Our Savior Is Supreme!
The Gospel of John
John 7:14-24
Sermon by Rick Crandall
Grayson Baptist Church - November 16, 2016
(Revised August 20, 2019)
*Tonight in John 7:14-24 we will focus on the supremacy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
And our Savior Is Supreme!
This sure truth shows up all over the New Testament.
We can see it in Scriptures like John 5:24-27, where Jesus said:
24.
"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
25.
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
26.
For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,
27. and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man."
*Our Savior is Supreme!
Colossians 1:15-20 says this about Jesus:
15.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
16.
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
17.
And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
18.
And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
19.
For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,
20. and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
*In 1 Timothy 6:13-16, Paul wrote these words to Timothy:
13.
I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate,
14. that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ's appearing,
15. which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
16. who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power.
Amen.
*Then in Revelation 19:11-16, the Apostle John gave this testimony about Jesus:
11.
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse.
And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.
12. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns.
He had a name written that no one knew except Himself.
13.
He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
14.
And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.
15.
Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations.
And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron.
He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
16.
And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
*Our Savior is Supreme!
And there are many other examples in Scripture.
Actually, there are many more examples than I ever realized before, because the main original word for "Lord" in the New Testament means "the one who is supreme in authority."
This word is found almost 750 times in the New Testament, and the vast majority of those times it's referring directly to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
*Every time someone called Jesus "Lord" in the New Testament, they were saying, "Jesus, You are supreme!"
And we may not realize it, but every time we call Jesus "Lord" we are saying, "Jesus you are supreme!"
*Our Savior is supreme!
And this Scripture helps us see why.
1. FIRST, HE HAS UNLIMITED UNDERSTANDING.
*By every measure, from every angle, Jesus Christ has wisdom and understanding that far surpasses our own.
He is infinite in His wisdom and knowledge.
We can see this truth in vs. 14-17:
14.
Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
15.
And the Jews marveled, saying, "How does this Man know letters, having never studied?''
16.
Jesus answered them and said, "My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.
17.
If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.
*The Pharisees couldn't stand it in vs. 15.
Jesus knew more than they did!
They couldn't stand it, and they couldn't understand it, because Jesus had never been to their higher schools of learning.
*But Jesus knew the Word of God, because He wrote it!
It was His Holy Spirit Who moved the prophets of old to write what they did.
And notice that everything the Lord taught ultimately came from His Heavenly Father.
That's why in vs. 16, Jesus answered them and said, "My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me."
*You see, there is a paradox between the Lord's humanity and divinity.
When Christ humbled Himself to be born as a little baby, He had to learn the same kind of things we learned.
Jesus had to be potty trained.
He had to learn how to walk and talk and read.
He was fully man.
But at the same time, Jesus was fully God, as He always has been and always will be.
*Yes, Jesus became a man, but He never stopped being God!
So when it came to the things of God, the Lord always had unlimited understanding!
Jesus never had to learn the things of God, because He always knew them to the fullest.
That's why Jesus knew so much as a 12-year-old when He went to the Temple with His parents.
*Luke 2:40-50 tells the story:
40.
And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.
41.
His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.
42.
And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.
43.
When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem.
And Joseph and His mother did not know it;
44.
but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day's journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances.
45.
So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him.
46.
Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.
47.
AND ALL WHO HEARD HIM WERE ASTONISHED AT HIS UNDERSTANDING AND ANSWERS.
48.
So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, "Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.''
49.
And He said to them, "Why is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?''
50.
But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.
*Psalm 22 was written a thousand years before Jesus was born, and it prophesied in detail about the cross.
But this Psalm also prophetically takes us back to the time when Jesus was a baby.
*And in Psalm 22:9-10, we hear these words the Lord spoke to His Heavenly Father:
9.
But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust when I was on My mother's breasts.
10.
I was cast upon You from birth.
From My mother's womb You have been My God.
*No other baby could have ever said that!
But Jesus could, because He was always God, even when He became a man.
Jesus has always known the Heavenly Father.
And their relationship is so close that every doctrine the Lord taught came straight from the Heavenly Father.
*Jesus has always known the Heavenly Father.
And until the Lord's death on the cross, there was never a moment's separation between the two.
But that was for our sake.
*Those Jewish rulers knew a lot about God's Word from an intellectual point of view.
