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, 2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 3 if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.

14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
overcome the evil one, evil desires, evil things just as Jesus did in the wilderness, and how did He overcome them. By the effective, enduring Word!

17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
Sanctify the apostles, the word can sanctify us, our hearts so we may share our hearts with others, here is another verse, a freebee not on your outline
15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
Sanctify by Christ, by the Words of Christ, by the words of the Apostles, so you can make a defence, or give an account of the hope that is in you!
For the word to be effective it must be received properly so want to spend a few minutes on that.

Just because something is given does not assure that it is received.. For the word to be effective it must be received with some conditions, so to speak. Here are some things to consider regarding receipt of the effective word.

The Word must be received by faith (1The2:13; Heb11:6)
Received by faith with promise and purpose (Rom1:17); no profit if not by faith (Heb4:2)
Must be received by meekness (Jm1:21); for there is a willingness (Ps25:9)
Must be received, ready for application (Jm1:22-25); this assures purified souls (1Pt1:22)
Must be fervently desired (1Pt2:2; Ps1:1-3)
It must abide in us (1Jn2:14) if not then we sin against God (Ps119:11)

The Word must be received by faith (1The2:13; Heb11:6)
For it is Word that work in those who believe
13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.
Another good verse we need to consdier
6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
Now bringing us to the next point.
It must be received by faith (1The2:13; Heb11:6)
Received by faith with promise and purpose (Rom1:17); no profit if not by faith (Heb4:2)
Here is the promise
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”
Righteousness revealed due to faith, faith that comes by the word (Rom10:17)
But, there is no profit to those who do not believe, do not have faith
2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.
It must be received by faith (1The2:13; Heb11:6)
Received by faith with promise and purpose (Rom1:17); no profit if not by faith (Heb4:2)
Must be received by meekness (Jm1:21); for there is a willingness (Ps25:9)
21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.
Another word for meekness is humility; by humility, by faith receive the implanted word. Do so ad He will lead you!
9 He leads the humble in justice, And He teaches the humble His way.
Must be received, ready for application (Jm1:22-25); this assures purified souls (1Pt1:22)
We need, must receive and be ready to apply or risk deluding yourself
22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;
24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
And I think I may have used this one before but it fits here too. Be receiving and obeying the Word that purifies our souls

1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
Fervently desired like a newborn baby for a mothers milk
2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,
Must be received, ready for application (Jm1:22-25); this assures purified souls (1Pt1:22)
Must be fervently desired (1Pt2:2; Ps1:1-3)
It must abide in us (1Jn2:14) if not then we sin against God (Ps119:11)
Implant the word and it will abide in you.
14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
in it we have victory as mentioned earlier. Don’t put it in you and you leave yourself open for sin, to sin against God
11 Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
I still have a little more to cover today but to sum this section up.
The effective implanted word is authoritative, living and powerful, faith producing, causing to be born again and then spiritual growth, regardless of Satan’s attempts to get you, and regardless of your age.
Be sure to receive the word by faith with meekness, fully aware that it is to be applied, may it abide in us and us in it!
whew, that is a lot of information, basically with only 1 verse as the starting point, so now for the rest.
14 For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews, 15 who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out. They are not pleasing to God, but hostile to all men,
16 hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved; with the result that they always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the utmost.

Jesus told us to count the cost of being a disciple (Lk14:25-33) the church of Thessalonica enduring suffering for the cause of Christ. There are the sins of the Jews here in this passage we need to look at too.
14 For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews, 15 who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out. They are not pleasing to God, but hostile to all men,
16 hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved; with the result that they always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the utmost.
To the church of Thessalonica Christian faith did not bring them peace, it brought trouble (suffering). They took the suffering as a badge of honor and we already know some of the results back from 1The1:8-10
8 For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything. 9 For they themselves report about us what kind of a reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God,
10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come.
Having said that now, there are some things we can learn about the troublemakers from (vv.15-16) and I will give some thoughts too along the way before we close.
Troublemakers trouble
They are identified (v.15) - their own countrymen, from the Jews
They are killers (v.15) - killing Jesus and the prophets
Eventhough Jesus and the prophets were killed, it did not stop the message, just the messenger and God brought others to carry the message.
Man may refuse the message, but it cannot eliminate the message or the truth of the message for it will not return void (see Isa55:11)
They persecuted Christians (v.15)
They did not please God, or even attempt to (v.15)
Man too often has relied on man made religion vs. God given relationship. Trading the word of God for the traditions of man
They were hostile and against all men (vv.15-16)
Jews were thought of at times of hating all mankind except for other Jews.
They regarded being God’s chosen people a privilege vs what is was to be a service to bring Messiah and to be an example.
They were trying to be exclusive, keeping everything to themselves (v.16)
God’s grand plan was more than for the Jews, it was for all and that included the Gentiles and the persecutors, murders, non God pleasing, hostile men were trying to be exclusive and keep things to the Jews only.
There is fundamentally something wrong with religion that shuts men off, keeps men out. We are to love one another because of the love of God that is in us. May the effective word get its results in us as believers!
