How to Walk in the Spirit 2

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Last week we started on this and we covered the works of the flesh

And the answer to Not fulfilling the works of the flesh is walking in the spirit

But in order to do that you need to see the contrast The works of the flesh are opposite of the fruit of the spirit

And if you have these things in your life you can recognize your need to walk in the spirit.

And he tells you in this passage how to walk in the spirit.

We used the illustration of a metronome.

So today we are going to be talking about how to do that but we will emphasise the spirit side instead of the flesh side.

The Purpose

Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Now the judaizers were trying to pit these people against each other

And set each other apart based on their adherence to the law.

They were trying to use them to make them look good.

Paul said I am teaching you these things about walking in the spirit

And what it looks like to walk in the flesh

But this is not to manipulate one another

Or to make yourself look good and to be honored among men.

You know what it means if people look up to you?

Nothing it is vain. Do not be desirous of that glory.

If you see a brother walking in the spirit do not envy him.

The purpose of all this is to please the Lord.

Do not be happy at someone's failures do not be uneasy at their successes

Because if not careful when you get to walk with God you will then see who is not walking with God and you will start to judge them and look up to yourself

The point is not us it is God.

We need to get that

The Power

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Now I want you to think about that.

How many of you say I am saved I am born again?

Ok then you live in the spirit.

You do not live of your own power you were made alive through the spirit of God.

HE is the one that gave you life.

You were dead in trespasses in sin.

The holy spirit quickened you.

You hath he quickened who were dead

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

That is how we live in the spirit.

Now here is the other part If we live in the spirit let us walk in the spirit.

Now how do you live in the spirit. I just trust I just breathe not much to it I just accept the fact that I am alive.

Let us also walk in the spirit.

See he did more than give us life.

He did not just heal them but gave them power to walk

How do we overcome the works of the flesh how do we have the strength to do that ?

If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

If we live in the spirit let us walk in the spirit

How do exhibit the fruit of the spirit that is not me? No it is not it is Jesus

He gives you the power

You have to put on your power suit . Put on the Lord Jesus

Rom_13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Heirs with Christ

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

If we live in the spirit let us walk in the spirit

The Process

And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Are you saved ?

Than you have crucified the flesh

So how does that process work.

First he has to kill the flesh to break ist power.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

For he that is dead is freed from sin.

He put it to death so it no longer has power over you

A dead man no longer has to do time. A dead man no longer is captivated by the jail cell.

Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

This is an offensive illustration in our culture.

But the illustration is this he died. Go on and get married. Stop tring to keep those old passions alive.

The passions and lust are dead now you are free to be married to another even Christ

We do not owe the flesh anything it is dead.

Joy

The passion or emotion excited by the acquisition or expectation of good

The cause of joy or happiness.

JOY is a delight of the mind, from the consideration of the present or assured approaching possession of a good.

No matter what happens this is as bad as it gets I am leaving soon going to be with him.

Looking for that blessed hope.

That is no matter what happens you cant take our joy because it comes from the spirit of God.

Who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame

Just a part of the spirit of God walking in the spirit it can't be quenched.

Looking on the bright side.

It is how christians endured physical tourture and enslavement and did not break their spirit.

Peace

God is fighting my battles

God is keeping me above the storm and through the storm

No agitation no fighting or friction

Peace fruit of the spirit.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

He puts it all in order he is the author the originator of peace. No Jesus no peace

Isa_57:21 There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

How is your peace ?

It comes from him you do not have to author it.

Longsuffering

We usually use the word patience

Suffer long with some one.

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

How many chances has God given you?

How many times has he put up with yur constant mistakes.

Just man falls seven times we have done that a lot more than seven times

It does not throw people away

Offers them a path forward.

Let me ask you this are you long suffering ?

How do you deal with people that don't get it?

Gentleness

Approachable kind welcoming

For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:

Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.

But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:

So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

People are fragile

The meaner they are the more fragile they are

When you respond with gentleness it confuses them.

Psa_18:35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.

Baby gentle they become great because of moms gentleness

For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

We submit to God and our authority and try to please them. In a godly way

Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.

Temperance

Moderation in regards to appetites

When to say no when to push back from the table.

Let your moderation be known to all men.

And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Put a knife to they throat if thou be a man given to appetites

It means the Lord is in control of your appetite and you do not let it control you

Do not let the flesh reign.

against such there is no law.

You can have the fruit of the spirit in afghanistan

You can have it in egypt

No law against this stuff.

No excuse

Notice it is not what you do it is who you are

It is not soulwinnning , going to church , tithing , wearing dresses , cutting your hair .
