Day One

Giving to the Needy 1-4

Giving to the Needy
Using people to prove to God how good we are will get us nothing. If we are rewarded by men for our acts than that is all we will get.
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

The Lords Prayer 5-15

“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Same warning as giving to the needy.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), .
The Lords prayer is intended as an outline and can be used as a word for word prayer.

Fasting 16-18

Same Warning and instruction

Lay Up treasures in Heaven 19-24

Again the contrast of getting your reward from men seeing your actions verses your heavenly father. Same here don’t store treasure (reward)here on Earth but rather in Heaven.

Do Not Be Anxious 25-34

when you read this in context the progression here is clear dont focus on this temporary world.

What are some of the things you do that you hope other people will notice?

What are some of the biggest distractions that take your focus away from God?

Day Two

Judging Other 1-6

Judging others assumes a role that w don’t have. We aren’t the judge. EW can help each other though.

Ask and it will be Given 7-11

Our father wants us to come to him. Here asking God for help is a sign of intimacy. It doesn’t mean that God is our genie in bottle that will give us anything we want.

The Golden Rule 12-14

The more important part is the wide and narrow gates

A Tree and its Fruit 15-20

There is a direct connection between our beliefs and our actions.

I Never Knew You 21-23

Jesus knows the ones who do His Father’s will

Build Your House on the Rock 24-27

Hearing and doing, word and deed. One is dead without the other

The Authority of Jesus 28-29

Scribes were supposed to write down what others say and copy what others have written. Jesus is speaking the truth, not repeating it.

What are you reluctant to ask God for?

What teachings of Jesus in these passages do you struggle with?

Day Three

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

The leper doesn’t ask Jesus, he demonstrates that he believes he can heal him, Jesus heals him becasue of his faith.

The Faith of a Centurion

Again the Centurion has faith and also acknowledges Jesus’s authority

Jesus Heals Many

Among other things, Jesus demonstrates his ability to heal without touching simply by speaking. Not unlike how the world was created.

The Cost of Following Jesus

Following Jesus means leaving a lot of other things.

Jesus Calms a Storm

The Disciples’ sort of faith. They seek jesus when things get rough but they are surprised when calms the storm.

Jesus Heals Two Men with Demons

This is a strange story. You could easily highlight just this story. We have two men possessed by demons, terrorizing a community. Jesus casts them into pigs. The pigs run into the sea, and the people ask Jesus to leave!

What do you need to have in order for Christ to change your life?

What does it look like to follow Jesus?

Day Four

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

The authorities are getting angry at what Jesus is doing now. Jesus now reveals what is the reason for healing people, it isn’t to open a hospital. The faith that heals the man isn’t his.

Jesus Calls Matthew

Again there is a parallel from earlier section. Matthew is in just as much need as the paralytic, just spiritually not physically. Jesus again is explaining why or who he is here for.

A Question about Fasting

Jesus hints that he is going to be going away. Also describes what will happen when the new Kingdom comes. The old ways wont due with the new.

What similarities do you see between Matthew and the paralytic?

What do you think are the new and old things Jesus is really talking about?

Day Five Matthew 9:18-37

A Girl Restored Back to Life and a Woman Healed

Jesus doesn’t have to do anything particular to heal people, here there are two different interaction types. Again these miracles serve not just the individuals involved butt the proclamation of the gospel as the word goes out.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

Faith in Jesus is always required and new goes forward.

Jesus Heals a Man Unable to Speak

Jesus is accused of being the prince of darkness because of his work.

The Harvest is Plentiful, the Laborers Few

This verse isn’t exhaulting the laborers, like the Marines “the few, the proud, the marines”, its showing Christ’s sincere compassion for the people lost in the darkness of the world.

What is the first thing you think about when you read these healing accounts?

What do you think about the “harvest”?

Day Six

The Twelve Apostles

Jesus gives the apostles the same tools he’s been using to spread the kingdom.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

Here are the rules for the Apostles. Also key they are being sent out for the lost sheep of Israel. The Gentiles would be sent for later.

Persecution Will Come

Following Jesus means we will be treated like or worse than him. How was he treated? It is refrenced when they thought he was casting out demons becasue he was of Satan.

How does Jesus start to grow the church?

Based on 16-23, what can we expect when we follow Jesus?

Day Seven Matthew 10:24-42

Have No Fear

While the body might be killed, the soul can’t be harmed by those who would oppose the Lord. We belong to God nothing happens to us apart from Him.

Not Peace, but a Sword

Jesus isn’t bringing peace tot he Earth, he is bringing peace to God and His children. This first and foremost peace will set others against us.

Rewards

Accepting the Apostles receives Jesus and whoever receives Jesus receives God. Thats our reward.

Are you ready for the conflict that following Jesus brings?

DO you want the reward that God is offering?
