Idiot, the (from the Gk. ἰδιώτης, a private person, one of no special skill), the pseudonym used by a medieval spiritual writer generally identified as Raymundus Jordanus, a French Canon Regular of St Augustine and Abbot of Selles-sur-Cher, who flourished c. 1381. A collected edition of his devotional works in Latin, which were very popular in the Middle Ages, was published in 1654 by Théophile Raynaud, SJ, who first made the identification. The word ‘idiot’ long retained its original meaning in English; in 1657 some writings of Dame Gertrude *More, OSB (1606–33) were pub. at Paris under the title ‘The Holy Practices of a Divine Lover, or, the Sainctly Idiots Devotions’.
