Before we get to our main text for the morning, let me paint a picture so we can get a clear idea of where we are at this point in the story.
Jesus calls 12 unlikely young men out of their ordinary lives to follow him as his disciples
Jesus invests 3 years into them and leads them perfectly
Jesus keeps preaching that the Kingdom of God is at hand. That it is coming and that it is now here.
Jesus brings the disciples into a private and intimate passover celebration. Before they celebrate the passover, Jesus radically and humbly washes the disciples feet.
Jesus explains that this great Jewish feast that has been celebrated for over 2600 years is really about him. That the bread is representative of his body. And that the wine is representative of his blood. (This was a prediction of his own sacrificial death, but the disciples did not understand this at the time. That Jesus had to die. And that through that death, Jesus would reconcile them to the eternal God.)
Jesus promises the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises that the presence of the Holy Spirit will be so great, that it is good that he goes so that the Holy Spirit will come.
Jesus teaches his disciples that he is the true vine, and that if they are not connected to him, they have no life in them.
Jesus teaches them the great command, that they love one another, just as Jesus has loved them. Jesus says that greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Jesus tells his disciples that they will be hated by the world, but not to worry, because the world hated him first.
Jesus prays for his disciples. Interceding before God for his disciples.
Let’s look at Matthew’s account of the story at this point:
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested. The disciples scatter. This is the last time the disciples interact with Jesus that we know of, with the exception of John, before his crucifixion.
Jesus endures total abandonment, 3 unjust Roman trials, gruesome beatings, mocking, and the wrath of God
The disciples were afraid. If I was to guess and if was to use our modern vernacular, I’d say the disciples were “freaking out.”
This is where we pick up the story and get to our text for the morning.
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Would it be reasonable for Jesus to be upset with the disciples?
Might the disciples have been ashamed of their behavior?
We might be the most entitled generation in the most entitled country to ever walk the face of this planet.
Our sense of justice. Our sense of what we deserve is terribly skewed.
The problem is we don’t fully grasp our condition before God.
Adam & Eve - Our rebellion against makes us accursed
Our God is just, and he will crush his enemies.
Our God is righteous, the wicked will not go unpunished.
Our sin, our rebellion, our treason against our creator has condemned us to death.
Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans:
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
and
“The wages of sin is death”
SO… When Jesus says “Peace be with you.” Those words have power.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul wrote,
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
Jesus says it again,
“Peace be with you.”
It’s on this foundation of the peace of God, that we are commissioned into the world.
It’s only after understanding our reconciliation with Jesus that we are sent.
We are sent from a position of peace to proclaim peace.

How did the Father send Jesus?
Into the mess...
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
