The Hidden Heart

This story was told to me by a friend of mine at the University of California at Berkeley.  He was walking with a friend of his in downtown Berkeley one afternoon.  The friend was discussing a very complex subject and without thinking he stepped off the curb almost into the path of an oncoming truck.  The truck driver stuck his head out the window and yelled, “Look where you’re going, STUPID!”  I wonder what that truck driver would have thought if he had known that he had just yelled, “Stupid!” at Doctor Albert Einstein.

Often when we see others acting in ways that seem peculiar to us we make harsh judgments about them.  “Mrs. Smith went to sleep in church this morning.  It looks like she could at least stay awake through the sermon.”  “Mr. Jones passed me in the hall and didn’t even speak.  He sure is a grouch.” (What I didn’t know was that Mrs. Smith had been up all night with a sick child and Mr. Jones lost his job last week).
