Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.
And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.
And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.
So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the Lord, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.
Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.
And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.
And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
A few years ago the Pew Research Group released the findings of a survey of happiness in America. The survey found that 43% of Evangelical Christians who attended church weekly claimed to be very happy compared to 36% that attend monthly and 26% who claim not to be religious at all.

Congratulations is due in so many different areas. First of all so amazing to see two congregations to be able to come together…very apostolic for two pastors of two churches be able to come together and work in unity to accomplish more for the Kingdom.
Congratulations on the ability to be in this amazing building in such a tremendous location!

I believe that church should be the place that you leave feeling better than you did when you arrived!
When I take my wife and 4 daughters shopping at the mall, I don’t always leave feeling better than I did when I got there!
When I go to the all-you-can-eat restaurant I don’t always leave there feeling better than I did when I arrived!
But the House of the Lord should be a place that we might come in discouraged and down, but we leave encouraged and uplifted.
The subject of our preaching this morning is the Old Testament figure, David!
Today we could focus on so many aspects of the life of David:
David the shepherd
David the giant killer
David the worshipper
David the warrior
David the great King Of Israel
All of those are certainly bold themes in the chronicled life of David!
Yet, if there were a theme and a quality that stood out concerning David, it is unequivocally and undeniably, his love for the dwelling place of the presence of God!

The Bible speaks of the door as a place of opportunity
It is the Laodicean church, who is declared as Lukewarm and blindly unaware of their spiritual lack…yet in vs. 20 Jesus declares to them…behold I stand at the door and Knock!
Without question, David loved the house of God! There is no controversy in the claim that David loved the assembly of the righteous It is not an exaggeration nor an overstatement to consider that David had an obsession for the house of God and the people of God. it was David that said
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
I will declare thy name unto my brethren: In the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

In John chapter 10 vs. 9 Jesus declares
It was David that penned the poetic verse:
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

In and 12 Paul speaks of a door that had been opened to him to preach the Gospel at Troas

In Paul prayed for a door of utterance to be able to speak the mystery of Christ.
Davids love for the house of God was more than just the building…it was the people!!!!
Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
Someone said I love church…i just don’t like the people!
The Old Testament prophet Hosea referred to the valley of Achor as a door of hope
I will declare thy name unto my brethren: In the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
And I will give her her vineyards from thence, And the valley of Achor for a door of hope: And she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, And as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
And speaks of the door of faith that had been opened unto the Gentiles
And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
I know that we live in a time where it is en vogue to downplay the importance of buildings and accentuate that we…the people…are the body of Christ. I have no issue with that theology..as I agree we are the body of Christ. However, I don’t believe the revelation that we are the body negates the importance of the building that we gather in.

I agree with what Bro. Tuttle said last month at NAYC when he talked about breaking the ruler…not being able to measure a miracle…He stated that The biggest buildings in our cities should be…and will be Apostolic churches.
This building is more than square footage…more than bricks and concrete…More than just a building positioned at the corner of 8th avenue and 13th street in Marion, Iowa…
This building is a door of opportunity for this community!
It is a God-placed opportunity that has miraculously been placed in the heart of this city!
This building is the Valley of Achor for the lost and dying of this city…it is the door of hope!
Souls that have never heard the message of Jesus Christ preached will hear and see the testimonies of what God is doing and they will be drawn to this building…being offered an opportunity that will forever change their eternity!

I don’t know if you are getting the picture yet…but
To overlook its power while underlining its problems
To downplay its divine purpose while upbraiding human flaws
To excuse the positive attribute has done while exaggerating the negative.
But I believe there is someone here tonight that like David would still say…I was glad when they said unto me…let us God to the house of the Lord!

And for all of those that love church, but you cant stand the people…make no mistake about it…David’s love for the house of God was more than just a love for a facility…or even the presence of God...
But David declared that I will declare you praise in the congregation of the righteous
I will declare thy name unto my brethren: In the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
it doesn’t take much of a character study on the life of David to understand that he loved the House of the Lord! He loved the presence of God and the people of God…David loved the church!
David loved the house of God!
David loved the assembly of the righteous!
In 1 Chronicles chapter 29, as David is turning the leadership of the nation of Israel to his son Solomon…David reveals that through the years, he had been setting aside a small nest egg to finance the building of the Temple of the Lord. If you do the math and combine all of the figures together, the small stash that David had stored away, amounted to roughly 112 tons of gold and the 262 tons of sliver…in addition to the various other precious and costly stones that he had gathered. I recently read an article where the gift that David gave Solomon to go toward the building of the temple were estimated in todays dollars. The writer estimated that in todays economy the gift would have been roughly $900 million dollars.
David loved to worship in the congregation of the upright
David didn’t view the House of the Lord with reluctance.

Somewhere, something had taken place that David didn’t view worship and attendance to the House of God as duty…

His assembling with the righteous wasn’t with reluctance
1. David didn’t store up such a nest egg to help to build the temple because he shook the pope’s hand. But David had been through some things.
Somewhere, something had taken place that David didn’t worship and attendance to the House of God as duty…but he had found that the church was a Helper of His Joy!
This love and even obsession for the House of God had been developed in Davids life as a result of situations and circumstances that he had been through.
But...Somewhere along the way, David found the assembly of the righteous was a blessing and not a bother
This wasn’t some hand me down love for the church…we don’t find evidence that David’s daddy Jesse had ever danced before the Lord…that David’s siblings ever worshipped in the congregation of the righteous…
He had come to the understanding that the house of God was a delight and not a duty
a. This love for the Church (if you would)…for the house and the people of God…was the result of realizing that there’s only one place that you can find help when others betray you!
That the opportunity to enter the sanctuary was a benefit and not a detriment.
Here one thing that I am confident in…David’s love for the sanctuary and the assembly of the righteous was not religious tradition:
Davids love for the House of God wasn’t something he inherited…it wasn’t something passed down through the family tree:
we don’t find evidence that David’s daddy Jesse had ever danced before the Lord…that David’s siblings ever worshipped in the congregation of the righteous…
He danced before the Lord before worship was even a thing!
He blessed the Lord in ways that

And while there are undoubtedly many occasions and events that shaped this deep love for the presence of God and the assembly of the righteous, one occasion is found in our text reading this morning from 1 Samuel chapter 21.
I believe that what David found when he came to this place called Nob in are the elements and the attributes that the city of Cedar Rapids are going to find when they walk into this building!

One of the occasions in life of David that had developed this love and even obsession for the House of God…the People of God and the presence of God is found in 1 Samuel chapter 21...
First of all, Nob is an Old Testament type of the church

Nob was the central sanctuary where the priest served after the Philistines destroyed the sanctuary at Shiloh.
It was the where the ephod of ministry was kept
Shewbread was
To put this passage in context, just one chapter previous…David has discovered that King Saul, who he had loyally served and faithfully fought for, is intent on killing David. David’s world has been turned upside down. the man that he has loyally served is now seeking his destruction...

Chapter 20 ends in a place that most of us can relate with -
He’s got nowhere to run and nowhere to hide
David found what he would never find anywhere else.
I want to tell you why God opened positioned an Apostolic church at the corner of 13th street and 8th Avenue…because people need to find a few things here that they won’t find anywhere else in Marion, or Cedar Rapids.
The context of this passage, just verses prior, David has learned that King Saul has sworn to Kill David. The king that he has loyally served…David killed a giant that nobody else would fight to preserve Sauls kingship. 1 Samuel chapter 18 vs 13 tell us that Saul had placed David as a captain in his army and David faithfully served in that role…but now, he is being stalked by Saul and his army.
David is running from Saul....he is faint…he is weary. He’s got nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. His strength is almost gone....but then he comes to the city of Nob…then he comes to the sanctuary…to the House of the Lord…and there he is given bread. Not just any bread…but shewbread…the “bread of the Presence”.
I know there are some folks here that you can relate with David…when you came to the Church, you were broken. You had nowhere to run and nowhere to hide!
Your past had overwhelmed you and sin had become a dreadful taskmaster....You were starving..unable to be satisfied by the empty promises of this World…Your soul thirsting for something that would bring life…and then you found Nob....you found the House of the Lord…the church...
When David came to Nob, he found a bread that satisfied!
Let me tell you why God blessed with this miracle…because there are hungry doctors and lawyers in this city that aren’t being satisfied by their wealth and stature…there are drug addicts and alcoholics that aren’t finding satisfaction in their pursuits…but they are going to walk into this building and they are going to find something they wont find anywhere else!
They are going to find the bread of his presence!
They are going to find royal priesthood that has been spending time in the presence of God preparing bread for the hungry!
You found bread!
Not just any bread…Not wonder bread…Oh, its a wonder alright…but the bread of His presence!
He has no resources, no supplies, no provision and no protection
Refuge when he is running
He’s been betrayed, abandoned
He has no armor bearer…no friend and no companion...

Then David came to Nob
Nob is an old Testament type of the church…Here in the city of Nob, David would find what he couldn’t find anywhere else
He finds refuge for his running
he finds bread for his hunger
He finds bread
He finds armament for his adversary
Bread to satisfy his hunger (not just bread…but bread of the Presence)
Armament to provide hin protection from his adversary
The sword of Goliath…but this wasn’t just any sword!
When the priest offered David the sword of Goliath, David responds…there is none else like it
There are people that are desperately trying to defeat an enemy that they aren’t equipped to fight.
Trying to defeat addictions that have destroyed their minds, their relationships
Trying to outrun a past that they will never be able to outrun.
But when David came to Nob, he found a sword that was like no other...
And when they walk into this building, they are going to find weapons that are like no other.
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
They are going to find praise that confuses the enemy and overthrows adversaries
They are going to find the power of the Holy Ghost that breaks chains of addiction!
I’m here to tell you that you there is provision in the church!
God has placed this righteous assembly…this sanctuary here because they will find here, what they cant find anywhere else!

He found the priesthood
He found the priesthood
identifies Nob as the city of the priest. It was a city where the priesthood had gathered and the ephod was present. It was the place that the priest ministered.
While the priest performed many duties, one of the primary roles and responsibilities of the priest was to deal with sin.
To offer sacrifice and to take what had been unclean and present it as being clean.
When people walk into this church, they need to find that there is a high priest.
I know the trend in the religious culture of today, is to shy away from preaching against sin. Lets just preach blessing and grace and ignore sin. We don’t want to make anyone feel bad.
Lets just stay away from songs that sing about and sermons that preach about blood…we don’t want all of that gruesome, gory stuff scaring people away.
But when David came to Nob, he found the priest there…he found the altar of sacrifice there.

When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long.
Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Interlude
Psalms 32:
Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no guile.
When David came to Nob, he found a ministering priesthood…sacrifices being offered for sins!
When they come from the quardrants of this city, they are going to find a church that isn’t ignoring and shying away from sin…but a church that is preaching the power of the blood…
A church that is seeing people delivered from their guilt.

The name Nob means prophesy

All that David can think about is Saul that is out to destroy him.
Just a logic look at David’s situation, David has no future…obviously, Samuel missed it when he anointed him back in Bethlehem...
There is no way that David is going to survive this predicament…its over

This wasted anointing that is upon his life…
I’ve been anointed to be king, but I’m about to die a shepherd.
But when David came to Nob…he came to the place of the prophetic!
When I tell you that people are going to come to this church and find the presence of the prophecy…I’m not talking about fortune telling…where we tell them what color shirt they will be wearing on the 4th Tuesday in November...

I’m talking about people that are going to walk into this building and logic and human reasoning says its over…they have no future…their marriage is done…their families are finished…their dreams are devastated...
But when David came to Nob...
And then the priest brings him the sword of Goliath.
in when Saul comes and slaughters the priests for helping David…he asks Ahimelech…why did you help David…why did you give him bread…why did you give him the sword of Goliath…Ahimelech says, I inquired of the Lord and the Lord told me to give it to him!
When we walk into church and the preacher opens his mouth…wether he is preaching hell fire and brimstone or manna and blessings, it
When the priest handed David that sword, it was not only a reminder of past victory, it was a Word from Heaven…David…Im not finished with you!
You may be surrounded by 10,000s of enemies that have sent themselves against you..
It may look like Samuel got it wrong when he anointed you!!
But I’m not finished with you!
There is hope here!
There is a future here!
just this morning when i was preparing my notes, a notification came across my ipad of a new story, that a lady had been driving in the middle of a powerful storm…she came across rising water and chanced it…water began to pour into the vehicle…she called 911 as water filled the car…they story stated that the last words the drowning woman would hear was the voice of the 911 dispatch were “this will teach you, next time don’t drive in the water”.
Can I tell you there are going to come drowning in their sin…drowning in guilt and shame...
But they will find a church that will hand them the sword of Goliath…its not over!!
And they are going to come from Robins, from Marions, from Hiawatha, from Cedar Rapids…feeling like its over…but When David came to Nob...

And you might be here tonight trying to outrun a past that is too powerful for you to escape...
I’m not a victim running from a pursuant…oh, that might be where I am presently…but that’s not who I am…I’m a giant killer dripping with the anointing to be king.
I want to tell you today, there is supernatural provison!
You might be overwhelmed by the guilt and shame of sin....we have a high priest here today! The blood of Jesus is here to cleanse your sin and cover you with his righteousness!
You might be here feeling like you have not future…but I speak the prophetic Word today…its not over! God is not finished!
