James 1:2–4 NASB95
2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
James 1
TRIALS test our faith.

Name of Christ

Man of Sorrows
Isaiah 53:3 NASB95
3 He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
John 16:33 NASB95
33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

The Beatitudes ( describes the characteristics of a Christian)

1st four - turns the mind to God
2nd four - turn the mind to others.
we give peace, purity, grace while under persecution to those around us.
The division of the beatitudes is consistent to the greatest commandments:
Mark 12:29–31 NASB95
29 Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; 30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 “The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The Ten Commandments (Regulates our relationship to God and man, a command/directive)

1st four pertains to our relationship with God.
The remaining pertains to our relationship with man.

Focus

we give mercy to fellow man.
we give peace, purity, grace while under persecution to those around us.

Greatness

First four of the beatitudes is the door to greatness.
Qualities to make us great in the kingdom.
Mark 9:35 NASB95
35 Sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
Mark 9:35
Mark 10:43 NASB95
43 “But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;
Luke 22:26–27 NASB95
26 “But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 27 “For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
To be great in kingdom requires humility, no room for pride.
Jesus want’s us to be like little children:
Matthew 18:1–4 NASB95
1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, 3 and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:1–4 NLT
1 About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” 2 Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. 3 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. 4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
What about the nature and quality of a LITTLE CHILD that God wants us to have as His children.
Simple mind
Easily believes
Dependent
Always looking to the father.
Uncorrupt mind.
Examples: THE GREAT YEARNERS IN THE BIBLE
Abraham
Hebrews 11:16 NASB95
16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.

Daniel
Paul
The 2nd four of the beatitudes are THE PRACTICES greatness.
This practices fill the world’s need for grace and holiness.

Object

A personal relationship with God changes our lives.
How we do with the first four will affect how we do with the second half.
Our relationship will change the way we deal with fellow man.
Spiritual bankcruptcy
Sorrow for our sins
Humility toward God
Desiring for righteousness from God - Hunger and thirst for it.
Extending mercy toward man through forgiveness
Pure heart - having a clean conscience - manifesting in our behavior in this world.
Peacemakers - promotes and preserve peace towards one another.
Persecuted for our faith - identifying with Christ when we suffer as a result of exercising our faith in God.
God uses our life to affect the world around us STARTING WITH YOUR FAMILY.
Our ministry is our family. They are the ones with go home to. They are the one who knows everything about us thus they will be the first to notice a spiritual change - IF ANY!
In the first four beatitudes God uses our circumstance to let us know that we NEED HIM! (1st in the list is restoration/salvation/forgiveness)
Example:
When we find ourselves POOR IN SPIRIT or BROKEN or SPIRITUALLY SEPARATED/BANKRUPT, God offers us the solution - JESUS!
Our spiritual bankruptcy makes us ready for Christ.
We go to God to supply our needs during our life struggles.
While allowing us to go through trials and troubles, he uses them as an ingredient to our spiritual maturation.
HEAT IS NECESSARY TO COOK UP A DELICIOUS MEAL.
THE PEARL IS TRANSFORM BY THE IRRITATIONS THAT ENTER THE SHELL.
THE FORMATION OF THE PEARL
Natural Pearls form when an irritant - usually a parasite and not the proverbial grain of sand - works its way into an oyster, mussel, or clam. As a defense mechanism, a fluid is used to coat the irritant. Layer upon layer of this coating, called 'nacre', is deposited until a lustrous pearl is formed.

Something to think about that next time we complain to God about our troubles.
THE SECOND HALF OF THE BEATITUDES
God expresses and makes Himself known to others through our relationships and dealing with others. God uses our transformed life as a tool to reach out to the lost. HOW MUCH SPIRITUAL MILEAGE HAVE YOU ACCUMULATED as God choose to use you to minister to others.
God allows us to use circumstances for His glory. How much has your life glorified God? How much of our day to day dealings with fellow man glorify God?

3. Can you think of a time when God used a difficult or hurtful time to help you mature spiritually? If so, write a brief note about that time.

Forgoing compensation as a the result of miscalculation just to preserve peace with customer who was a brother in the Lord.
This situation help realize to prioritize relationship over money.
My calling as a pastor or to pastor COTSR was a maturing moment.

CLOSE WITH No.4

Consider the beatitudes as key structural points of your life (just like in a house). God is building in you the ideal Christian, what portion of the whole structure is He working on right now in your life?
