1Peter 1:13-15

Introduction:

Beloved of God we are dealing with a text to today that deals with the concept of

Biblical Hope. Not hope as the world thinks of it, an emotion that will not last but

instead succumbs to the difficulties and disappointments of life.  John MacArthur

says that Biblical hope in an “obligatory act of the will”.

Listen to what Alexander Maclaren says about Biblical Hope:

CHRISTIANITY has transformed hope, and given it a new importance, by opening to it a new world to move in, and supplying to it new guarantees to rest on. There is something very remarkable in the prominence given to hope in the New Testament, and in the power ascribed to it to order a noble life. Paul goes so far as to say that we are saved by it. To a Christian it is no longer a pleasant dream, which may be all an illusion, indulgence in which is pretty sure to sap a mans spiritual force, but for the Saint it is a certain anticipation of certainties, the effect of which will be increased energy and purity.

The letter of 1 peter is often called the epistle of living hope. In the previous verses

With Peter we can marvel at the wonderful activity of God in eternity past; how God

from eternity past purchased us out of the slave market of sin and graced us with

salvation and the forgiveness of all our sins:

NAU Ephesians 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love

NAU Romans 8:1 ¶ Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

We can also marvel that not only did God have mercy on our miserable condition

That today He is conforming us to the glorious image of His perfect Son….

Thus we suffer at times

ESV Romans 8:17 and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

 as He suffered and we will be like Him in Glory…

This is our present condition being conformed to the image of Christ through the

difficulties of this present life and the knowledge of the Word of God

NAU Romans 8:29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;

2Pet 1.3-8 (His precious and magnificent promises)

Peter also in the verses leading up to vs 13 reflected on the certainty of salvation

being protected by the power of God! For a salivation ready to be revealed.

These wonderful elements of our salvation are sealed realities in the Bank of God

NO enemy can tarnish or touch.

Today we will focus on what our response should be to these protected and sealed

realities of our salvation and this response is in FACT the tool that builds Biblical

Hope and a living faith.

Knowing what God has done, is doing and will do energizes and encourages us to

respond in the way that builds biblical hope.

WHAT IS THIS RESPONSE AND HOW DOES IT WORK ITSELF OUT IN OUR LIVES?

JMJ  says that “Hope is trusting God for the future”  If we have confidence that God

will bring about the completion of my Faith then we should live in the present

demonstrating lives that believe.

Peter finishes in verse 12 stating this is a salvation that angels long for!

This Response includes 3 Elements

I.             The Mental Elements of our Response

“prepare your minds for action”

A.   Use the Strength of your Mind to Build Hope

This is a Greek term for Prepare – William Barclay say it means

“Roll up your sleeves”

It also means tighten a belt or cinching a rope, tying something down

to get ready for a certain action- branding a calf –literally

“GET THINKING”

                   Brace for action-

The ancient practice of gathering up one’s robes when needing to move in a hurry; here, it is metaphorically applied to one’s thought process. The meaning is to pull in all the loose ends of one’s thinking, by rejecting the hindrances of the world and focusing on the future grace of God [1]

NAU Ephesians 6:14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,

NAU Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

NAU Luke 12:35 ¶ "Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit.

7.55  avnazw,nnumai ta.j ovsfu,aj th/j dianoi,aj: (an idiom, literally 'to bind up the loins of the mind') to prepare oneself for learning and thinking - 'to get one's mind ready for action, to be ready to learn and to think, to be alert.

The Lower 5 vertebrate sustain a person when exerting his strength

B.   Use the Strength of your Mind as an Athlete

The NT use the idea of preparation also of an athlete

NAU 1 Corinthians 9:24 ¶ Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.

NAU Hebrews 12:1 ¶ Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

To Timothy Paul wrote”

NAU 2 Timothy 2:5 Also if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules.

Here peter doubles the Metaphor – applying the idea of preparation- pulling up of the robe with the minds readiness

TAKE AN INVETORY OF HOW YOU ARE EXERTING BIBLICAL DISCIPLINES

2 PET 1.3-8   READ….

Make sure you have the right thoughts about God, the family, faith…what the Bible

says about them….not your friends or church or even your own reasoning alone.

John Calvin said “It’s the picture of the strongest mental activity”

See what the benefits of using the Scripture to build strong biblical understanding

Psalm 119: 97-105 READ

C.   Use the Strength of your Mind to Correct Moral Failure

“prepare”

Remember that a lazy mind begins to hide or obscure the true knowledge of God

Rom 1.18-32 shows that obscuring/hiding the knowledge of God is the source of Moral corruption.

8 times in the 2nd peter, Peter teaches on the Knowledge of God and in 2 Pet 2.18

peter states  believers have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord

NAU Matthew 22:37 And He said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'

Having your mind in readiness,  is this first great key in building Biblical hope!

II.           The Sobering Elements of Our Response

“Keep Sober”

nh,fw be sober, be well balanced, self-controlled –to be free of Mental and Spiritual Excess

In the central nervous system, serotonin plays an important role as a neurotransmitter in the modulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, appetite, and metabolism,

Extremely high levels of serotonin can have toxic and potentially fatal effects, causing a condition known as serotonin syndrome.

Alcohol and Drugs minimize or eliminate this chemical in the brain- Changes reality

Just as drugs and alcohol change and obscure reality imbibing in the worlds ideas keeps you from seeing the true foundation of your Hope The will trained by the scripture not an emotion

The opposite of Excess is filling of the Spirit Eph 5.18/col 3.16

There are 3 ideas I thought about when Peter says “Keep Sober”

A.   These are Qualities a Drunk cannot Possess

1.   Steadfastness Psalm 37:3

2.   Self-control Gal 5.22

3.   Clarity of mind

NAU 1 Peter 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

4.    Moral decisiveness – Joseph ran from Potifer’s wife

5.    Effectual Prayer

NAU 1 Peter 4:7 ¶ The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.

An undisciplined mind prays in ignorance…..

B.   These are Qualities that Indifferent cannot possess

Being “Sober” also means being alert……

NAU 1 Thessalonians 5:6 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.

NAU 1 Thessalonians 5:7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.

NAU 1 Thessalonians 5:8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.

Not being sober in the spiritual sense is letting the Flesh, that residue of the former nature to take charge of your priorities ………Hope begins to fade if we find ourselves too entangled in the world.

NAU Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

NAU Ephesians 4:14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;

III.       The Obedient Elements of Our Response

“obedient children”

A.   Obedience is the Recognizable Feature of Our Faith

Outside the quality of Love which Jesus said is the distinguishing feature as a

Christian Obedience to Our Lord is the critical element to building Hope…….We have

heard the term keep hope alive…..obedience in the face of struggles….seeing God

work on our behalf….reenergizes our faith and hope in the future.

NAU 1 Peter 1:22 ¶ Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart,

Purification of the soul comes from obedience to the Truth and faithfulness always builds Hope in your heart and the heart of other saints.

NAU Romans 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,

NAU Romans 6:18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

B.   Obedience was always the Recognizable Feature of Our Lord

NAU John 4:34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.

NAU John 5:30 ¶ "I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

C.   Obedience is the Recognizable Command of Our God

NAU John 8:31 ¶ So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;

NAU John 14:15 ¶ "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

     GOD MOVES IN A MYSTERIOUS WAY

God moves in a mysterious way

his wonders to perform;

He plants his footsteps in the sea,

and rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines

of never-failing skill

He treasures up his bright designs,

and works his sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;

the clouds ye so much dread

Are big with mercy, and shall break

in blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,

but trust him for his grace;

Behind a frowning providence

he hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,

unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,

but sweet will be the flow’r.

Blind unbelief is sure to err,

and scan his work in vain;

God is his own interpreter,

and he will make it plain.
