1 Corinthians 1:10-17

October 28, 2001

Intro: Our families can feel like the center of love, OR the source of

          all anger, bitterness, and fighting.

A-  The lady who said the two boy’s were starting to act like brothers.

1-   James tells us where the source for all quarrels comes from.

James 4:1-2, Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. (Seek life according to His will).

a-   A lack of humility drives us to a division between our spirit and the Holy Spirit AND between each other.

John 17:11, “Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.

John 17:21-23,  “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.22 “And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:23 “I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

John MacArthur: What the Lord laments and opposes, Satan applauds and fosters.

Turn to Jude 16-22

2-   What is the result of unity:

Acts 2:46-47,  So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

B-  The things that Paul shows us here is 4 things that will cause a church to be divided.

1-   4 Things that will tear a church apart.

a-   The idea is how a savage animal tears apart it’s prey.

1 Corinthians 1:10,  Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

#1- Allow doctrinal issues to fester

A-  It’s ok to question, It’s ok to not understand, It’s ok that doctrinal issues arise.

1-   It’s when they are allowed to fester that division is caused.

a-   What would be the context of fester here.

-         Reaching a point of frustration to continue to the point of drawing people to you or point of view.

·        - This is what the Pastor teaches  BUT I believe.

-         Making issues over non-issues.

-         Allowing non-biblical doctrine to exist and prevail in a body.

Switzerland jeopardized its renowned reputation for noncontroversy in August when it submitted for world-record consideration a cherry-spitting launch of 82 feet, allegedly beating the old record (held by American Rick "Pellet Gun" Krause of Arizona) of 74 feet. (Pellet Gun is married to the women's champion, Marlene "Machine Gun" Krause.) Switzerland's bid is controversial because it uses more-spitting-friendly pits, plus, in Switzerland, distance includes the two-foot follow-through area, whereas other world-record spits were measured from the point of release.

-         Problem: proper cherry-spitting doctrine is not being adhered to.

·        Result division amongst the cherry-spitter’s of the world.

Romans 16:17-18,  Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.

l- In verse 10 we see how doctrinal issues are to be dealt with.

“I plead with you” THE WHO

A-  An elder is to be involved in a hands on way.

1-   Plead (par-ak-al-eh’-o ) = exhort = I will come alongside to help.

a-   Ministry = serving Jesus through serving God’s children.

Acts 20:28, Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

“By the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”.  THE HOW.

A-  All we do is to be done by the name of OUR Lord Jesus Christ.

1-   Lord = He is the ruler of our lives

2-   Jesus = Biblical incarnation of God

3-   Christ = Messiah, the one who has always been there for us and always will O.T., Gospels, Church age.

a-   What does it mean to deal with something by the Name of our Lord.

-         In Him (prayer)

-         In His will (Holy Spirit)

-         In His word

1 Timothy 1:3,  As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

Acts 2:42,  And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

b-   Prayer is to be our plea,  The Holy Spirit our guide,  The Word of God our standard.

1 Corinthians 1:10,  Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you,  (THE WHY)

A-  So that there would be no divisions

1-   Division = Schismata = Schism (same word in Matthew)

Matthew 9:16,  “No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse.

2-   In the light of proper leadership, proper doctrine we would not cause tears in the body of Christ through

a-   Difference of opinions

b-   Difference of judgements

c-   Through useless arguments

2 Peter 1:20-21,  knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 133:1-3,  Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon,

Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing—Life forevermore.

Read Ephesians 4:1-6  (“well do you know what I think”)

1 Corinthians 1:10,  Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

l- What’s the result of WHO, HOW, WHY

A-  A body perfectly (maturely) joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

1-   Perfectly joined together = made complete = That which was broken is now fixed.

Romans 14:1-13 (Seek to fix)

2-   How is unity to be exhibited through the individual.

a-   We are to have the same mind = unity is an  internal reality.

Jeremiah 4:14-18

1 Corinthians 2:16,  For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Philippians 1:9,  And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment,

b-  We are to have same judgement

-         Disposition:  the tendency of something to act in a certain manner under given circumstances. (Don’t be a jerk)

·        Unity is an external reality

c-   To be of one mind and of one judgement means UNITY can not be forced and it can not be acted out.

Close in Acts 6:1-7 (Godly elders, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, unifying the body so that no tear exists, to that they perfectly joined together.)

Ephesians 4:1-3, I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
