OPENING
As Mommy Connie said.. “There is Joy in Serving the Lord”
Indeed, it is pure joy to serve the Lord
When the seventy two returned after they were sent ahead by our Lord, they had joy in their hearts, listen..
Let’s take a look at what happened why they were filled with so much joy when they returned
Let us see how Jesus modeled for them what we must do when we are told to go ahead of Him
TEXT: | Jesus Sends Out the Seventy Two
:1-4
Why did the Lord appointed 72 missionaries?
He is probably following the example of Moses, who commissioned seventy elders plus Eldad and Medad (-29)
The Sanhedrin is also composed of 70 members, 71 including the high priest
They were sent by two’s.
Why not three or more? or why not send them alone?
Jesus described the large number of people ready to receive the kingdom message and relatively few people are available to share His message of love, grace, mercy and salvation
He said, Go!
I am sending you like lambs among the wolves
Lambs among the wolves?
Was Jesus throwing his disciples to sure death?
Were they released by the Lord for their sure destruction?
No, Jesus means that as they go, they will be in some sense, at the mercy of the world
And their own strength cannot cope up with the situation in which they’ll find themselves
They must look up to God and not on themselves
They were even told not to bring their purse or sandals
Does this means that we have to walk around our neighborhood barefooted?
No, Jesus implied that we must take along nothing for the journey
He wants us to be completely dependent on Him
In another teaching session, Jesus illustrated Himself as the vine, and we are the branches
We are to solely rely on God’s guidance and God’s provisions
“Where God guides, God provides”
The typical problem we christians encounter whenever we’re called to action is that, we tend to overlook the most important ingredient to a successful mission
We tend to do things on our own rather than relying completely on God’s authority
“God’s Authority is Released Through Partnership”
From the very beginning of humanity, God wants to forge “partnership” with mankind
This partnership that God wants to have with us humans dates back to the time of creation
In the first chapter of the book of Genesis we find a summary of the 6-days of creation
In Chapter 2 we find a little more detail about day 6
God put the man to work and take care of the Garden
God could have created the garden to be self sustaining with no need for care, but He did not
Instead He created humans to “work” the garden and to “take care” of the garden with the idea of making it flourish
Do you think God cannot do things by Himself?
Absolutely not!
Surely, He could do everything without needing any help from anyone
But God decided to do things in “partnership” with us because “His Authority is Released through Partnership”
Everything we do with God must come from a deep place of intimacy
Jesus did only what He saw and heard from His Father
In the same manner, we can have an impact in evangelism only as we hear Jesus in our day-to-day lives
Jesus is our good shepherd and He sends us with His authority
We have to understand our role as friends of God and partners of Jesus
Jesus said look for the man of peace.
Who is the man peace?
Peace is used throughout Luke in reference to God’s blessings
Man of Peace is a person who’s God’s blessings rest
Man of peace is someone who promotes peace
He also said to stay at the house where you find the man of peace
In other words, Jesus is telling us and His disciples that when we find a man of peace, we must not hurry
If they offer us something to drink, we must drink it and if they offer us something to eat, then we must eat it
Jesus wants us to spend time with that family whom you found a man of peace
Jesus gave us and His disciples the authority to preach, heal and demonstrate His love
Jesus gave us His authority to cast out demons
We cannot do it alone, we need intimacy with him to know His thoughts and plans for the harvest
Why is it important to follow Jesus both in everyday life and while doing outreach?
Because apart from Him we can do nothting
On another occasion Jesus Christ said…
As true disciples of Jesus, we will only bear much fruits if we remain in Him and His words remains in us
But when you are not welcomed, just simply shake the dust off your feet
Don’t feel bad about it, but rather be happy because you have a beautiful feet for you bring the good news
Do not take that as personal rejection because Jesus said…
