Acts 2:22-41

“Good News the Fishing is Great”

Secular: The Perfect Fishing Trip has a plan…

  • Food… greasy… easy eating
  • Bait… the best roe, crayfish, worms
  • Rod… right weight
  • Reels… line
  • Maps / Charts
  • Net
  • Etc…. Secret Fishing Hole

Biblical: Acts 2:22 "People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus of Nazareth by doing wonderful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know. 23 But you followed God's prearranged plan. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to the cross and murdered him. 24 However, God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life again, for death could not keep him in its grip. 25 King David said this about him: 'I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. 26 No wonder my heart is filled with joy, and my mouth shouts his praises! My body rests in hope.

27 For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.

28 You have shown me the way of life, and you will give me wonderful joy in your presence.' 29 "Dear brothers, think about this! David wasn't referring to himself when he spoke these words I have quoted, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us. 30 But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David's own descendants would sit on David's throne as the Messiah. 31 David was looking into the future and predicting the Messiah's resurrection. He was saying that the Messiah would not be left among the dead and that his body would not rot in the grave. 32 "This prophecy was speaking of Jesus, whom God raised from the dead, and we all are witnesses of this. 33 Now he sits on the throne of highest honour in heaven, at God's right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today. 34 For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, 'The LORD said to my Lord, Sit in honour at my right hand 35 until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.' 36 So let it be clearly known by everyone in Israel that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified to be both Lord and Messiah!" 37 Peter's words convicted them deeply, and they said to him and to the other apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?" 38 Peter replied, "Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you and to your children, and even to the Gentiles-- all who have been called by the Lord our God." 40 Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, "Save yourselves from this generation that has gone astray!" 41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church-- about three thousand in all.

Personal: Rebekah doesn’t like going to the dentist…

It takes a well orchestrated plan…

1)      No mention of the upcoming event

2)      No letting the other kids aggravate or scare her

3)      Keep this low key going in

4)      Promise great rewards once the fight begins

5)      Play down the fear

6)      THWARTED!!

7)      The best laid plan of dad’s… can be thwarted by the simple refusal of a 7 year old to cooperate…

Bridge:  We are imperfect creatures making imperfect plans… but God takes our imperfection into account and has built the perfect plan… the Good News is the Gospel was made for imperfect people… just like you and me!!

Body:

1)      A Perfect Plan for less than Perfect People…

Acts 2:22 "People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus of Nazareth (Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God ) by doing wonderful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know. 23 But you followed God's prearranged plan. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to the cross and murdered him.

·         God authenticated the ministry of Jesus with Miracles

                                                              i.      He authenticated his prophets with miracles

ii.      He authenticates our faith with the fruit of the Spirit…

iii.      The ministry of Christ was authenticated by the Power of God demonstrated in his ministry

·         God intends the best…

·         Created a perfect world in which to dwell

                                                              i.      And we blew it

·         Revealed a perfect plan to live in peace, in joy and in harmony…

                                                              i.      How many live life according to the plan of Scripture….

·         And in spite of our unwillingness to participate in God’s plan… he used the vile and debase nature of humankind as instruments in his plan of love and redemption

** Not about our plan that God blesses but a perfect plan executed in spite of us!! We Are Imperfect!! … but God takes our imperfection into account and has built the perfect plan… the Good News is the Gospel was made for imperfect people… just like you and me!!

2)  A Perfect Plan that Can’t be thwarted!!

28 You have shown me the way of life, and you will give me wonderful joy in your presence.'

29 "Dear brothers, think about this!

32 "This prophecy was speaking of Jesus, whom God raised from the dead, and we all are witnesses of this.”

·         Opposing God:

                                                              i.      We often do…

1.      Not Surrendered

2.      Not Living in the Spirit

3.      Not Being Faithful

a.       LIKE THE JEWS WITH THE HELP OF THE ROMANS!!

·         Raised up Christ

                                                              i.      In line with God

1.      his support

2.      we have hope in him

ii.      According to the O/T Plan… (Re: David)

Gen 50:20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

… but God takes our imperfection into account and has built the perfect plan… the Good News, the hope in the Messiah… in Jesus Christ… the Gospel was made for imperfect people… just like you and me!!

3) The Perfect Plan… The Perfect King and Saviour

Acts 2: 33 Now he sits on the throne of highest honour in heaven, at God's right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.

34 For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, 'The LORD said to my Lord, Sit in honour at my right hand

35 until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.'

36 So let it be clearly known by everyone in Israel that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified to be both Lord and Messiah!"

·         The Perfect Plan

                                                              i.      Send in the Most Trusted…

                                                            ii.      Like in Business…

·         Because he arose… we can trust where our hope is.

·          Hope not in someone in the grave… Mohammed or Buddha

·          With most trusted things go as planned

                                                              i.      First as Saviour

                                                            ii.      Then the Spirit

·          Paid the price… implemented the perfect plan

·          Sent in the trusted… mission fulfilled God takes our imperfection into account and has built the perfect plan… the Good News, the hope in the Messiah… empowering by the Spirit… the Gospel was made for imperfect people… just like you and me!!

4) The Perfect Message of Hope!!

37 Peter's words convicted them deeply, and they said to him and to the other apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?"

38 Peter replied, "Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

39 This promise is to you and to your children, and even to the Gentiles-- all who have been called by the Lord our God."

40 Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, "Save yourselves from this generation that has gone astray!"

41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church-- about three thousand in all.

·         Okay what needs to be done (Brothers what should we do?)

·          How do we fit into this “Perfect Plan?”

·         Turn Away from Sin

·         Turn Towards God (his Love and Trust)

·          Live a life of obedience (baptize)

·          Welcome Aboard

This promise is to you and to your children, and even to the Gentiles-- all who have been called by the Lord our God."

·         The church is the hope of the world…

·         Lightbearers of the perfect plan… the Good News, the hope in the Messiah… empowering by the Spirit… the Gospel was made for imperfect people… just like you and me!!

Conclusion:

·         A Perfect Plan for less than perfect people…

Matthew 9: 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 12 On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

·         A Perfect Plan that can’t be thwarted

Job 42: 2 "I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted.

·         The Perfect plan… The Perfect King and Saviour

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

·         The Perfect Message of Hope…

Col 1:3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,

4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints--

5 the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel

6 that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth.
