1. Let us Draw near: We Need to Approach God (vs. 19-22)

Question: How are we to approach God?

A. Approach God Freely (vs. 19-21)

version 1From the time shortly after the exodus from Egypt, God’s presence on earth was symbolized by the Ark of the Covenant. It was shrouded from view, first in the tabernacle and later in the temple in Jerusalem. Only one person, the high priest, was allowed in its presence, and that was just once a year on the Day of Atonement when he took the blood of the sacrifice to the Mercy Seat. There was a thick veil some thirty feet high that hid the Holy of Holies in the Temple. But on the day Jesus died, it was ripped apart, not by human hands, but instead from the top to the bottom and the way to God was opened to us. “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;” ()We have such an amazing privilege of access to God. The way has been opened once and for all. And yet too often we act as if there is still a barrier preventing us from coming into His presence. The reality of the torn veil does not benefit many Christians because they do not live as if it were true. Prayer is not just for emergencies, and fellowship with God is not just for Sundays. There is a real and living God who has invited us to come before Him. And though all Heaven and earth bow before Him, we get to call Him our Father.version 2We have Access to GodNow we read these words and maybe you read these words and your familiar with these concepts of drawing nearer to God. But this idea written to this audience, an audience that had a background in the ceremonial law, this sounds a bit different because the normal man doesnt just draw near to enter into the presence of God as according to the Mosaic custom. You just dont do that. So this command to draw near, how can this be said? How can this be possible? Well vs. 19 clues us in
KJV 1900Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
So we can draw near by the blood of Jesus.
KJV 1900By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
so here is a reference to the veil. Here is a picutre of the temple how it looked around the time of Jesus. In the temple there are all these divsions built up. Theres an outer court, an inner court, theres places where if you have this disease you are not suppose to cross this line. Theres the court of the Gentiles and so theres all the restrictions built up. But if you were to go throught those middle doors and enter the temple building itself. You would enter a room called the Holy Place. In the Holy Place there is the Table of Shewbread, the Golden Candle sticks, the ceilings would be about 60 ft tall, but as you walk through thtat door as you enter the Holy Place, if you looked forward you would see this large veil almost like a theater curtain. from the ceiling to the floor. But this veil was important because on the otherside of that veil was a room called the Holies of Holies. In this room you have the ark of the covenant, the thing that was in indiana Jones, you have the presene of God residing int here as well. But the special thing aobut this room was taht not everyone could enter into that room. In fact only one person could enter and only one time a year. ONce a year the high priest would enter this special room on the day of atonemt, to make a sacrifice. This high priest, once a year, he could draw near. Thats why when we come to this passage and we are given this admonishin to draw near it would make the Jews, who this book was written primarly to, would make them ask the question how can i draw near to God. Im not a high priest. I cannot enter the Holy of Holies. How can this be possible. Its possible because that veil we looked at just a moment ago was torn
KJV 1900Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
This veil was torn, and its intereseting to note that it torn from top to bottom. This showed that it was an act of God because this is not something a man could do. Because the viel was torn, and the authro of Hebrews jsut tells us here, that that veil being the very body of Christ was torn. We can enter because of the blood of Jesus Christ. And so what does this mean? It means this, In Jesus, we have access to God! ONly in Jesus in Jesus Alone. OUr good works come cannot bring us to God, our best intetions cannot bring us to God. Today we are going to be talking about how we as a church wnat to inspire people to Grow Togehter, but a church doesnt bring you to God, only a personal relationship with God only through Jesus Christ. and So in Jesus we have access to God. But in Jesus we alos have boldness as well. We have Boldness
KJV 1900Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
So in Jesus We have access, but also because of Jesus we have boldness
KJV 1900According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
Boldness and access, I mean thats what we are talking about. We can go to God because of Jesus. We can go to God with Boldness because of Jesus.
KJV 1900Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
