Who Wants to Be Blessed of God?

A. Who wants to be blessed of God?
1. Most would say yes!
2. Your being here today or listening online indicates your interest in God’s blessing.
B. The first step in God’s way of blessing is salvation.
1. This is the message of the entire Bible.
2. There is no formula for blessing that does not begin with faith.
3. Psalm 1 assumes that a person is already a follow of God.
C. So what is our prescription for blessing? Let’s take a look...
Psalm 1:1–6 NKJV
1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

The Dangers to God’s Blessed Man (v. 1)

Psalm 1:1 NKJV
1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
A. There are detours along the way

The threefold danger:

Walking in the counsel of the ungodly

(those who are not followers of God)
(a) The ungodly always are ready to give advice
(b) This may be in the form of literature
(c) This may be in the form of advertising
(d) This may be in the form of entertainment

Standing in the way of sinners

(a) First you listen, then you live
(b) As the twig is bent...

Sitting in the seat of the scornful

(a) Note the progression: first listened, then adopted the standards, now makes fun of God’s standards
(b) The road of the scornful is always downward
C. Watch out for these dangers

The Delight of God’s Blessed Man (v. 2)

Psalm 1:2 NKJV
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.

His delight is in the law of the Lord

He has learned to make God’s Word his delight

A. To some it is boring, but to him it is blessed
B. To some it is dull, but to him it is delightful
C. To some it is fantasy, but to him it is food
D. To some it is information, but to him it is inspiration
E. But not many will make God’s Word their delight. To do this you must...

You must move against the tide

You must decide to be in the minority

A. Let’s see what King David delighted in...
Psalm 119:16 NKJV
16 I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.
Psalm 119:47 NKJV
47 And I will delight myself in Your commandments, Which I love.
Psalm 119:77 NKJV
77 Let Your tender mercies come to me, that I may live; For Your law is my delight.
Thirdly...

The Destiny of God’s Blessed Man (v. 3)

Psalm 1:3 NKJV
3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

He will be like a well-watered tree

A. What a beautiful illustration
(1) The tree reaching down its roots into the stream
(2) The river represents the Holy Spirit

This tree is fruitful

Galatians 5:22–23 NKJV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

His testimony will not wither

A. His leaf will not wither

He will prosper in whatever he does

Romans 8:28 NKJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Conclusion:
A. See the difference between the blessed man and the ungodly
(1) The ungodly are not so: refers to all of the above
(2) Like the chaff which is with the grain until the wind blows
(3) The ungodly will not stand in the judgment
B. Blessing or blight? Which will it be?
