1 Corinthians 14:1-19

November 17, 2002

Intro: In his presentation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and there

proper application the Apostle Paul inserted Chapter 13,

          almost, as a parenthetical statement.

A-  In Chapter 12 he talked about the various giftings of the Spirit.

1-   At the end of Chapter 12 he stated a problem he observed at the church of Corinth and introduced his solution.

1 Corinthians 12:31,  But earnestly (you) desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

B-  We found out that, that “more excellent way” is to exorcise the gifts given with a heart of love in order to reach out to others.

1-   To see others brought in to the throne room of the Lord through the way He has enabled you to do so.

a-   The problem is: instead of the gifts being used to attract attention of God they were used to attract attention to SELF.

-         The only gift intended to edify one’s self was being blown our of proportion in it’s use. (tongues)

·        It became the gift of choice

·        It was being used out of order

·        Everyone was coming together and speaking at once.

C-  Paul used the contrast of the gift of prophecy VS tongues.

1-   The gift with the best ability to edify VS the one with the least.

1 Corinthians 14:1, Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

Ø When seeking to minister to others, instead of earnestly desiring what you believe to be the best.

#1- Pursue (with a passion) LOVE

A-  Agape Love = sacrificial

1-   That which is contrary to your nature in the flesh

a-   That which is essential to you nature in the spirit.

-         “Contrary to the common man but unique to the Christian”.

b-   Concerning love which way would you have ministry.

-         Worship

·        talent or love

-         Teaching a child

·        Talent or love

-         Anything for God

·        Talent can make it happen

·        Love makes it effective.

#2- Desire Spiritual Gifts (the ability that comes from the Holy

      Spirit).

A-  Our 2 part prayer

1-   Lord how have you gifted me.

a-   How can I use the gift you’ve given me.

B-  To have love without a gifting to express it is useless.

1-   Our gifting needs to be how our love is shown.

a-   From love, giftings,  works,  and ministry should spring fourth.

#3- Especially that you should Prophecy.

A-  This literally means “to speak forth or to proclaim the will of God”.

Hebrews 1:1-2, God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;

1-   Remember the New Testament had yet to be written and Old Testaments were rare and expensive.

a-   When God wanted to speak to a church He did so through a Prophet based upon God’s word.

2 Peter 1:21,  for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

b-   Every author of the bible would be considered to have the gift of prophecy.

2-   “You especially desire to speak forth the will of God”.

1 Corinthians 14:2,  For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

Ø The gift of tongues: The gift of speaking fluently in an unknown language (to the speaker)  through the agency of the Holy Spirit.

A-  It’s the ability to worship God through praise in a language you have not naturally learned.

1-   In a known language

2-   In a Spiritual language.

a-   If used in a group an interpreter is necessary.

b-   If by myself just the knowledge that I am praising God more deeply than I can express.

Ø The problem at the church at Corinth all of there spiritual service was built around the speaking of tongues.

A-  They believe that they are speaking to God.

1-   This has become the focal point of this church.

a-   (what if it was CCO’s)

2-   The bible says the focal point of our ministry is to talk to man about God,  Not to God about man (He already knows).

a-   Where the bible does tell us to talk to god it is with the purpose of finding out how we can best talk to man about God.

B-  “No one understands”

1-   This tells me that this is the improper use of tongues and probably not the gift of tongues at all.

a-   Who is the no one.

-         God and everybody else.

·        If God does not know what you’re saying is it really from Him.

·        They were doing so in the midst of their services.

1 Corinthians 12:30,  Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

1 Corinthians 14:27-28,  If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.

C-  “However in the spirit he speaks mysteries.”

1-   Lower case “S” = not the H.S.

a-   This is a personality no one understands (he does not even understand himself.

1 Corinthians 14:33,  For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

1 Corinthians 14:3,  But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

A-  When tongues are used improperly it brings mysteries and confusion.

1-   But prophesies (any other gift) exorcised brings:

a-   Edification = the act of promoting another’s growth in the Christian life.

-         Salvation & discipleship

2 Timothy 3:16-17,  All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

b-   Exhortation = The coming along side in continuos support.

1 Corinthians 1:10, Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

-         Paul is exhorting the church through this letter.

c-   Comfort = peace during a trying time.

Philippians 4:7, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
