1st Corinthians, we survived the introduction and came back. Amen. Thank you. I appreciate it. So we're going to go ahead and read these first few verses here this morning.

It's Britney didn't put verse 1 through 3 of that's fine. I'm just going to read it to get some background Paul called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus and our brother sosthenes to the Church of God that is in Corinth to those Sanctified in Christ. Jesus called to be Saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ both of their lord and ours grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Our text mainly this morning give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus that in every way you were in Richton him and all speech and all knowledge. Even if the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you so that you are not lacking in any gift. As you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ who will sustain you to the end Guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful by whom you were called into the fellowship of his son. Jesus Christ Our Lord.

I was almost three years into marriage. We got married January 2009 and we were two Christmases into marriage now. I like Christmas, but I'm pretty much the Grinch in the family if we're going by like who's hot and cold on that scale when it comes to Christmas and my wife is Little Cindy Lou Who with Christmas loves Christmas. We have an entire wall in the garage dedicated to Christmas decorations loves Christmas and somehow every move down if it gets lost. I'm not sure that's going to happen this next time, honey. All right, so just to give you a little bit of where where on the scale there and I can recall this Christmas in particular was our second one and we'd had Ava and Decorations were going up and I was over its to be honest and as decorating was happening. I just going to hang out with my wife and so I took on the skill of picking boxes and moving them and I took on the scale of putting up nails and walls and kind of my role in the house. I'm Not The Decorator that is my wife. I just move heavy things and I put holes in walls and that's that's what God has called me to in our marriage and I'm quite okay with that. Well, I wanted to get the show on the road for the evening and so I decided to help wrap presents. And so we're sitting down on the floor together early in our marriage and I'm wrapping these presents and my wife is like how you're doing such a good job. You are such a great rapper. And I'm like, yeah, this is awesome. I'm participating in this and then what happens next? I'll never forget this. She goes to put the presents around the tree and I'm watching and she puts the one she rapped right up front and another up front and another up front and I'm wanted she gets to mine and each one of those presents goes to the very back of the tree nets.

She lied to me. She I didn't know this but present wrapping not only is it an art form, but it's part of the decor of Christmas and I just couldn't make the cat. I'm a back row rapper. That's that's what I have accepted in life. And I try not to rap Much Anymore a however because we have four children. It's still called upon I'm getting to the years though. We're going to be mostly envelopes sticking on the tree though. That won't flatten Rd. Tell here's the deal. A little bit like my story Christianity to you. Here's why I think they are messed up. They have all of these issues yet. Paul is opening up this letter to Corinth and he saying you guys are saying since you guys are Sanctified you guys are sustained you guys are gifted and we have to take a step back and it almost feels a little bit like Paul's like my wife like you guys are pretty good. But really you're going to have to be behind the tree kind of Christians.

A raise of hands how many of us feel like that in our walks with Jesus? You know what I'm saying where it appears that everybody else around us. How's it going on when it comes to their walk since Jesus just like I don't even want to open Facebook or Instagram in the morning. Cuz some dude has already gotten up read his Bible prayed and worked out and I'm just making coffee right now or somebody else is already written their blog for the day read three others. The house is sparkling clean is Crock-Pot Don and you're going how in the world they just like to get it all done. What in the world is going on. I feel like a second-rate second-class Christian and this morning, but I want us to look at it a title that I've stolen from a man camp. We went to a few years ago, but this letter to Corinth is going to serve as Christianity for people who aren't good at Christianity. And I think we'd all sort of half raised our hands this morning and go that's probably me. We know there's some shiny Christians. We want to put up front and having lead us but I'm pretty much reserved and in the back and Paul is writing this letter and he's writing a letter of Correction. He's writing a letter to answer questions coming at course because they have problems and when I say they have problems, I mean they have serious problems like 1st Corinthians, 5 like some step son is having relationship with his stepmother and they're like, this is great the boasting about it and Paul says you're doing something that not even the pagans participate in and you're approving of it. They have legal issues with one another and they have problems. I think it very much feel like this second great group a second sent that people sorry in that situation this morning. If you are in here, you're like, I'm just not very good at being a Christian. Welcome to the club. Welcome to Corn welcome to redeemers. But Paul is going to say some pretty incredible things about you. The first thing called that if he tackles are core identity and he does that in those first three verses that we read and looked at briefly last week and we going to just briefly look at here this morning. He says first and foremost your identity your inner core. What makes you you this is who you are. He talked to other churches and other times and he says when you were away from Christ, you were alienated your enemies to God, but now you've been reconciled unto God you live in a kingdom of darkness, but you're not transferred into a kingdom of life, but he says you are Sanctified Sanctified not just as idea that you are being Sanctified which is happening as we're walking with Jesus, but he uses his past tense. You are Sanctified. This is who you are. God has set you apart for his own purposes quill and desires. He looks at them and he says you who are dwelling in Corinth and is horribly idolatrous City in which their practices would be appalling to us a place where none of us in this teenager TV feel remotely comfortable taking our children to he looks at them and he says you are Sanctified. This is who you are at your very core even when you don't feel like it's not only that but you are Saints. That's who you are. We ask this last week who feels like a saint in here. I don't know if anybody really put up their hand. This is what he said about you. You are Saint and a saint you are gifted. Attempted you and I'm giving you the opportunity to build your serve and participate in the kingdom of God. And then he says something even more astounding that we're going to focus on more next week, but I have to mention this way. You are sustained by God because of him not because of you because we open up going to court has problems. But this is who God says, they are know what's going on in this introduction for Paul is Paul is not praising them but praising God for what he has done in them. That's a huge distinction when Paul calls them all. These things doesn't go while you work so hard for sainthood congratulations were going to canonize you we're going to put you in we're going to put your name up there and everybody's going to celebrate you and someday pray to you know, that's not what he's saying here. You say you are saying you are Sanctified you are sustained because of what God has done in you not because of what you are doing or what you are cheating. If you had said that it would have just fed their egos in the desire for self-promotion. This remember was the city who is erecting statues to put their names on them. So it would they could make a name for themselves for anybody's coming in and traveling for all their friends to see how great they are. How is not feeding their ego because he's stripping them of that N'Sync This is all because of what God has done and you look at what God has done. Music on this mindset of look at me and look at all. I have done we can become egotistical much like corn we can come too prideful in our work. Art first Sunday in this building we did for baptisms. And if you're here one man got up. And his testimony was so powerful because he essentially said I lived the life that said look at me and what I have done look at what I have achieved look at what I have accomplished it. What kind of Christian I am and on the outside. I had it all together and then got brought me down to the ground and floored me and I realized who I actually was and I'm no longer not having to fight these stigmas of I've got it together because I have met Christ and know Christ I now growing and godliness cuz he has gotten ahold of my heart and his testimony is so powerful and important because it takes the pressure off and what Paul is doing. Is he taking the pressure off in a sense in Corinth? He says this is who you are. Now. This is how you left because of who you are your inner core. God has radically changed you on the inside and reordered your life. This is not what the outflow ought to be. We don't simply start with the outside and work in if the inside that works out and if you're somebody has been striving and struggling and trying to maintain this Christian Persona good luck with that. You will never measure up to the standards and always feel like second-rate second-class kind of Christian, but when you understand that God has transformed and changed you that revolutionizes how you can live your life and Paul gives us a deep encouragement before he addresses the serious problems. Look at what God has done look at who you are in Christ and what Paul wants them and us to be thinking about is God and who we are in relation to God now the world Western culture and society that we live in today. We mentioned this in communion last week. They're pushing us towards extreme forms of individualism. Then what you thinking about your life and relationship the things you do or don't have deciding what you to buy into extreme individualism as a means of Hope and a way to form some kind of New Hope you and I'll talk about how this plays out a little bit in our lives been on some forms on some planes of it. The way that Society wants is for you to be defined by what you do or don't have the body you do or don't have the home you do or don't have the job you do or don't have that's how we like to Define our life. That's what we want to be known by are these areas of places we can control and showcase and say now love me accept me because of what I do or don't have Google what I can achieve Am I to become Define this way or we think the Pinnacle of humanity? Is this mine set up? If we just Live and Let Live and do whatever is right in our own site, then we've arrived to the fullest extent of what it means to be human.

Come. Even in forms of hold your morality, but don't hold your morality over me. What is being crammed into our brains? And what is coming rushing towards us in this day and age is this mindset of it's all about you. And if you want to achieve happiness salvation contentment if you want real hope live for you and this was a friendly problem and corn this idea of look at who speaks well and look at who can prophesy look you can speak in tongues. Look who can get up on Sunday. Look who has the House Church look at who is Rich and look at who is poor. Let's get preference to these different areas and got through. This letter is attacking the individualism in their culture as well as the radical individualism in hours. Now listen to me God created individuals and individuals matter your Chase your dreams your desires to the gifting that God has given you fair and Incredibly important unique and he's bringing us together as the body of Christ to work in his kingdom now. It got no to the means of Hope and salvation and the way to obtain life because an incredibly dangerous place to live. Leaving individualism is our help the way to be satisfied the way of Salvation will leave you wanting more and more and this truly is the pitfalls of our progress society today this idea that when I finally find myself and arrive then I will be happy. What does this radical individualism individualism have to do with me? Why does it matter? How does it impact my life? And I want you to think a little bit through this with me this morning. The God has made you an individual. Send fractured relationship. We put ourselves above God and seek after what we think is going to satisfy ourselves. And this Mantra of I'm going to take a couple years and find myself anybody ever heard that he really do that. You're going to find your pretty horrible person. I promise you get away long enough and get to know yourself. You're going to think man. I am a sinner I this is messed up business idea. If I find myself going to come to self-actualization, then I'll cheap what it means to actually be human and I was happy for me. This is Genesis 3, this is that Narrative of Adam and Eve there in the Garden Inn at Circle coming and they say we want to know we wouldn't know if you want to know more about ourselves. It already told them everything they needed to know and given them everything that they needed but they went around God to get the good life for themselves. And this is how it plays out in our lives today. And this is why I want to focus on this first and foremost this morning because it is a huge problem within our culture today if we believe that individualism is what's going to be that thing that saves us. It's going to give us hope it's going to have a negative ramifications in our lives in a marriage. It might look like this you do what pleases you and you alone. You don't esteem the other person above yourself. Your needs come first and it causes conflict. Why what is preached at us? Your happiness is the most important thing in the world, right? Can I hear that Weekly? Find what makes you happy and just do it. What if what makes me happy is staying out on the river every week for 10 hours. Going to go honey. Yeah, I'm not very well, but it makes me happy stream case. However, this is what it being portrayed and it's trickling down into our lives and our thought processes. It's this idea of what James wrote about in James chapter 5, what causes Wars and conflicts among you is it not your own desires the rise within you this is why we fight you know, why we think we fight is because the person sitting across the table from us know James says we fight we wore we battle because our own desires that have risen up and then we make demands on other people to meet those demands. Animal society that doesn't look at culture and say you know, what? What I'm doing is part of this good in this world and finding some sort of important and being a part of society but the individuals of the utmost importance. This is the trickle-down effect that happens, or maybe it's with your children. Maybe maybe not on Monday this last week. I'm not sure maybe or maybe not my wife left out some stain in front of our house that we're trying to sell maybe or maybe not two of my children. That was a good idea to stay in the garage. hahaha The story certainly happened and so my oldest daughter who is so responsible. She wouldn't partaken it but she gladly watch the whole thing happen. And then she comes walking into the house and says very casually mommy. Daddy Eleanor and Benny are doing something naughty you should go talk to them and we were having a fairly serious conversation. I'm thinking I can't be that bad. And so I sent her back out and she comes back and she says no you should look daddy and I see my son with this brush going like this and he's so happy and I look at him penny drop it. And I looked at my wife and I go. If I go out there this is going to end poorly for every single person in the family tonight. I am very upset. Can you handle this for a second while I cool down? So she goes out there. She's sweet and Stern and talks to them. And then I finally cool down and I go out there and I chat with them and we have a nice long talk about disciplining. What's going to happen in Ava goes. Why am I being punished Daddy? Alternate all you watched it. You're going to learn a valuable lesson right here right now. Here's the deal and why I share this the stain on the garage is not the end of the world but is incredibly inconvenient to me that night and it got in my way and my plans what I wanted to do in the last thing I wanted to do is go out there and cover that spot with Moore paints. It was going to cost me and take of me and I'm not saying you just turn a blind eye. I just let things go and not discipline and not deal with it. But this society that says your happiness is of the utmost importance. And if anything gets in the way of that you better handle it. You better deal with it. You have a right to erupt is incredibly wrong. Can happen in our jobs. It's going to happen in our local church like Corinth. Cheating in the local church, we come here and we went all this to exist for us. We show up on Sunday. You want the music to exist for us. We want the sermon to be tailor-made for us. We want everything to be perfect in its place and if it's not is another option just down the block over there and we would all our relationship to be neat and clean and everything to be working out properly. And if it doesn't my mindset is I'm just going to move on to the next place. I'm going to take on the next church. And if they don't think I'll go to the next one. And this is how individualism in a bad way creeps into our society and we begin to determine what we think is right or wrong are good for us. And so what we need to do though is like what Paula saying here what lens do you currently view your life through? The moment you say life is on my terms or life is on God's terms or better yet this morning. How do you get the good life? What is your value come from? What is your self-worth come from? Do you know that your Saints? Do you know that your Sanctified? Do you know that you will be sustained? Do you know that that will carry you through the darkest of days? But even when you send instead of horribly that God still loves you cares for you enough. That in itself is enough to lift up our head and like the Solomon steel to cry out. My couch is filled with tears. He says my eyes are swollen from sorrow and crying but I can cry out to you. Because of what you have done. It brings a tremendous stability into our lives as a park is a streambook corn and Us of three things here this morning in the past. There is Grace. Does grace in the present cuz the present quickly becomes your past that means there's also Grace in the future as well. But there is Grace for you. And this is a huge word that we like to shrink down and we'll unpack a little bit here this morning. But he says there is Grace there are gifts in the present way. They want you to serve and their future guarantees because of his faithfulness. Not your faithfulness is a his faithfulness Grace that Paul talks about I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ. Jesus really begins to sum up what it means to have Grace mithaas true. Love to do the acronym thing. He said Grace is God's riches at Christ's expense God's riches at Christ's expense essentially means his grace is something that is Not merited not earned but it's favor that is placed upon you and it's God's gift to you is what Paul is saying here is because he has given you this this idea of Grace is huge and massive in our lives. Why because there is this thing called judgments. We all know what that is. I gave a little bit of it to my children when they stained the garage, but there is far worse that have been committed and done in our hearts and our mind in our lives maybe even physically outwardly and it demands judgment human hearts cry for judgments II something goes terribly wrong in this world. We want Vengeance. We want something to be done. Our hearts cry for judgements. Oh you get these groups of say all we should never never have any that how could have got it at you yourself created in His image want to see judgment happen when there is a trocity and things committed in this world. There's a strong basis for why there ought to be judgment judgment is getting what you deserve. None of the people who were reuseit Mercy Mercy is not getting what you deserve Mercy is God didn't tell you this week for lying. That's Mercy. That's good. News. Mercy is letting someone off the hook Mercy is Noah gets off the boat. He plants Vineyard. He gets tanked. He's passed out drunk. His other son comes in and does something weird and God doesn't start over again.

Mercy is getting pulled over by your local police officer and going it's a warning today.

Praise God God has lots of Mercy Grace is getting what you don't deserve. Race would have been taking my kids out to Yogurt after they stay in the house. We didn't do that. We just showed Mercy. We didn't show Grace Grace is not that you just Escape judgment, but you have restored relationship with Jesus. We are desperate and needy for the grace of God. And what I want us to understand it's because Grace has been given to you. Has a horrific terrible awful embarrassing your life has been over the last 10 15 20 30 40 years. That is not who you are. Grace isn't just deal with the Judgment aspect that guilt aspect going to deal with the same aspect a deal that the very things that they would see to call you. This is you this is your sin. And this is who you are and it reads us a both our guilt and our shame. We're not to be defined by that but were defined by what God and who God has called us to be a dancer. Paul says here. This is who you are. Now, he's feeling should lead us to the cross and reminded her desperate need for Jesus Lord of you controlled by the truth of what scripture says about us not by our feelings and this Grace unearned unmerited favor comes from God to us. What else happens in this defied. They're saying it says they are presented with guess now, I promised controversy in 1st Corinthians get started early and we two How do you have an NIV Bible NIV cool track with me and tell me when I don't say something that you're the Bible does say you can just yep. It Orion verse 6 even as a testimony about Christ was confirmed among you so that you are not lacking any gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, and I Vere's my missing a word. Yeah, I'm missing the word spiritual write your NIV says spiritual gift what's going on here now just a little background. The Bible wasn't written in English. English wasn't really even smoking then huh the Buckle originally written in Hebrew there in the Old Testament after the Babylonian captivity. You have it then translated the Old Testament into Greek. No Testament Greek tax. You also have an Old Testament Hebrew text the New Testament you have some words in Aramaic, but it's mostly written in Greek Greek because I'm not a linguist terribly hard under language for me even understand and put together and words kind of get jumbled around you just supposed to make sense of what's being said very normal for them not for us because this is a translation what some people have done for example on the NIV committee. What's not just one person but there are several people on that committee. They're trying to get at the heart of the text and I'm trying to get at the context of the text. So what you have before you this morning is a translation from Greek to English if you have a translation from English to English. If you have a translation from Greek to English were probably in a pretty good place now would I have this morning is an ESV Bible and the ESV Bible tends to be on the more literal side of thing, which also means when you're reading it. Sometimes you got how does that even linguistically makes sense and piecing things together the NIV take some more thought for Thought approach to scripture. And so was trying to do is get at the heart of the text now because of that you're going to have some things in your translation that aren't the same and this is one of the spots and this is also a hotspot because this word spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts has brought a lot of controversy to the church have in it. It's downright split churches broken them apart. Now, there's something I want you to know this morning in 1st Corinthians, you will not find anywhere those words place together spiritual gifts Paul. We use the word spiritual. He'll use the word gift Charisma. That's the word for gift. So why has the NIV actually done this or here in this portion of the text? They said look it says that he has given us all know since he's doing us all knowledge and we know in court they had this issue about speaking and glossy and languages and prophesying. So what they have done if they said obviously Paul is talking about these things specifically that we're going to save this for a grand talk only get to 1st Corinthians chapter 12 who only read first If he has one what I want you to do and what I want you to know is if you were in the camp of the gifts are for today, you can't use this as your proof text. You can't come here and say see spiritual gifts because it's not in the original language pocket be talking about numerous thing 3 gift of faith that was given to you. Now it's certainly doesn't discredit the reality of these gifts exist, but it's not a proof text. But I also want to share this with you guys because at our church, I kind of want to be biting their shirts and I want to be sure of what scripture says and I want to have a firm understanding on what's actually in here. So what is Paul saying he say you're not lacking any gift. That doesn't mean he's not talking about the spiritual gifts, but it certainly can't be used to say that's exactly what he's talking about. We have to not sorry okay with this right? You're going to have to wait. 9 months to hear the rest of the story

Yeah, you never come back to us. If you're pregnant. Now, you're lucky you're going to get to hear it. So this is what is going on in this house because you have been given gifts. It's broader than just a Pentecostal do you that many would hold but it certainly doesn't discredit that they couldn't be included in this and he saying I thank God that he gifted you with gifts redeemers. I mean, this is probably the heart of this morning and will close out here in just a little bit. We have guests. You who call this church home? You're a role to play in this church. You have things that I don't possess you have desires and dreams from Ministry. You have goals that you want to accomplish and I am not the only gifted person in our elders are not the only gifted people know how to deoxidize and syrup are not the only gifted people in our body only functions and only functions. Well as we come together and we pour into each other's lives and we allow for those gift whether they are natural talent and abilities.

Cousin as a follower of Jesus are used for him and enhanced in that way or that at the point of Salvation. God has given gifts to you to serve the body of Christ. Romans 12:3 Ephesians chapter 4 read 1st Corinthians 12 through 14. He has gifted up and let me tell you something there is stuff that God wants us to accomplish in Redmond. There are unsafe people who are hurting and broken through those that are far from God and we have everything we need to accomplish everything she wants but too many people off and just sit back and say we'll let the paid people do it or the visible people do it. But God is calling us to engage in to use the very gifting and talents that he has given us in order to see the gospel Goforth. very easy get involved. Engaged I can promise you if you just come one day a week two times a month. They're going to feel a little bit on the outskirts on the outside you feel like, present in the back. You don't want me serving. No, we want to bring you out front in a sense. We want to see you use those gifts how to get the gift of serving. Just simply one of those who did encourager. In all different ways in which this plays out you don't to be visible and upfront. Why do we sit on the sidelines and watch when God has called us into an epic drama to partake in the story of God. He's brought you into his story to accomplish for really the human purpose and a see others know him to live in relationship with him. It's important to be committed to your local church in as messy as it is. God created it. I'm sorry. He created the family structure. He also created the church family structure and we all know about those are a little messy, right but he created it because I want you to be involved in it because collectively you are the bride of Christ. You're not just a bunch of individuals running around doing whatever you want. You are an individual a part of my body and I want my body to function appropriately. Christianity not all about you and boxing up Jesus and just taking him to Starbucks to read the Bible listen to a podcast and go home.

Or family or part of the body of Christ and the work through like Corinth heart issues together. It's sin. We fail the practice forgiveness three years ago. I was having coffee with Al he has Brett the only way to actually practice forgiveness staff good enough relationship to hurt each other profound streamly profound and true and true if you like, I never offend anybody. I've never been offended. You probably don't have friends trying to be honest. I think I'm always apologizing.

The gifted what's holding you back from serving? You're part of the body what's holding you back from being involved? You don't know where to begin. I got lots of things and ideas. We can get people involved and the goal is to build up the community finally just to leave you on something next week cuz I thought process is what if I screw up. Read 1st Corinthians. They did not have it all together. They talked over each other. They hurt one another they had issues. They had problems yet. What does Paul say God is faithful to sustain you he will sustain you he will sustain you he will keep you he's already taken care of it you can rest in that you can be secure in that you can have hope in that you don't be looking over your shoulder and thinking man. I better go do 15 Hail Marys to recover whatever just went wrong and I got to make this up somehow. No, there is Grace and he is sustaining you so where does this leave us? If you look at all that bad parts of 1st Corinthians My Hope Is you look at your life and you go through some messiness, but you're convicted this morning. If there's some areas where you're going. My life is not where it ought to be that I hear that I'm a saint and that I'm Sanctified and forgiving and sustained that you can come before God and confess that and bring that to God here this morning that you have fellowship with God and John says in 1st John if you confess your sins, he is faithful to forgive those key sustains us. Let me rest in the beauty of what Jesus has done and that we seen and that we worship and that we engage in one another's lives. Today is a call. I've never loved the slogan but it's true. It's not just going to church. It's the wake-up call. We are at the church the ekklesia the called out ones. Make a minister and serve in one another's lives. It's simplistic to a degree. You can really shrink it down to what is God calling me to do today. How can I serve and love people on the story in the morning? I'll pray it out, but I was into my office this week and I was hanging out with Sean and we were talking and Some of my two favorite guys here. They just showed up. It just popped into my office Lewis and Leroy here and I've been Leroy for like 15 years. And what I loved about this moment is Leroy said you were running the weeds around that day. I think Louis is Rand you around. A scary, huh?

Here's what I love is simple. 3 serving each other but spending time with each other they came in here. We joked a little bit they didn't stay long. We talked we encouraged each other. It's simple we try to make it very complex and has to be this big thing to be ministering and serving. What if we just shrunk it down to what they look like in your relationships you have relationships in the church. You don't get involved in Community Bible Study a community group or something else to develop these relationships. We think it has to be this big Grand thing if I'm doing something for God. God brings it down to very local level and he saying love and care for each other. That's how they'll know. You're my disciples bring me so much. Joy that these two men Were Strangers years ago, and now they're rolling around with the top drop down right Louise Hay men brother. I'm waiting for a ride someday with the top drop down and they're having fellowship and pouring into each other. redeemers jump into this head deep with Brian father. Thank you for your word. And that we can dive in to relationship in Friendship because of what you have done you have restored us and giving us a right relationship with you through Jesus Christ. That's also the transfer over to these relationships that we have in this church to those outside of here.
