If marriage partners are living lives of deception and deceit with one another, keeping secrets from one another, communication—that is, true intimacy—is nowhere present in that marriage.
Some people boast that they always tell the truth to their spouse, but they do it so critically or with such meanness that it destroys the other person.
Speaking the truth in love means to speak with love and grace. Both truth and grace are needed in marriage, not just one or the other.
