1 Corinthians 10:1-13
My dad was one of my biggest wrestling fans.
He loved watching me play baseball but he really loved watching me wrestle.
I have a very vivid memory of one morning during my wrestling career.
I remember it was cold and their was snow on the ground.
I told my dad that I wanted to run to school that morning in order to train and get in better shape.
It was my senior year.
I had not lost a match.
My senior year of High School I only lost two matches I believe.
This memory sticks out to me because my dad said he would bring my books to school for me.
It was so cold you could see my breath with every step.
We lived 3 miles from school.
I was running through downtown Lebanon and passing by the First Baptist Church and my dad drove by in his truck taking his stuff to school.
He did not stop and offer me a ride nor did I try and flag him down for a ride.
He drove by and looked over at me with a half grin on his face that showed how proud he was of me.
My dad did not stop and I did not flag him down because we both knew I was putting in the work.
I was putting in the work that would eventually lead to me standing on the podium at state.
Throughout my wrestling career I often encountered teammates that wanted to experience the same success as me but did not want to put in the work to make it happen.
This goes for many things in life.
Often we see people jealous of others
spiritually (I want a relationship with Jesus like they have)
financially
parenting (Good parent)
relationship wise (romantic)
or you name it.
It is common that as humans we desire the success of others but don’t want to put in the work.
In wrestling, teammates wanted the success that I experienced but they did not want to wake up in the mornings and run to school in the snow (where it was uphill both ways jk)
One of my favorite Dave Ramsey quotes is:
I worked my tail off for 40 years for the media to call me an overnight success.
-Dave Ramsey-
Last week we looked at
Paul gave up rights because of the gospel
Chapter 9 concluded with Paul writing
1 Corinthians 9:24-
Paul says I discipline my body and bring it under strict control so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
Paul is saying I exercise strict control and discipline my body so that I don’t miss out on what the Lord has for me.
I want all the Lord has and because I want all that he has I discipline my body.
I give up my rights so that I don’t miss out on anything the Lord has for me.
This leads us into this set of verses in chapter 10.
We keep in mind that he says I discipline my body and bring it under strict control and then he begins to lay out some things we should consider from Israels past.
1 Corinthians 10:1-
Here God’s word uses the Old Testament to tell the story of God.
God’s word through Paul reminds of of the history of our God.
The Israelites were God’s chosen people.
Their story is much like your story and my story.
God chooses us and he desires relationship with us and he pursues us.
Maybe you are here and received that love or God is still pursuing you.
God used the Israelites to show us His character.
In Exodus, we read of this story of God setting his people free.
God led his people out of slavery and one of the methods he used was a cloud to lead them..
You see all the Israelites were under the cloud.
All walked through the Red Sea on dry ground.
This is the story of God delivering Israel from Pharoah and his army.
The army pursed Moses and the Israelites and God parted the waters so that Israel walked through on dry ground.
All the Israelites passed through the sea
the Israelites were all baptized into Moses, that is, united with their spiritual head, God’s servant, who became the object of their trust
All the Israelites believed in the Lord and trusted in the Lord’s servant Moses
v.3 All the Israelites ate the same spiritual food.
Exodus
Exodus 16:1
The Corinthians experience this bread from heaven as well.
John
v.4 The Israelites all drank the same spiritual drink
The Corinthians experienced this water through Jesus
John
God’s work among the Israelites is amazing.
His faithfulness, His love and his ability to rescue a group of people that were in slavery and this group at times didn’t even realize how badly they needed to be rescued.
This is the Israelites story but this is our story.
God rescued me when I didn’t even realize how badly I needed to be rescued.
Jesus died on the cross for us while we were yet sinners.
God rescued me from slavery when I thought slavery was better for me.
God’s love for the Israelites is our story too.
Through Jesus those who are in Jesus take from the bread of life, and experience living water.
It is truly amazing or awesome that as Christians we are set free.
Through Jesus we have freedom, through Jesus he rescues us, through Jesus he Loves us in the same manner he loved the Israelites.
1 Corinthians 10:5
God desired to bring them in to the promise land but many were struck down in the wilderness.
Many never experienced the promise land.
Paul says let this be an example for us so that we don’t desire evil things as they did.
Remember Paul says I bring my body under strict control and exercise discipline so that I might not be disqualified.
He says don’t desire Evil things like the Israelites did and their final result was that they did not enter the promise land.
You see many want the promise land but not many want to put in the work to get there.
Many want to stand on the podium but few want to put in the work to get there.
Few want to wake up in the morning and run to school in the snow.
the Corinthians’ complacency in matters of self-discipline and their corresponding penchant for self-indulgence required immediate remedial action.
Christian freedom was not meant to lead to self-indulgence but to selfless service
Christian freedom was not meant to lead to self-indulgence but to selfless service
1 Corinthians 10:7
Exodus
Sexual Immorality
1 Corinthians 10:
The Israelites took part in this sexual immorality that the women of Moab made idol worship to their gods.
God could do in Corinth and bring death to the sexual immoral in the same way he did to the Israelites.
Some in Corinth are arguing that everything is permissible to them.
Paul says what happened in Moab could happen in Corinth.
Exercise self control.
1 Corinthians 10:9-10
Numbers
The Israelites questioned the plan God had for them.
The Corinthians in their great knowledge and thought at times knew better than God.
